Something about 117 coupes doesn't exite me as much as other J-coupes of the era: It's nice, and the rarity value adds to the appeal. The fact that hardly anyone knows about them would make owning one a source of constant conversation. Undeniably nice, almost classy...but not enough to be actually exciting. Obviously a wheel/stick job would improve matters, but I've never really thought that would be enough to make it really stand out as a design... Until... *drumroll* ...now: Clearly, removal of the bumpers was the key and that wheel/tyre/arch combo doesn't exactly hinder it's looks. What a stunner!

Q. Have I found the best Isuzu 117 ever?
A. YES!
Velly Velly sexeh!
OK, so the chances of 'doing one' like that in the UK is slim to none at all.
Sunbeam Rapier anyone?

That's your taste. I think I'd have classy myself *makes rod for own back* ...but how would you achieve that? My opinion wasn't that the unmodified example was 'classy', but that it was ' almost classy'. Admittedly, the modded one is less classy (in the proper sense of the word), but it's very, very cool and has realised the potential that I was finding difficult to spot. To me the 117s biggest asset was it's rarity and people's lack of knowledge about it's existence, now my desires go beyond that. I suspect that even the original designer would've been cursing about the 'modernising' of his sleek Italian inspired design or the addition of the bumpers at the required federal safety height, that take away the purity of the design.

I think I`d have the other red one with the big tattoo on the bonnet myself, see what you mean about the U.S. spec looking bumpers but I`d rather put some slim chrome ones on and keep the square lights, the modded one looks like a nice car but it doesnt look like a 117. The more you look at these the less japanese they look, more like a Fiat Dino or a 504 Pininfarina.

These always remind me of a Bristol for some reason. Were they Italian-designed? Looks Michelotti-esque to me... Pretty cool, but not my favourite J-coop...
