I've been meaning to join this forum for a while, but I've spent the last couple of evenings reading through this whole thread and I felt the need to join up just to say how much I've enjoyed reading it, and keep up the good work!
Earlier this year I bought a project Maserati of my own, a 222 4V. It doesn't run just yet and there's lots to do so this thread has given me some inspiration, so thanks for that! I'll be getting properly stuck into it soon, when my 164 Q4 is back on the road. I'll keep an eye on this thread, well done for sticking with it through the trickier times.

varelse > Hey that's a good idea! I have neither glass nor sand paper at the moment, I'll think about how I could get this to work. And if it needs a proper skim, I guess I'll just keep going until it's flat because it won't get one... yoeddynz > Oh my that's quite a disappointment. And you can't even say your learned anything! Although it makes me wonder, how could a bearing like this just slip out of the crankshaft?! As for the manifolds, I didn't know about that silicone high-temp gasket thingy and had to google it. It will be put EVERYWHERE. Also, because I want things to look flash, I'll get them sanded by a colleague at work and give them a coat of VHT paint. haydnw > Oh my. I guess you are aware just how rare and special the 222 4V is? For those not familiar with the huge Biturbo range of cars, it all started with a puny 2-liter 18-valve SOHC carburetted engine with 180hp and ended on the 222 4V with 2800cc, 24-valve DOHC and 285hp! Only 130 were made, they're the daddy of them all. Of course there are also the Shamal and Ghibli but they are more distant, as well as heavier. Please start a thread on it! Oh and the 164s too, lovely cars these. So I went to the garage some more, and made some progress. You can clearly tell where the leak was! The other side had one leaky pipe as well which could only lead to ... RAWR RAWR RAWR BRAAAAP BRAAAAP soo-too-toooooooooo BRAAAAAAAAAP Back to less stupid things, I've made a clutch-centering tool yesterday after work, it seems to work but I can't know for sure until I actually use it. I needed a 15mm diameter and then 22, all I could find was 16 and 21. I used a flap disk to reduce the outer diameter of the 16mm pipe, it's at 14.5 or thereabouts now, and apparently the 21mm pipe is snug enough in the splines of the friction plate so it should be ok. I also made a spigot bearing removal tool but it didn't work, I used the same 16mm pipe but it wasn't strong enough. Version 2.0 using 14mm rod should be knocked together early next week, I'll build it as a slide hammer so it's easier to use. I'm done cleaning the engine, it took another 3 hours yesterday I've made a start on the gearbox, the crud is harder to get off but it will be done. After that I'll make a start on the engine bay, after which I'm somewhat stumped. I need to get the turbos off the manifolds but the nuts wouldn't budge. I doused them in WD40 yesterday, I can't really get at them with the ring end of the spanner, and the open end just mangles them. Either I'll find some specific spanners, or I'll buy cheap stuff that I'll modify to fit. Apart from that and the spigot bearing, I have to take the rear crank seal out as well: usual destruction methods will be used. I'm still waiting for parts so I might just start to put the front end back together. It has to be done anyways. And I sooo want to see the new bumper on

I always use heat on manifold studs. If you can get hold of plus gas try that, it makes wd40 look like water.

I'm sure as long as you can find a large enough sheet of sand paper, taking that and some WD40 and heading to your 'local' IKEA to test the tables will work well enough.

You know you're well and truly involved in a project when you start making your own tools! The engine looks great now, do you mind me asking what you used to clean it? As mine is absolutely caked in many years of crud and road grime.
I did my research before buying mine so I was aware of the 4V but didn't pay it much attention as I figured it would be waaaay out of my price range. I was looking at various later EFI cars when I saw the 4V for sale as a non-runner (thus, cheap). I couldn't believe it, so I boosted the budget. It's a rhd car too, which makes it one of 13 built! I can't wait to get properly stuck in, as you are.
It's a shame Shamals have shot up in price, I love the much wider and meaner look of those.

I've bought a 13mm combined spanner that I'll be slimming down to fit. If that doesn't suffice I'll bring it all to work and get the oxy torch started. Those studs don't stand a chance. I'll have to find a flat enough surface to sand down the manifolds once they're off the turbos, I don't really feel like either buy a coffee table or borrow one from friends I cleaned the engine using petrol, but as I have to get some more today I'll give E85 a try (it's half as expensive, and probably even more efficient). haydnw you HAVE to start a thread here, I want the entire story. If you were nearer I'd be pestering you to see it haha. Shamals are insane, a friend bought one recently because it was only 19,000 euros but it looked like this. Needless to say, he'll redo it entirely! yoeddynz , I'll remember that name if my cunning plan doesn't work. I've heard about some 'pipe-fitting spanners' here (it was in French so the translation isn't accurate), basically a mix between a six-point ring spanner and an open spanner: the opening is just large enough to let, say, a brake pipe through. Ray Singh , I have found this picture to best describe my feelings towards the adventure I've got myself into: except my pants aren't nearly as awesome

Clean g/box I've started putting the front back together The new bumper I have doesn't attach the same way on the sides, I'm not sure how I'll deal with this. Rear main seal out, and as of tonight the spigot bearing too Using that fancy tool I've made Hey haydnw if I manage to put the car back together before RRG do you want me to bring along the clutch centering thingy and that there slide hammer? Hopefully I shouldn't need them for a while...

That's probably the cleanest gearbox I've seen that's already been bolted to an engine. O.o

Car was back together, it even ran, on straight pipes it sounds insane.
Until I saw two coolant leaks underneath: both banjo fittings on both turbos leak. They are near impossible to tighten up with the engine in the car.
We'll be at RRG, but in a white Multipla.
Oh well.

Is there no way you could make some absurdly long reach fancy tool to tighten them up? I guess you have thought of everything though.

I'll see about that when I'm back, as you can imagine I keep running through all the schemes I can dream up to put this back on the road.
Oh and here's a stupid video I made on Monday

Sounds good. Well as good as it can on laptop speakers. You'll be itching to get it back on the road when you get back from RRG!!!

Ah, so it was you in the white multipla! I read about you trying to come over in the Maserati before i left for my holiday/rrg trip, but couldn't find it, so i assumed the car didn't make it. Only the morning we left i realised the multipla was on french plates.
