You can tax a car without a log book if you fill in the log book application form (v62??) at the post office, that then acts as a log book allowing you to tax the car.
I recently got a fine though for not declaring a scrap astra off the road. Thing is though, I did! I bought the car for £50, and immiediately cashed in the tax and declared SORN at the same time. Got a letter back from the DVLA saying that as the car was still registered at the previous keepers address I couldnd get a tax refund or declare SORN. Rang them up expecting to be bullshitted off the phone but they were very helpful and said that as soon as they had recieved the logbook in my name they would refund the tax to me from the date they recieved the tax disc and declare sorn for me. Yay for DVLA!
Recieved the tax refund, then 2 months later recieved a fine for not declaring sorn and a a bill for the "unpaid" tax, about £110 in all. Twunts. Ive sent them a letter with a photocopy of the cheque used to refund the tax and a polite letter telling them as Ive done nothing wrong they wont be getting a penny from me. DVLA went from heros to zeros very quickly in my book! I'm still waiting to see if they are still persuing the fine, but of course they never send you a letter to say they are not chasing you, you just worry about it for the next 12 months or so.....

Absolutely forgot! Guess what was outside work at dinner? Transit Tax inspection van! Looks like theres a students Corsa clamped and big-yellow-stickered and spotted two hi rise cameras on poles looking both ways on the main road, attached to metal boxes, locked to lamp posts like plants clinging onto bamboo! Must be on a mission, but its end of the month! ?

I think the death penalty is too good for em. And to think, theres probably a house being burgalled or someone being mugged just around the corner...........

Tigran if you need to tax the Capri you can go to your local DVLA office and sort it out without the v5, as long as you take some ID. No wai! *Runs off to the post office* Nope, apparently I can't.

And to think, theres probably a house being burgalled or someone being mugged just around the corner........... Not being funny like, but untaxed cars are uninsured. Having been a passenger in a car hit by an uninsured driver, i can tell you it takes fuggin' ages to get anything done about it. and I'm not going to pretend that all untaxed car drivers are murderers but i do know for a fact that all the scrotes round here have £100 untaxed sheds, and they use said sheds to drive round breaking into houses, stealing car stereos.... take their cars away regularly and they'll just have to doss in their council flats, overdose on crack and die or something. I'm all for a bit of grace and not clamping cars at 6am on the day the tax runs out, and I'm all for a friendly letter reminding you that you forgot your sorn and why not do it online now and we'll let it drop.... so it doesn't bother me them setting the cameras up over three weeks after the new disc should be there.

A car doesn't have to be road worthy to be insured, technically.

No tax doesnt invalidate the insurance like no MOT does. The thing is a good percentage of untaxed cars don't have MOT or insurance either. No need to jump on people for having out of date tax alone though IMHO

A car doesn't have to be road worthy to be insured, technically. it does if your using it on the road, policies were a bit hit and miss years ago but they are pretty tightly worded now. had one of mine towed a while back as i'd moved it off the drive so the builders could get on there and they nabbed it in the evening, went down the pound in me van and told em they could keep it but i wanted my tools and stuff back out of it. the guy was reluctant but let me in so i stripped everything off it i could, me cossie bumpers, wheels, seats, exhaust, pretty much everything i could get off before they chucked me out.

Strange I insured a car which was un-mot'd once. Obviously not for driving or anything.

You can insure un-MOT'd and untaxed cars. I've got a collectors' fleet policy and three of them on the policy are currently stored in my barn with no tax or MOT.
I no longer display the tax disc on my split bus as fcukers are always nicking it from the safari windscreen. Its always kept handy in the bus for if I ever need to produce it, but I don't leave it parked unattended in car parks, etc. so its not likely to be an issue really.

I've got 2 outstanding fines from the DVLA right now, one because the fucktards somehow misplaced my returned logbook declaring a car as scrap, so £80 fine there, and one for sending the SORN decleration back a few weeks late.... another £80 I'm not paying either of them. fair enough I sent the SORN back late but its not like I was driving it around so theres no wai i'm giving them 80 sheets for that. And as for the 'clerical error' with the scrapped car i've sent them a letter basically saying funk you and the horse you rode in on, we can have our day in court no problem, it will cost them more than it will cost me The DVLA really are the lowest of the low. No wonder people are sending them letter bombs.

You can insure a car without MoT or tax, as in they won't ask to see the documentation before issuing a certificate. Also, if your car is laid up and, say, a wall falls on it then the question is unlikely to arise and they'll pay out.
However, if you're driving an untaxed car with insurance, and have an accident, then the insurance company will check the DVLA records as a matter of course. It's worded in pretty much all regular policies that the car must be fit for the road, i.e. taxed and tested and they will use ANY way they can to get out of paying you. I know 100% that my policy through Bell, which is a Highway policy, states that the car must have a current RVL and test certificate for the insurance to be valid.
Larry and others with trader or fleet policies, yours may vary as they take into account car collection, driving other peoples uninsured cars etc.

If no MOT invalidates your insurance then how are you supposed to drive to the MOT test station legally

Because I left my name on the V5, a year later when the owner scrapped it they just read the first thing they came to which was the change of owner and processed it. Never mind that the scrapped date was the most recent I then got a nice big fine for not sorning or taxing 'my' 306.... i had to write them two snotty letters before they accepted my version of events and 'on this occasion' they waived the fine!

If no MOT invalidates your insurance then how are you supposed to drive to the MOT test station legally Because that's part of the 'deal' with MoTs, you can drive a reasonable distance to and from a test station where you have a prearranged appointment. So you're not driving illegally and hence your insurance isn't invalid.

However Plod can still prosecute for driving a dangerous vehicle, and in the event of an accident caused by the condition of the vehicle, I suspect that the insurers wouldn't cough up. Both of these circumstances are more than fair imho.
