you can work it out from the chassis number, its got a build date coded into it, google how to read the chassis number for whatever make of car and you should be able to work it out from there

Hi, what car is it? I it's BL then use the Heritage centre at Gaydon they will issue a cert to present to DVLA otherwise use the relevant owners club. Do you know when it was first registered? Do a reg check with DVLA. If it was first registered in the January then it may have been built the previous year. If it's a small or popular model, build date and reg date can be quite close. If it's a large or slow moving model it may hang around in stock for a while. You say it's on 74 plates which letter plate is it? Don't forget the letter changed in August.

Why not ask seller - they might have already done the search to see if tax exempt. Also in last budget wasn't it announced the reintroduction of a rolling 30 year tax exemption so all you'd have to do is wait a year at worse.

Owner clubs are the best option to find out even with just the reg number as some clubs have a database of cars (and before some cries data protection it doesn't apply to car details)

is the build date not written on the V5? Could you not just ask the owner for this info?

I'd work on the assumption its not, and then if it is you've got a nice bonus. Realistically, if its got a 1st reg date in Jan / Feb you've got a chance, after that (unless it wasn't a good seller) its very unlikley to be. And if its not on a M plate, I'd def say its highly unlikley to be.

i would think the free tax is 40 years from registration rather than build date as this is already on the dvla data base so easy for them to govern, also the free tax was for cars which had been on the road for 25 years thus paying enough rfl in that time to get it free so i would expect that this will still be the case except its now 40 years.

the tax exemption for historic cars goes by build date as opposed to registration date

I may as well ask since this topic is open.
I know about the fact that it is the build date which goes towards determining whether a car is tax exempt or not, but is a rolling exemption as of this moment or is it an annual rolling exemption? I ask as when my Stag's tax comes up for renewal in a few months time it will be 40 years old by the build date, but the car itself was built in March 1974 going by the VIN number. I may apply for exemption this year, or will I have to wait until April next year?

Hi, it's annual rolling exemption. If it was daily like you are hoping for, then it could be too much for DVLA and it might slow down or upset the service they provide!!
