So after having this for over 2 years it is time to start a thread about it..
After breaking an E430 W210 we hired a trailer to get rid of the shell and other metal containing rubbish that was laying around in my barn, all went well we loaded the carcas on the trailer brought it to the scrappy recieved cash and brought back the trailer.
We then had a little conversation with the trailer rental guy about what we had used it for and when he heard we brought a shell to the scrappy he wanted to know all about it, how to deal with the paperwork etc...
I should not have asked why do you want to know, but obviously i did and the answer was... well erm i've got this old merc i need rid of.
I could not resist to say, can you show it to me and off we went to a barn nearby.
In the corner was sitting a white merc, as i was no expert on these i thought it was a 108 at first glance but when i came closer it was a bit too small for that. Still it's a stacklight. It has aircon and a towbar so full option! has been imported from the USA in 1996 so there might be some solid steel in between the rust.
He named a price for it, but as i knew he wanted rid and he has a trailer business I asked him to deliver it to my barn and i offered him a lower price which he agreed.
so at nearly scrap money (400 euro, so 300 quid ish) I bought a 1968 W114 250 (2.5 straight 6)
on arrival it was off course worse than it was at first glance but worth the money!
The Original engine had been replaced by a M123 2.5 (2.5 from W123)but it had loads of stuff missing (starter, alternator, LPG injectors) so i decided to rip it out and sell it.. also it stood on wire wheels which again where sold.
At first the idea was to break my drift car and fit all the mechanical stuff into the W114, allthough this was a brilliant idea some research showed me that this would become one hell of a job (M104 engine is too wide, chassis legs must be moved, also steering wont clear the engine) and would make this a 10 year project, of which i allready own one (see link to derby thread below) so....
As i got 150 euro for the engine from a Unimog enthousiast and 250 for the wheels on ebay I was down to 0 for the car... I decided to spend some money on a M110 engine which appeared on a facebook page for 115 euro's including so electrical connectors and relays out of a W116. As i wanted more powaar this was now fixed. the M104 from the first plan has 225bhp, the M110 has 190bhp and the original engine 136bhp. Also i bought a BLOS (LPG carb) for a mere 120 euros... also i needed some welding gas 40 euros and some repair panels 50E, also the engine came without a proper loom so sourced one for 45 euros, this adds up to 370 ish euros... (aka 300 quid ish) not bad for a classic 280E to be!

Prices of parts have bottomed out recently as the tax scheme for everything between 25-40 years old was tax exempt but isnt anymore since jan 2014.
Petrol cars still have a low tax band option, but this means you can't drive them in winter time (as they are classics so apparently you should not drive them in winter)
But LPG and Diesel pay full tax until 40 years old since jan 2014, for some cars this means 1500 euro's a year, so loads of them are being scrapped or exported.
luckily the W114 is 46 years old, on LPG so all these stupid rules don't apply, and thus it's value has gone up loads, allthough it's still a wreck.
But... the car was still rusty
GOAL: get the car solid enough for MOT, drop in the M110, run it on LPG and drive it! This is not going to be a showcar it must be built on a budget.
starting point:
previous owner said the rear wheel arch had some repairs......
very usefull... especially as the rusty bits behind the patch hadn't been cleaned/removed
so I cut of loads of bits
and started welding (passenger floor first, rear wheel arch 2nd)
ouch my work isn't much better:
luckily i welded it all from the inside and it seems a lot worse than it is, looks a lot better from the inside:
seam sealed
painted
and then the rear arch behind the rusty bits
some rust but mainly solid, need to get some cavity wax in there after welding it shut
loads of filler around the arch
some more incisions in the rear fram rails
more old repairs
one new inner arch
much better:
some results of welding upside down (what a bloody nightmare that is...) good enough for me
and this is how it sits now:

the most complicated gas linkage i've ever seen on a factory setup.. runs accros the engine and then on the bulkhead back to the other side of the engine, probably just to clear the power steering.
Also some wheels were tried on (before weldathon pics)7,5x17 RH (bought for 75 euro's total now on 440 euro)
they rubbed slightly on the back but nothing a small spacer would't fix
hope you liked the read, I'll try to update this now and then
