Why not just give up and accept the fact that you'll never escape it's charms? Reward its faithfulness and willingness to return after being shunned, and stick some new wheels on it. I'm not sure if there is much wheel choice, I think it has an odd pcd that isn't fitted to anything else. I heard transit wheels might fit but I've never found one to try it.

Transit wheels don't fit, I tried them once, they're really close, but not close enough. I thought about using land rover discovery steelies, and having an extra set of holes drilled into them in the Tata pcd.

Rola looks good with the clear lights. And I like that choice of rims! Do me a favour and paint the lips of the stars black, though? I can't wait to be driving in the snow. 5 days to go! Pity we'll be in a brand new Forester/Peoplemover thing and not an old barge.

don't you normally chop the rusty bits off before you start welding bits back on? Good to see its getting some love. I see your list of cars is reasonably short at the moment. You're losing your game!

I've been patching up the Tata piece by piece, the welding looks curse word horrendous, I started of with 1.2mm thick flux cored wire then managed to acquire 1.2mm solid mig wire and finally managed to find a reel of 0.8mm wire. The Tata NotmuchBeta by srblythe, on Flickr No close ups because I am ashamed of my shoddy welding... I took the Alto out for a spin on Saturday 1983 Suzuki Alto FX by srblythe, on Flickr It's still running sweet, no mechanical issues to report but there's some lacquer peel in places and some scuffs and scrapes appearing with light rust marks. I gave these 360 glt alloys a quick clean up and paint with the aim of getting some tyres on them and fitted to the 440. DSC_0972 by srblythe, on Flickr The Ex Wilsonx2 309 didn't stay with me for long... Snow in April by srblythe, on Flickr I traded it with Derskine for the Renault 18 gtd, the deal was I got to keep the interior to fit to the phase one 309 and I got the good driveshafts but Derskine decided it would be easier/quicker to order a pair and fit them to my car than removing them from his, fitting to mine then having to source another pair for his 309... Third time lucky! by srblythe, on Flickr I'm thinking about going back to the original colour with the 18. In other news I took the 305 SR in for a test at my local place. What's been happening lately? Panhard65 kindly sent me some rockers to try on the 18, upon opening the package they looked different to the ones on the car, I think they were slightly more beefed up as they had come from a Turbo diesel. I fitted it anyway and got a new belt from Derskine. DSC_0432 by srblythe, on Flickr I had some slight issues with timing it correctly, I put the belt on with guesswork, I found the cam and pump marks easily enough but couldn't figure out which marks on the crank pulley were the correct ones to line up the new belt with. I found out there's a way to determine tdc on the crank by removing a bolt on the casing and poking something in it until it stops turning. I tried this method along with lining up the other timing mark but when trying to turn over by hand it stopped turning. For some reason I figured it was 180 degrees out but after unbolting the rockers and turning the cam it still wouldn't turn over by hand. I decided to remove the bottom pulley and noticed the timing marks were there so I lined all of the lines marked on the belt up and tried turning it over by hand. It turned freely but after one revolution of the belt none of the marks lined up so I turned it over a few more times and the marks were at a different point each time. I thought "curse word it" and connected a battery to see what would happen when trying to start it. I spent a bit more time on the 18, I got a new v-belt from my local motor factors, it didn't fit so I took it back and got a longer one which was a better fit. To fit the belt the alternator needed unbolted but when unbolted there's not a whole lot of movement available so getting a belt to fit was always going to be a fluke. After fitting the belt, I fitted the radiator and bled the cooling system. The rear drums were seized so I removed the rear wheel to hit the drum with a hammer and it freed off, I took the wheel inside to put air in the tyre but the valve was letting air back out. I broke the bead only to find an inner tube inside so grabbed some Renault Espace wheels and fitted some tyres I had lying around... DSC_0457 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_0459-1 by srblythe, on Flickr
