Well its getting near the time for me to part with my Jag for a slightly more sensible daily so I thought I'd better stick a sale thread up in anticipation
I bought the car back in June with 77,000 miles on the clock and it has been a reliable and delightful place to spend time. In my ownership I have done a couple of bits and bobs about the car to repair systems that weren’t working.
The full list of things I’ve done is as follows:
• Fitted a full set of the rare 16x8 Lattice alloys as fitted to V12 versions of the XJ40
• Repaired the broken front fog light
• Replaced the air con condenser along with mounting bushes and radiator mounting bushes
• Did an engine service, changed plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, oil, oil filter and air filter
• Fitted a CD multichanger
• Replaced the corroded boot badges
• Got the headlight washer system working
• New Replacement starter motor
I’ll do a quick run through of the various bits of the car
Interior
Being a Sovereign spec, you get a lovely cream leather interior which is in really good condition overall. The rear seat is immaculate and the only bit of worn leather that I can see is some wearing of the piping on the drivers side seat bolster but its not as bad as other leather seats of this age (pic below). There is a full set of Jaguar mats which are in decent condition and the wooden dash veneers are in reasonable condition also, there are a couple of cracks here and there but I don’t think they detract from the looks, rather they look in keeping with the age of the car.
As for equipment, the car is well specced. There is working Cruise Control and Air Conditioning which blows nice and cold thanks to the new condenser which I fitted. The front seats have electric adjustment which works perfectly and the Radio Cassette is supplemented by a boot mounted CD changer. The rear passenger electric window currently isn’t working but I will have a look at this this weekend.
Also of note is that the headlining is perfect in this car! It is known to sag on Jag’s but there are no such issues here at all
Performance
This has the punchy 4.0 AJ6 straight 6 engine which is smooth and quiet when you’re being sensible and amusingly fast when you’re feeling silly Oil pressure, volts and water temperature all good.
Its connected to a 4 speed auto box with selectable modes, normal for cruising about, sport mode for blasting down B roads and ‘no first mode’ for when it’s a bit slippery out there
Ok, the question that someone will no doubt ask. It will do 15-17mpg on short town journeys, low 20’s on combined and I’ve had it up to 28mpg with motorway driving with the cruise set at 65mph.
The engine pulls strongly and the box shifts smoothly as it should with a kickdown switch which works really effectively in sport mode. The starter has just been replaced as it was making a graunchy noise on startup but has now been replaced with a brand new motor so it starts strongly and quietly
Being a Sovereign, you get the softer suspension resulting in a very comfortable ride. However you can have a bit of fun down the B roads as the steering is quite direct and the car is surprisingly nimble considering its size and weight.
The brakes also are very impressive. The previous owner had just fitted new front dampers, along with new front discs and new pads all round. As I’ve not done that many miles since buying the car, these parts are still working very well showing no wear.
Theres a few receipts and stuff with the car but not a massive amount in the way of service history but from an inspection, you can tell it’s a car that’s been looked after over its lifetime so far
Exterior
The body work on the car is generally good, the paint and chrome work comes up very nicely after a clean and polish. There are a couple of small blemishes on the paint here and there which is to be expected for a car of this age and with so much paint to potentially get blemished!
The only real bits of rust that I can see are a couple of cosmetic bubbles on one front wing and at the top of the sill near this wing bubbling, I’ve taken pics of the worst areas.
The sills themselves and underneath the car is all very solid however. The arches are all perfect as well.
As mentioned above, the wheels are 16” Lattice wheels which are quite sought after and quite rare. The centres have been painted Gunmetal to match one of the pinstripes which goes along the length of the car. The tyres are Goodyears and a Michelin so good quality rubber
So overall, it’s a very presentable big old Jag which is good for a cruise about and a bit of fun for when you feel like it. Its been a thoroughly reliable and enjoyable car to own but I’m planning on getting something a little more efficient in order to divert some funds towards my MGB
Some pics are below and feel free to ask questions as theres probably something obvious that I’ve missed off
Also a link to my build thread which may have more details retrorides.proboards.com/thread/167446/1993-jaguar-sovereign-xmas-continued
EDIT: Just a note to add that that patch of cream liquid on the driveway in some of the photos is just where I spilled some metal polish as opposed to something leaking from the car
