Hi All,
Been inspired by the builds on here for a long time and would like to share some stories of rust!
I've had this car for a long time - almost my first car. I ran it for years on a shoestring and when I went to live abroad it went into storage. Well, a couple of years ago finally moved into a house with a garage and I decided to bring the SAAB home and get welding.

I won't bore you with too many pictures of rust but we went from this:

to this

And from this:

to this
[/p]
And this:

through this
[/p]
to this
[/p]
That's probably enough of those for now...
Got the car to a stage where I was happy with the underneath:

The car is now back on the road with an MOT looking like new underneath but a little ratty on top!
I'll post some more pics later.
Cheers and I hope you like it!

I will confess to having had a big dislike for these many years ago as I perceived them to be a bit farty and "uncool." Its fair to say that my youth coloured my judgement because, as an old geezer now, I KNOW that these are seriously cool, massively underrated and superb cars and that, one day, I will have one my driveway. Love the standard of fabrication and welding on this one, I look forward to more pics and more of the complete story. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comments guys - they are definitely an acquired taste!
Here's a couple of pics from just before the MOT:

Those that know about these cars will spot a couple of modifications. The grille assembly is US spec, normally these cars have rectangular headlights. The wheels are known as RAC rims and are narrow and offset. The car is also lowered a couple of inches although may need to come down a bit more at the back - no fuel or spare wheel in the photos above.
Since passing the MOT I have fitted this:
[/p]
A Jetex 2" exhaust and a Nikki Carb,

The Nikki carb was a popular mod on these in the 70s. I do have a Weber 32/36 DCD and the correct and hard to get hold of manifold and vacuum plate but the carb has wear in the spindles so I need to send off for refurbishment.
Here's a photo out on the road:

Hey,
Baggabones - cheers!
Fordmartin - it would be cool to see a pic of your Grandfathers car.
I thought you Retroriders might like to see a couple of pics of what I was running around in before I brought the 72 car home:
Unfortunately I had to sell this one to make room in the garage for the work on the green one. I have quite a few cars over the years that would fit in on here and quite a few I wish I had never sold - you can't keep them all though I guess!

The quirky looks of these cars just make them look so darn'right' due to the fact that from some angles they can look so wrong!!!
I would love to get my hands on one of these one day as they seem to be solidly built and designed by people with a real eye for detail.
Your motor looks awesome and the level of work that has gone into it is spot-on.

Fantastic. I've been toying with the idea of a cool Swede, something older than my now departed Volvo 850R, I'd love either an Amazon or a 96, the 96 has fantastic styling but I'm curious what the engine is like to live with (I hate spannering) ?

Hi,
saabsled - I've seen yours on here in the past - nice!
grifterkid - cheers and yes, they are nice and solid!
tdk - I love Amazons too although never had any experience of one. Earlier SAAB 96s had a two stroke, I have never owned one of these but the later cars (pretty much post 1967) had the Ford Cologne V4 as in the German Taunus among other things. It's as reliable and simple to work on as any other Ford of this era. The gearbox is a transaxle and can be a bit of a weak point - I've been thinking about fitting a gearbox from something else but that's a job for another day (or year!)
Cheers

COOL, COOL, COOL!! So nice to see another 96 owner on here. I recognise your previous 96. Think I saw it on UKSAABS at some point. I love the earlier cheesegrater grill and round headlamps and the US grill would be my next favourite. Bet you noticed a difference once you'd fitted the Jetex and carb, supposed to improve the breathing no end. Gotta agree on rear ride height, could definitely do with going a tad lower.
TDK - As Dirtbiker said, engines are pretty reliable really. They've got a fibre timing gear which can/does wear and balance shaft bearings that wear. If you don't tighten the fan belt any more than just enough that it doesn't squeal, that helps extend the bearing life. Gearboxes are a definite weakness, but if you don't abuse them or tune the engine excessively, then they just keep going. They are definitely one of the better column change boxes to use and as long as the uj's haven't got much/any wear in, then they're very precise.
Anyway, keep up the good work.
Will ;-)

The gearbox is a transaxle and can be a bit of a weak point - I've been thinking about fitting a gearbox from something else but that's a job for another day (or year!) Cheers Audi transaxle? They would be a lot easier to get a hold of and I'm imagining a heck of a lot stronger.

madwelshman - Glad you like it. Definitely goes better with the carb and exhaust though these are only temporary as I have big plans for the engine in this one... Hi Melle - Good to hear from you, van thread on here...? qwerty - I have had the very same thoughts about an Audi box, if anyone has one they could measure that would be much appreciated... I have also thought a air cooled VW box would do it or ideally the five speed the VW guys use (from a 914?) Or even a Subaru box which can easily be made to suit a front wheel drive car. Anyway, been enjoying driving the SAAB when I can but work on it has taken a back seat for a while as been distracted by this: Laters

Good idea, but not before I've had the chance to actually do something on that car... Looking forward to hearing more about your engine plans for the green one!
