With just a few hours sleep after a 12 hour night shift welding inside a nuclear submarine I set off to buy a car I'd never owned before, a Triumph Acclaim. RJC_3729 by srblythe, on Flickr I set off with the Mrs in the 305 estate on a 2 hour journey across Scotland in wintry conditions. The 305 drove perfectly for the whole journey. We got to the seller's house and got a look at the Triumph for the first time, he showed us all of the areas which he'd welded to a decent enough standard, he'd even cut out the rear quarter to access the inner wheel arch and strut top and welded the rear quarter back on without it looking totally curse word. He showed us some of the other modifications he'd done including some bright as curse word LED headlights and an LED lightbar butchered into the front grille. As if that wasn't bad enough it had some of the worst looking aftermarket alloys I'd seen in a while fitted to it. My heart sank a little when I saw the wheels. RJC_3731 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_3732 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_3734 by srblythe, on Flickr Not only did the wheels look curse word, it also had some bad steering wheel vibrations at 55 to 65mph which made the 2 hour return journey a bit rubbish. Fortunately the original wheels were included with the car so first thing I did when I got home was stick it up in the air for a look underneath and to fit the steel wheels. RJC_3735 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_3736 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_3737 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_3740 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_3742 by srblythe, on Flickr Much better. All of the welding underneath looks to be done to a decent standard, he'd come to the conclusion that it had a bent mot on it before he bought it but has actually fixed all of the rusty areas on the car. With the original wheels fitted the steering wheel vibration has gone. The car seems to drive quite well and should be a decent daily driver.

I like and defend three spokes and even I'm glad you put it back on the original wheels.

I was going to say, I bet Vulgalour has something to say about that! Not a bad looking car! How does one end up welding a sub? Do you need enclosed space training?

Surprised you hadn't had an Acclaim before! Shame about the Grille & sunroof... but at least it was loved. Glad the wheels were easier to rectify.

Respect to you for dedication to the cause. My first post on RR was on here and since then I've moved house twice, seems like an eternity. Top autoshiting, love the Triumph. My old man welded subs at Faslane. Used to creep me out that he came home with a dosimeter badge all the time.

Yeah, there's still hundreds of old cars out there to try out so I'm still doing what I've been doing. I saw your post in the welding thread, if you want to come to my unit on a Sunday I can show you a thing or two.

Ooh, a CD, there's posh! I had an HLS years ago that came with a similar MOT - Dexion used to reconnect the B pillar to the sill for example.
It was actually quite a peppy little thing, especially after Dad's mate (a BL mechanic) spent time tuning it up for me.

How does one end up welding a sub? It was cheap on Gumtree

When these came out one of the points made in the selling blurb was it was quicker than a 1.6 Capri, talk about scraping the barrel. Great little engine (Honda obvs)slick gearchange and working electrics were a bonus for BL product in the day. It was the only car we sold at the dealer I worked at you knew you would only see at service time.
My mum had a light metallic green HLS auto that was quite spritely.

I work in submarine dismantling, I needed a variety of different training such as working at heights, confined space etc. Working in the reactor compartment I'm exposed to ionised radiation as well as the general carcinogenic fumes related to typical welding activities. What happens is the submarine is docked in a dry dock, a large hole is cut in the side of the reactor compartment then low level waste/pipework is removed and the hole in the side is put back in position and welded in place. Before the submarines I worked on a variety of different projects including the aircraft carrier and sub sea platforms for wind farms but moved to submarine dismantling as the contract was for at least 15 years worth of work.

Except for all of us lot reading your progress, of course. Nicely done. I wish I could take credit for the welding but my friend is doing it and I'm providing the tools and equipment, he seemed happy to come and work every Sunday for free so I made a deal and let him have the 190E for £200.

RJC_4089 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_4095 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_4100 by srblythe, on Flickr So this is what I swapped the Acclaim with, another 305 estate making it my 4th estate and 7th 305 in total! It's a right curse word to start in the morning, tonight I changed the glow plugs which seemed to help a little bit but I think the other issue is air in the system. RJC_4103 by srblythe, on Flickr There doesn't appear to be a way to bleed the filter system so tomorrow I'm going to swap the filter from my other 305 which has a priming pump and bleed screw on the filter housing and hope that sorts it.

Spent some more time on the 305 today. Having tried to start it from cold this morning after the glow plug change I was disappointed to find it was still difficult to start. RJC_4109 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_4110 by srblythe, on Flickr RJC_4112 by srblythe, on Flickr I changed the fuel filter and lines from my other 305 then used the priming pump to bleed the air out of the system and now it starts instantly.
