Isuzu 1.7 goes with a Carlton or Omega gearbox, both being GM and all.
Wasn’t someone on here virtually giving a Ford 1.8TD and type 9 recently? That might be reflective of it’s worth though...

What about a V6 Tdi/hdi from a ford/jag/pug? Shorter than a 4cyl, with more oomph 😀

Plenty of options but I don’t want it a big project right now as I’m still building the Ital van
There are so many things I want to change it really needs to come off the road for a year so as much as I don’t want to refit things that I’m not happy with the sensible option is to fix it and keep it the way it is while I plan a rebuild and collect the parts
There is definitely an engine swap in its future though
That’s all very sensible and boring isn’t it

Sounds like the best plan is to throw it back together, minimal effort/expense style, and keep it running while you get the van drivable. Once that’s done, you can look at your options for the Model A. Gives you plenty of time to do your research as to viable engine/gearbox options, and time to pick stuff up cheap rather than having to pay through the nose because you need it right now.
Have you determined what the fault is yet?

Have you determined what the fault is yet? Because it’s a mixture for parts that aren’t designed to fit together, 200tdi bellhousing, LDV input shaft, 300tdi release bearing (I think) and the sleeve the bearing fits over isn’t quite long enough so it partly came off and jammed up I can buy an extra short bellhousing and input shaft to match the sleeve but that’s £300, in my pile of bits I’ve found another sleeve the correct diameter so I’m going to weld an extra piece on the end to lengthen it. Sounds a bit dodgy and if it was thin I’d have my doubts about it but the sleeve is about 4mm think so I can crank the amps up and get a nice strong bead in it

Not sure if it's of any help but I've got an LT77 and longer bellhousing from a 200tdi Discovery in Hythe that you'd be welcome to.

If you use the LT77 from a defender, it will be the same length as the short R380 box. An LT77S will be of similar strength as well. You will need the bell housing on the engine off a 200 TDI or TD though. Also, the suggestion of using the series 3 clutch fork I have done in the past, however, the geometry is not quite right, and the pushrod will sit at an acute angle in the slave cylinder, and will eat cylinders at an alarming rate. So now I went back to the pressed fork with a welded reinforcement.
