My main project for the year has been the Metro. I'm sure alot of you have seen it now but i thought id make a post as i really should post a bit more on here! After moving to Birmingham a couple of years ago ive not really had the time or facilities to do the builds i used to but I'm trying to fix that. Money is being saved for a proper workshop and I'm looking for like minded people in the area as quite frankly Birmingham seems pretty barren when it comes to cool old cars! If there's anyone out there locally make yourself known and if anyone has a decent workshop going spare that would be nice too!! The car itself was bought out of necessity back in March when my daily hack finally bit the dust. I had just sold the BT van (which was probably a mistake!) so had a bit of cash spare. I looked on ebay and just up the road in Walsall there was this little bute. £1200 later and its mine. My first metro was a cracking little car and the favorite ive built so getting another was inevitable. To find such a mint example was exactly what i needed right then as i did have the space or time to be welding rust to rust all day.. I used the car as my daily for a few months but of course started to scheme on what id like to do with it. I decided early on that it would be road legal but not compromised for road use. I have 3 other road cars and they can be bought/sold, get crashed, stolen or scrapped easily. If i was going to put some serious time and money into something i didn't want too many compromises. I also had a 1450cc bottom end and K1200 head on the shelf in Suffolk so with a week or two off work the thing virtually fell together! By May the engine was in and after a few teething troubles i had it back in Brum for July. Its been round a few shows and general driving to get it run in but now is time for the next stage. In the new year it will be going back to Suffolk for more work in the hope of having it out again for the start of show season and hopefully in a fit state to do a little bit of proper driving. Theres still plenty of teething problems to solve! |

Thanks for posting, I loved this thing at RRG14 and Ultimate Stance.
Two things I didn't realise ...
1. It was from Walsall.
2. There's so much more to it than the cool little wheels.

That's a nice surprise under the bonnet, a Rover K-series would be a bit more logical.
I assume it is producing over 150bhp?
Did SC do the block and head modifications?
I'm building a 1293cc K100 myself and still puzzling to go for a dry deck method.

Yeh, its not really about how much power it makes, its about having an interesting car to build and run. Could have put a K in it but its bit boring for me. I think it will make about 130-140 peak but with a better curve than a 1380, will be on the rollers next year to be properly set up..
It was built with an SC kit but i did all the work. I would say its easier to go dry deck. Once you have shelled out 150quid for the head gasket you may as well have welded the holes up and use the proven BK450 gasket.

The head goes on really easy. Three of the studs line up as standard, redrill the rest, dry deck it and sort out an oil feed and drain. The cam drive and covers, exhaust, ecu all come in a kit now so easy peasy.

I remember reading in CCC magazine back in the nineties, about this conversion. First time since then I have I read or seen anything about it. Love it. Oh and welcome back. Your first metro was amazing and can see that this is going to be better.

Yes, on mine they are as its the simplest way. There are ways to redrill the block and head to mate them up but you need a custom gasket which cost a bomb. Theres just no point.

Greatd to see a Slater build thread, been such a long time, and back with a bang!
Excellent project and soooo cool that this engine has been built for a Metro City and not the obligatory Mini. Looking forward to seeing it progress.
