After the thread with the let/xe powered sierra, alistark said that 302 (5.0 V8) would be his choice. Well I have been thinking about my sierra and the lack luster power of the inj pinto, and come to the conclusion that a 302 would be a good idea too! 302 are cheap to buy and rebuild. Make an awesome sound and make over 200 bhp as standard......... sounds good to me I know that this is a pipe dream, but how hard would it be to achieve? Bearing in mind that the south africans had the XR8 (a ready made 302 sierra). Are engine mount available for this conversion? Can you get a bellhouse to mate the engine to a type-9 (weak) or mt75 (stronger) (T5 boxes seem a bit expensive)? What clutch? What is the difference between winsor or cleveland? and which is best? Anything else? Some pics of XR8 to excite you

Could you not order the engine mounts from south africa? What gearbox does the XR8 use?

Easiest way would be to buy a cut out engine & box from a 79-93 Mustang EFi manual. You then get the engine and T5 gearbox. Bolt the T5 to the stock gearbox mount, then make some engine mounts wherever they hit the chassis from the V8.

Not a bad plan!
American Engines used to sell cutout lumps, for like 500 quid all in.

as mentioned the mounts are off the shelf from ford SA don't bolt one to a type 9 or mt75 or you'll be picking up bits from yopur drive way the first time you go to pull away ;D cut out from a late model mustang with a manual box can be picked up for around £800 could be in and done for around £1200 and thats a late 5.0HO efi setup

I'm sure a kit used to be available, if I remember rightly they did them for both the 302 and Rover V8s. Can't for the life of me remember the company but jonnysierra might. He got as far as buying a 302 and C4 for his old blue Sapphire before having to give up and spend the money on more mundane things

magnum engineering do the kit for the rover but the off the shelf stuff from fords would be the best way to go for the 302 although there are kits available from a a few places

You don't fancy going the Cosworth twin cam route which will also gove you over 200 horses with a turbo? A Ford 302 engine was a good choice in 1969 America but nowadays it's heavy, uneconomical and a bit of an old dog.
Just a thought.

Charlie 5.0HO will actually give around 30mpg, it weighs alot less than you would think as the later engines have alloy heads water pump and intake, it a sight more reliable than a cosworth , alot cheaper to tune than a cosworth and you can allway fit a turbo or to to the ford v8 as well . and before you compair the sound erm lets see V8 burble or chav style drone

Actually, as far as I can remember, Ford never used alloy heads on a production 5.0. They were always all-iron. But they are very compact and very light, much torquier, and less stressed than the Cosworth. And of course there are thousands of hop up parts available for them which will just widen the gap between it and the cosworth.

I'm gonna play devils advocate here Why the ford 302? Heavier then a rover v8 and more expensive and trickier to come by inthis country. About the same power from standard non injected units and the rover can be hotted up just as easily as the ford 302. Companies here (magnum) will sell you the bits to bolt it straight in.

Plus a decent YB lump is expensive to run, rebuild and a stage 3 yb with a T34 will drink fuel at an alarming rate too . The V8 engine should make the car nice and responsive as well as easy to drive.

Sounds awesome!! Especially in something pretty none special looking. I think a Late spec "GT" hatch or similar with the 302 in it would rock!!

yes id say use a injected 5.0 engine.. the cleveland is quite a bit bigger/heavyer and needs to rev to get the best from it,,, the 302/5.0 engine is quite small really smaller than a rover v8.. do it.. a great swap id say.. si

Yes id agree the 5.0 302 is probably smaller than a rover (just) but the rover is actually lighter.

nothin like a V8 burble, but if you want an easy conversion the granny cossie 24v, will give 200bhp standard and drop straight into a sierra, fit the injectors from a 2.5 V6 vectra and you'll get 38mpg at 60mph and a 145mph top speed.
you can buy a complete running car for about 300 quid, nick the rear beam which will go straight onto the sierra and has a LSD, you can even fit the complete front suspension if you swop the sierra TCA's onto it, and have the big vented discs front and rear. probably sell the leather and stereo and fuel computer on ebay for about £150 so very cheap and easy conversion.
Only slightly akward part is getting a manula box, type 9 isnt really strong enough, but you can import a rwd MT75 from germany or get a hybrid one built up for about 300 quid.
can be brought up to about 240bhp fairly easy with later frog eye scorpio cossie cams (don't use the whole engine, the wiring is a nightmare and the cam chains are weaker) a cone filter and a chip.
twin turbo versions are running 500bhp, but cost big money.

Just have to point out the cossie v6 is the old cologne v6 with better heads, is really heavy and wont rev very well. get the 302 ftw!
