I'm looking at building a track car with a buddy. Seeing as I have a 1400cc twin cam K series from my old 214 I'm thinking of buying a rover metro, possibly a 114 with a single cam and dropping the twin cam lump in. Anybody done this conversion? What do I need from the donor car? Theres always plenty of dead rover 100s to choose from, most with engine failure. Finding a good body donor might be hard though! The whole venture shouldnt be that expensive either, so its other half friendly!
I'm aiming along the lines of a non road legal 100 with the interior totally stripped out to reduce weight and the 16v engine. Should have a good power to weight ratio.
Opinions?

Does the 114GSi(or another high-end 114) not come with the twin-cam lump already? Apparently lumping a different K-series into Metros and 100s is easy, even chucking in the VVC is simple because MGFs are Metro-based.

NAh all the rover 100's came with SOHC's I believe. Get over to www.metro-power.net and you'll definitely get your answer there.

This isn't an answer to your question but you may want to consider that your track day car may be a great car to enter into a racing series, and if you are considering this, you'll need to be building your car within a set of rules. For instance the pre-1993 series in the Classic Touring Car club is for cars that use their original engines.

Could be wrong tho, haven't seen one lately! Retro Cars also featured a Rover Metro with a tuned 1800 with diferent cams, Emerald ECU, other bits and about 180 brake! Now thats entertainment ;D

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

Doing a racing series would kick ass, but isnt it for people with loads of money? Even if any racing was on the cards I think a track day project would be the order of the day for the moment as Ive never been on a race track before (except ovals)
Should be very educational!

Have a look on www.metropower.co.uk there are plenty of people that have done the conversion before. I also have some parts you might like for a track day car, poly bushed wishbone, drop links and ARBs (front and rear) I don't think your R100 comes with a rear ARB as standard. Just bedded in EBC grooved and dimpled discs and yellow stuff comp pads. lmrdave@hotmail.com

you don't need to spend mega bucks on them rover 1800 twinks either, get a 2nd hand emerald m3d ecu, single box decatted exhaust (you could make it as its basicly straight, you could make it straight anyhow! a decent cone filter fase powerboost valve & a decent rolling road session (worth the money £40) & thats how i got 142hp
brace the rear subframe with a piece of 1" box section! fit front shocks! & anti rollbars from a 2nd hand gti & strip the interiour bare! just a seat, dash & 4 point harness, if you brace the rear wheel arches with a piece of box section it helps stiffen the rear of the metty body (they do flex across the rearquite a bit!)
i have some performance parts/spares from my k-plate rover metro i'd sell them for very little if you can collect as i need the space! i have bumpers, grp wings, may have arbs i'll have to have a look, light clusters plenty, i'd sell the lot for cheap as chips the grp wings are the only things i'd want what i paid for them! PM me if you need anything

Ill be seeing my "track day mate" on Monday and wel discuss the next step. Weve been on about building a track car for ages but never decided on which car to use. A rover 100/metro has got to be the one of the cheapest ways into a quick track car.
I may take you up on the parts. See how things pan out.
That rear ended GTA is still in use so not for the knackers yard just yet.
