Firstly, can I just say that I don't have a pile of cash waiting so if you are selling anything please don't get your hopes up with this thread... (hence it is here and not in the wanted section). I am however, hoping that in the not too distant future I will be in the market for a car again; and, as the thread title suggests, there are some criteria that need to be met. I've been spitballing some ideas and have a couple of options but I thought I'd throw it out to the RR collective to see if there was anything I've not thought of.
So what am I looking for? First and foremost it is going to be a main family car so it will need to seat 2 adults and 2 (sometimes 3) children. 4 doors is pretty much a must and it needs the capacity to fit a bugaboo pram (not the smallest of fold-downs in the world) and a load of shopping in the boot so estates are probably preferable.
But it also needs to be something that I enjoy looking at and being in (and can spanner and modify, play-about-with, ruin at the weekend). Budget is to be confirmed but to start I'm looking at sub £2k.
To give you an idea, top of the list so far is an E28 BMW (yep, not an estate, but should be big enough), but I've also been looking at 70's/80's Japanese saloons/estates (always fancied a Datsun 120 estate) and everything in between.
So, what do you all reckon?

Sierra of some sort? My saphs been a very practical daily, room in the back to sit 3 adults in relative comfort, massive boot, easy to work on, bits are cheap, can still get a lot of stuff direct from ford and they do hatch, saloon or estate models

I had the same issue a few months ago. On top of your criteria I had to add a 9st dog into the mix though. So estates were a MUST.
I would say E34, passat b3 or Saab 9-5. Having owned/own all of them, any one would fit your needs beautifully. E34-most fun (my favourite). 9-5-biggest, most comfortable, safe (wife drives it now in lue of her golf GTI). Passat b3-most economic cheap to repair/mod.
I did also consider an E30 touring, but once you start loading it up it gets pretty cramped pretty quickly.
(Ok, so the Saab is neither retro or interesting - but it is good)

Another Volvo vote, but older than an 850... depending on your tastes, a 140, 240, 740, 940 or 960 will fit all of your needs. All have discs all round, robust for family protection, plenty large enough for anything you throw at/in it. Also very tuneable yet basic enough for easy maintenance. oh, and they're all RWD

Good suggestions guys...
A B3 Passat would certainly tick many boxes. But I have owned one before (a VR6 imported from Hong Kong). That said, an earlier B2 on coilovers and banded steels would be awesome - just very hard to get hold of!
Lot of Volvo love, which I'm warming to. Especially either a fully spec'd 850 T5 or a 240 such as:
Ha! Although a 2JZ engine conversion may by out of my price range and a bit excessive for the wife to use on the school run!

Hmmm, from the 60's/70's I'd suggest a Triumph 2000. Big (not massive) comfy and a boot big enough from a pram. From the 80's I'd go Mercedes 190E. They're starting to climb in price, but very nice ones can still be had for £1500 upwards. If you want bigger (or and estate) then the W124 will cater for all your needs, but watch out for rot

Mine was £700 with huge service history, nothing needed doing and in 6 months and 10k it's needed a water pump, that's it. Boot is big but the opening isn't which may be an issue, and they are wibblepoo on fuel even for what they are, I get 22mpg round town and 35mpg on a run with 109bhp. Even as a 190 owner, my vote would go for a S124 300TE or 300TD, a Volvo 240 or 740, or an Audi 100 Avant.

I've just replaced my modern Octavia with a 1990 300TE and I couldn't be happier with it. Seems the perfect retro family wagon for my wife, toddler, baby and baby related paraphenalia (travel system etc.)!
Have also had a mk3 Passat in the past and can recommend those too. Very spacious, comfortable and surprisingly economical (2.0 8v petrol).
Also on my list were E36/E46 3 series estates, and Volvo 740/850/940

I'd say it would be a push at getting one (let alone a good one) for 2k but I'll suggest it anyway. Triumph 2000 estate.
