We've got a mercedes w210 E420 and if you don't use it as a daily anyway it's great!
the only things not to like on these are rusty wheelarches and fuel economy
where the 2nd is fixed by not driving it everyday the first is just something you have to live or deal with. (or fit LPG)

audi a6 c5 avant? pretty cheap these days and reliable as a passat (in fwd 4cyl form anyhow), had one a few years now and still liking it. Pros- chunky looks, comfy, reliable, relaxing drive, huge load space, 45mpg. Cons- slow (in unmodded 1.9tdi form), bit boring to drive, usual vag front wheel arch rust bubbles common.

Use to have a type 44 Audi 100 Avant Quattro with an oettinger engine conversion done - it was an animal - but 16mpg and a 90 mile daily commute sucked! Its on the list - 1.9 TDi PD engine preferred - i got 200 bhp out of my old Fabia one!

Had a UK Toyota Previa 2.4 petrol manual gearbox people carrier a few years back. Best family wagon I've ever owned. Even managed 30mpg on a run. Amazing beast!

Another vote for an Audi A6 Avant, but in the older C4 flavour. Preferably 2.5TDI with the I5 engine.
More spacious inside than the C5 and much better built. 2.5TDI comes in 115 and 140 bhp versions. The latter has a 6 speed box (optional on 115), is respectably brisk and capable of over 50mpg averages on the open road.
Only is finding one, especially one that's done under 200k. Mileage isn't a big worry provided there's some evidence of servicing. There are some out there with well over 300k on them. Mine's on 272k as still going strong.

(or fit LPG) Mine is the 320cdi. The electronics scare me to death, but can't argue with 197bhp, 350ft/lbs of torque and 30mpg without even trying! Also, the later ones are not quite so prone to rot.

A friend of mine has a Audi 200 Estate 2.2 turbo 4x4, in Burgandy, seems to have all the knobs and knockers, it needs a wing re-spraying and the interior/seats putting back in, he wants £1000 for it as it is, probably a 4-5k car when sorted.

Turbo volvo estate all day. I had an 850 and a V70 LPT, fast and comfy. Standard volvo electrical gremlins are always included though

+1 for the A6 C5. That's next on my list. Id love a 1.9 tdi quattro but they never made one. Not sure if the 1.9 engine would fit the 2.5 gearbox either

Found a Volvo 940 Turbo Auto Estate for £100 - going to look at it this weekend. Needs a new turbo and has been stored off road for 11 years....

Mine is the 320cdi. The electronics scare me to death, but can't argue with 197bhp, 350ft/lbs of torque and 30mpg without even trying! get a diagnosys system for it and it tells you what is broken, brilliant if you have the right tools.

It even carried 12 Imp transaxles in the boot once! That could only come from Retro Cars & be considered a normal occurrence!

I had the same criteria when my kids were little. I bought a Volvo 850 T5R, TWR spec, a rare and fantastic machine. Apart from an appetite for expensive tyres and aftermarket alarm related bother it was brilliant, I miss that old brick.
