Hello there happy people! As mentioned in my roof rack topic, I think I'm going to go for a Cal Look sort of thing with my imp. It will either work, and look dead cool, or it will be horrendous and horrible! As someone mentioned in the aforementioned topic, the look works with the notchback VW, so an imp could work? I think the colour of my car would really suit the look. Couple of reasons I want to try it...... 1) I need to cover the dent in the roof with something, roofrack sounds like the best idea! 2) I LOVE Cal Look VWs, and I would do anything to own one, but the cost and "scene" tax etc puts me off a bit (read- alot!) I just like the idea of taking a look that I love, and applying it to a completely different scene and something else I also love! So, need some ideas! This is the roof rack: I might try a bit of fettling with it, probably get it chromed or shiny-fied somehow. And obviously, I shall have to trawl round the charity shops for some retro suitcases! I was also thinking about a boot rack, but it will be tricky to find one that is small enough and also matches the roof rack. Wheels are another problem, what would you suggest? I'm thinking with the colour of my car chromed wheels would look good, but NOT minilites/superlites/ultralites/megalites/uberlites/nightlites thank you! What 13", 4" PCD wheels could be used on a cal look car? 13" Dunlop D1s could work for a BRM look, but they are nigh on unobtainable and even less affordable! Car's going another step lower at the front. The front montes (which are currently fitted) level the car, but another inch should give it a little bit of rake Bumper overriders can easily be acquired. What other accessories should I look out for? Do you think the look could work, and if so, how can I make it? Lastly, here's the car getting the treatment, I think the colour would really work personally... (has since been crashed and lowered at the front )

I reckon that's what it's all about. With the right wheels it would look excellent!!!

With the right wheels it would look excellent!!! What are they then?! Haha, I genuinely can't think of anything I've seen in imp fitment........ guess I could look into redrilled hubs etc.... I challenge you all to find some suitable wheels

do the wheels have to be 13's i thought imps were 12's, u can get dunlops in 12's for not silly money and then detail em to look like fusch wheels. Just de rust and spray the rack silver, or powder coated?? think those peep mirrors would look wicked, then its just a spattering of moon eye stickers and your away.
it was me that said imp's look like notch back's whoooooooooh I'm famous!!!!

Widened steels painted cars colour inner, and white lip, and whiteside tires first thought that popped into my head atleast Hmm, wonder how the stretched tyre\slammed car euro style would look on a imp? Get some poke going on with lots of lip ;D

Actually, if you're planning a roof rack and accessories then your approach is more Resto-Cal look than just Cal look. Wheels wise, some Cosmics or the like (in Viva fitment 4" pcd) would fit the bill in a BRM-a-like stylie, two 'racks seems a bit OTT to me though.

Cal Look has changed now tho. Watched a program with the guys who invented Cal Look and their take on it was a lowered car, on a slight forwards rake, with smoothed bodywork (usually removal of bumpers etc), flawless paint and a nice interior. Roof racks didnt come into it they took stuff off didnt add anything.

Fair play! I've always referred to it as Cal Look, but I suspect (read "know") you guys are right and I'm probably describing more the Restocal! Thinking about it, ^^^ that makes sense, bumper T-bars etc! Thread title shall be amended! I'm not a fan of cosmic wheels I'm afriad, I can't stand them tbh! As standard the imp is 12" wheels, but 13s fill the arches alot better IMO, even when lowered, without the need for ha-uugge tyres! I'm trying to think what other wheels could look good chromed? Certainly thinking about hub mods to make the PCD either 100mm or 108mm (golf etc and ford I hope?)

I'm wondering if chromed revolutions would work ....
when detailed the porsche fuch is the ultimate cal-look wheel, yet when polished/chromed its the perfect resto-cal rim. Maybe revolutions would also make that swap well (I'm thinking the dished 5 spoke)
I'm sure Larry will be on here later too ... him and I were only last week discussing giving my rapid the resto-cal treatment

^^^I'm with the chromed Revo-look....A quick glance through either of the Mini magazines would give you an idea of cost (and Mini PCD's the same as Imp PCD.... :-) )

The trouble with minlites on an Imp is they have become a uniform for modded cars and frankly (pardon the pun) its getting a little dull to see rows and rows of them at events. To all those Impers reading with these rims fitted, I mean you no ill thought etc but I just simply don't like em.
I mentioned on here a while back a set of of banded steels to fit an Imp - a mate has a set with reasonable to good tyres (175/70x12in) that he'd sell for £100. They are currently a bit of a scabby matt black - I reckon a coat of paint and they'd look fly. They do need balancing tho...
Roof rack - hmm. Slows you down, buggers your fuel economy and scrapes up your gutters... not a fan meself, but each to their own.
Liking those peep mirrors... very fly.
Rather than follow a look, why not come up with something new y'self? I mean, who would have thought that we would have gone fuzzy around the toilet parts over matt paint, chequered roofs and external oil coolers a few years ago...?
If you're interested in the rims, let me know and when you pick that rad up from me we can take a trip over and take a gander - he lives about five miles from me.

I think the trims as on the back, nicely polished would be suitable.

Those are nice* but I don't think they'd suit the theme. I like the chrome revolutio idea. For the car as a whole I think you need to plan it from start to finish rather than just throw random stuff on it 'cos you've seen it on a beetle. I don't know the veedub rules of engagement for what's called what but here's a nice notchback MIght not be resto cal as such as its got a bit of a racer-y feel to me with the bullet mirror and light meshes. *edit to say I'm talking about the minilight type wheels!
