Nah it would have to be a Diane but couldnt find a cheap one to pull the plate off.
Hidden gem out of those i listed is the 340. There is always a surprise when comparing a wide range of cars .

2CV a hidden gem? When I bought one I (and my now wife) couldn't get rid of it fast enough, it was awful to drive on anything above 40 mph! Also there's no way the occupants of one are going to survive a crash, it literally felt like it was made from corrugated iron sheet! Having said that, the novelty of caning it round urban roundabouts at 30 mph with the door handles scraping the Tarmac took a *very* long time to wear off (for me anyway - that was just yet another reason the wife refused to get in it after a week). In the end I sold it to a guy in Malaysia(!!) on ebay for £1500 profit. I had a Lomax that was a unstarted kit found in Antwerp ! I broke a 2CV in France for the running gear and bought a galvanized rolling chassis in the UK. A visit to the scrapyard was needed for a few bits including steering column and handbrake lever. I hadn't full set of tools with me but not needed - nick with screwdriver and managed to rip the parts out of the bodyshell as it is paper thin. Never had a car where you could rip the bodywork with your hands before ! Should add however I have a lot of respect for the 2CV, and even more for the Diane, so as long as you accept you are as vunerable as if on a motorbike then then can be fun cars. What about a Acadiane ? With windows behind the front doors and rear seats (factory options) it'd be classed as an estate rather than van. Then there is the Visa / C15 van - again available with rear windows and seat option. Paul H

When I worked in Coventry a few years ago, I used to quite often follow a citroen dyane home down the 'back roads' I had a Civic Type R at the time and could barely keep up with this thing round the bends, the lean was quite a (hilarious) spectacle, one word for the driver - brave.

For the next year I have come to terms I may have to get a car not as retro as I first thought, just because of budget really. My main candidate now is a not so retro mk5 fiesta zetec s. I've been like at x reg so will only jut about I make it on this site. It's only 1300 on insurance and has a lot of potential in my opinion.

certainly worth considering, I had a mk4 as my first car, and 5 more fiesta since.
My sister has just bought the 1.25 zetec mk5 and must say its not a bad drive, I would suggest the 1.25 over the 1.3 they just seem alot more responsive.

I have looked at those but have decided more on a 1.6 zetec s as they have better presence, only 50 pound difference to insure and would be more fun to drive!

My brother had a 1.25 Mk5 before his Mk2 fiesta, was a right hoot to drive, nice handling and a revvy little engine. I imagine the 1.6 should be even better only got rid of the Mk5 cos it seemed to drink oil..

In fairness, the 1.6 zetec s is a cracking drive.
I bought a cheap one quite a few years ago, and it was pretty pokey. Honestly, I'm pretty surprised they're so cheap to insure compared to others. Maybe this was the "hidden gem" someone was mentioning before.

I think it is a hidden gem and yeah I have heard from lots of people they're really good to drive.

I just realised how cheap to insure a Toyota starlet glanza v is. I don't have much knowledge on these, all I know is that they are pretty much the same as a Toyota starlet gt and have a 1.3 turbo charged engine pushing out around 133bhp. And also that they're only available as a Japanese import. It will cost me only 1200 a year to insure. Does anybody have any further information on these or any experience in owning a similar car. Any further information would be a great help.
Thanks, jake

My mum had a normal Starlet as a company car & it was a great, I put about 12k on it when I passed my test & never killed it. Always wanted a Galanza, if you can insure one, get one!

I have never known anyone to own any kind of starlet so it's hard to get information on what they're like to own, but considering the glanza is such a rare car I think I should snatch up the opportunity.

Put it this way, it should have broke with how it was treated - it didnt. lol It had multiple rev limiter clutch drops, spent most of it's time bouncing off the rev limiter & doing handbrake/J turns & it just put up with it.
Even if you don't keep it long, it's one of those car's it would be cool to own while you can get them.

I've had a rwd starlet and they're great if you can find one, 40+mpg in standard form, easy to drive, nippy and handle well, theres loads of ways to make them go faster too. Not had or driven a modern one though.

Cinquecento sporting is only group 3 insurance, and non stop grins even without modifications. Cheap to buy and very good on fuel but I'd it retro enough?

I have ended up buying a car not really related to any of these. I have bought a BMW e36 Compact with the m44b19 engine. It is a beauty to drive and probably one of the cleanest I have seen.

Yeah surprisingly, I managed to get it for £1100 and I'm only 19! It's such a nice car! Thats a bargain at your age. 2.8 conversion is apparently a weekends work. Think you would be wanting an LSD then tho lol. I had my 318ti sport for 18 months and only issue i had in that time wad a front caliper seizing. also the drivers window mech failed but that was a replacement done by a garage before i got it, who failed to grease it up correctly. Great cars, would have another.
