Small update: The engine is apart and I finally know what I'm working with and more importantly where to go from here. Most components look reusable, the cam will have to be changed, I'm going for bigger exhaust valves (think mine were 35mm and we're going to push it to 37mm) and then some porting. Bottom end looked in good shape, no signs of overheating, crank is fine, rods look new. The block and the pistons have been getting a bit too close for comfort, not sure why, either the machining wasn't correct, the pistons are cheap and have expanded or some other reason but there is definitely signs on wear. I'm pretty sure I can get away with it though, light hone, new rings and run it how it is. Looking for input and opinions on this, it may seem like a false economy but finding an L18 block in the UK will be next to impossible.

Small update if anyone is still reading.
The current block and pistons will be turned into garage art/furniture and a new one is being sourced. New forged pistons, pins, rings etc will be purchased once the replacement block is found and bored out.
Piston rings on 2 and 3 were melted into the pistons. Looks like it got very hot and/or detonated or was poorly put together in the first place or a combination of everything. I now know why the car was parked up.
Onwards and upwards, shame I'm not using the original block, but it'll be much better than before and the builder can build exactly what I want.

I got forged pistons made by JE for around £100 each a few years back - surely you could bore the existing block and re-use or if it's too bad to bore - sleeve it??

The existing block is bored out to 89mm which is the absolute maximum, most people have said not to go over 88.5 as you're dangerously close to the water ways. Bore and sleeve would be an option, but it'll be more expensive than finding a replacement.
JE were recommended to me, I think that's the builders preferred supplier.

I take it you have tried Datman for an L18 block? Yeah I spoke to Will the day after he sold his L18 He sold it to a guy local to me who also have a 510 race car so I know it's going to good use. I'm sorted now though anyway, got one being delivered next week.

I'm excited just reading through this thread and seeing your project all come together. To have such a great looking car with that history is awesome.

Also gone me a bit inspired to crack back on with the wagon, took the tarp off it first time in about a year soon as I got back.

Shame you got to use a different block,but nevermind. itll be great with a fresh motor. Ive been running in the celica today. I'm glad the bonnet opens from the front,otherwise id be huntiing a screen now :-0

What happened to yours then, just forget to latch it down?

I managed to get a couple hours in today, the plan was to remove the battery tray and start to prep the engine bay for the new engine. Getting the car back on the ground took a little longer than expected, but eventually I got it outside. Attacked it with a pressure washer, most of the black paint came off revealing the lovely, original off white colour. One day when I get all the body work sorted it'll return to that colour. I got to use my favourite toys, angle grinder, drill and a hammer And then quickly threw some zink primer down Gave it a wash and pushed it back away Paint needs taking back, holes need welding up and the whole thing covering in POR15 and then painting but that'll have to wait until it gets warmer
