I've got a hire car at the moment whilst my Audi is undergoing an insurance inspection. They've given my a Merc C Class, the boot opens fully from a button and it's something that I'd like to replicate on my car when I get it back. Would it be easy to do? Do you think I could just attach a spring somewhere or is it far more complicated? Like this Thankssss

What are you trying to replicate? Does your Audi already unlock with a key fob remote and you just want the boot to open with it or do you want your key opening boot to unlock and pop open with a key fob remote?

I have a strong gas strut on the boot of my Nova, I rigged a solenoid to pop the boot on the alarm fob and so it opens at the push of a button.
You still have to close it normally though!

I know how to get the boot to unlock from the fob, I'm trying to make it physically open up by itself.

A mates Lexus IS200 has a sort of torsion beam spring thing to open the boot automatically once its popped, had to change it though cos it had lost its springiness

The same as what Johnny A said - my smart roadster had the same - it's just a latch on a remote solenoid with a hydraulic strut (must be a certain kind but don't know name - pressurised so that when the latch moves it auto-stretches)

Some KIA Sedona and Chrysler voyager have power tailgates, push button on remote and it opens or closes, perhaps they could be a parts source. If you just want opening how about some strong rams ? Perhaps these people can help www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-strutsTtfn Glenn

Just get a bonnet strut fitted so once the alarm latches it open the strut lifts it automatically

Autoloc sell a power boot/bonnet opener, would have to ship it from the US but it's worth it as their products are good.

I used to have a couple of tailgate struts (of unknown origin) on the boot and a solenoid to operate the lock but the rear of the boot didn't sit properly with the force of the strut acting on it so had a look through Ebay for some boot hinges with integrated struts. Found some from a Volvo S40 and with a bit of adaption bot them to fit..... retrorides.proboards.com/thread/46953/1985-opel-manta-winter-jobs?page=11

if you want it to open and close get some convertible hood rams and the control units and adapt them, I'm sure mk4 astra convertibles had a remote operated hood so maybe find some one braking one of these and get the hood ecu, wiring rams ect and have a play.

I spend all day developing this sort of thing at work so have spent alot of time on this recently! Basically if you want to do it with gas struts you need to increase the strut force and potentially change the ball stud geometry as many systems go over center just before closing to allow you to drop the boot lid closed and not have to push it all the way down. If you do it will make the boot a bit harder to close (not over the top though) and you will have to push it all the way closed. It will also be affected by temperature as the gas strut force is reduced in low temps (and increased in high temps) but if you got it working at ambient it would probably be ok 90% of the time. Another method would be to introduce a secondary spring to pop the bootlid past the over center position afterwhich it will then self open.
The alternative is to fit some sort of electric linear actuation strut but this might be quite a costly option and the control system might get quite complicated!

Failrly sure there is a thread on one of the big vw forums about this.
They found that certain cars has a soribg loaded stop rubber on them. By fitting these when the boot was closed they compressed, open the boot and they have the struts just enough of a healing hand to soribg the boot right open

The only problem I have with them is that in the upright position the edge of the boot lid is forward of the bodywork so if it's been raining any water runs off it into the boot. On my 200SX I've used hinges from an MGF - they've got an integrated spring...... www.mgfcar.de/boot_lid/hinge_cp_2683.jpgAfter a lot of trial and error I ended up just using the spring part on the original hinges img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/mantachris/SP_A0152.jpgDon't know how heavy your boot lid is, these are only just strong enough to prevent the boot dropping

I have always lusted (similar to upmarket vehicles e.g. S Class) after not only an opening, but also a CLOSING option. In stead of complicated hydraulic and/or vacuum systems, what about something simpler. Opening is straight forward - solenoid with simple spring arrangement to lift when activated - hinge integrated as suggested. Closing: Perhaps an electrical motor (maybe door glass lifter ex junk yard - guess it must be heavy duty) connected to one or both of the hinges (linked), either by an arm application or gear driven. Cut off switch integrated/add on to closing latch. My electronic knowledge not sufficient to link this to a remote. Still considering whether there is a benefit in duplicating the function(s) to dash switches.
