At 20 I was paying around 700 for insurance on my MGB GT, which has now dropped by a couple hundred now I'm 22, my brother whos 19 has just got insurance on his Mk2 Fiesta for around 650. Its gonna come down to a lot of factors really, post code being a big one. I don't take too much notice of car/engine size when looking now as I got a quote on a 6.75 litre Rolls Royce for 15 quid less than my 1.8 MGB but this may show that driving things which the insurance companies aren't seeing lots of young lads write off could help Jut wondering do you know the company your friend with the fiesta is with? Pretty interested in mk2 fiestas.

I was speaking to a 19 year old lad the other week about van insurance. He was driving a nice moggy saloon, which he had made look well, and go pretty well. We got onto the subject of moggy vans, as he always wanted one. He said he couldn`t get insurance on the van, as insurance companies wouldn`t touch him on a commercial vehicle because of his age. It`s a bit odd, because he also had a Rolls Royce of some sort and an Armstrong Siddeley; both insured with the same company who wouldn`t insure him on the Moggy van.
I`ve no idea whether this was just specific to the insurance company or not, but worth a mention either way.

Even at my age (56) and retired I couldn't get anything other than commercial insurance on my van (03 Peugeot Expert). Premium was more than I pay for my other cars all together !

I've been getting quotes for every van under the sun and the cheapest I can seem to get is 6495 on a Bedford rascal. So I think a van is a bit out of my budget. There is a mk2 fiesta I've been looking to buy and the cheapest I have been quoted is 1359. Does anyone know any good companies that are likely to be cheap??

I don`t know whether you will be able to get a classic policy, with limited miles due to your age, but i`d certainly be looking into it and trying the specialist companies. If you limit your miles to say, 5000 a year and can adhere to specifics on a classic policy, it would save you a big chunk of money.
Also, i`m not sure how you`re getting these quotes, but don`t use comparison sites. Take an afternoon, and phone as many companies as you can with the same car details. Don`t be afraid of playing them off against each other, and tell them you`re looking to take the policy out by the close of business that day (even if you`re not, this provides a little urgency for the salesman to get you the best deal.
I can`t advise about any specific companies to use, as i`ve only ever dealt with trade insurance for the last 10 years. i`d certainly phone brokers too though, and let them do the leg work.

Yeah I have been looking Into classic insurance company's but they all seen to say they won't insure a one under the age of 21. There may be a company out there that Will but I will have to search for it! And yeah it seems as though the best thing to do would be to do what you said and take an afternoon of calling them (: Thanks mate!

Footman James, got similar quotes from Peter James and from One insurance at the time.
Dafs in general are cheap to buy run and insure. I had the whole package, roadworthy, solid car, tax, MOT and insurance for less than £1k

The other problem you're likely to run into with classic policies (if you can find one that will touch you at 18) is that most don't like giving classic policies if you don't have another car Insured in its own right.
FWIW I'm with footman James and they were by far the cheapest of all the classic quotes I had (wont say how much because I don't want to depress you) came with a surprising level of cover too, 10k miles PA, breakdown, European cover etc etc

Christ! That's expensive! I was insuring an Impreza Sti import through Tesco at 19 (12 years ago) for not much more than that! Looking back, although we though insurance was a fortune back then, we were certainly in a better place than young drivers now.

It was but I was 17, no ncb & only 7 months driving experience (was actually 6 years but that didnt count lol) plus car was in SK14 which is one of the highest risk areas lol. Insurance has always been expensive, I was only on £350 a month back then lol. You did well to get an Impreza insured, I couldnt get quotes on much over the 205.

Yeah, i was pretty amazed on a wet Saturday afternoon when I was bored and did my usual trick of bothering insurance companies asking for random quotes, when the Impreza came back not much more than the S2 RS turbo i had at the time! Needless to say, it took me less than a week to find a new car, much to my mums dismay!
Its true about postcodes too, they seem to make a massive difference!

Did a quick comparethemarket on the cars I linked, using an 18y/o with 1yncb as a test, got these back: Ren 11 | £2460 | BMW 520 | £5604 | Saab 900 | £3230 | Jaag XJ6 | £4690 |
Kinda glad I'm old, lol. But it may give you an idea on how much prices vary. Edit, some more: 2CV | £1530 | Volvo 340 DL 3dr | £2265 | Pug 505 GTi | £4385 | MK1 Civic 1.2 | £2451 | Accord Aerodeck Auto | £2481 |
Those prices are all curse word, but useful for finding that hidden gem that is cheaper to insure, then you can try and get cheap quotes on the hidden gem if you get what I mean.

2CV a hidden gem? When I bought one I (and my now wife) couldn't get rid of it fast enough, it was awful to drive on anything above 40 mph! Also there's no way the occupants of one are going to survive a crash, it literally felt like it was made from corrugated iron sheet!
Having said that, the novelty of caning it round urban roundabouts at 30 mph with the door handles scraping the Tarmac took a *very* long time to wear off (for me anyway - that was just yet another reason the wife refused to get in it after a week).
In the end I sold it to a guy in Malaysia(!!) on ebay for £1500 profit.
