Where the time gone.
Rover failed its MOT so the Stag is now the daily driver. Wish It was finished, it a car you have to drive. Not a great deal of fun in this weather but at least the hardtop is on.

Having one or two issues with the car as i was forced to drive it for a few weeks while i mended my daily driver. The clutch is hard to get a clean move off. I have seen these which look like they might solve the shock to the drive line. Has anyone any experience with these.

If they are what I think they are they are just a restrictor and one way valve, they limit the max rate at which the clutch can be engaged which helps in limiting the peak driveline loads during an agressive pullaway but they won't really help when you are pulling away normaly. Often it is the driveline stifness(including engine mounts) and clutch interacting, my lotus judders on pullaway in reverse but not forward, using a higher engine speed can help.

Thanks, yes that right these limit/restrict the back flow so the clutch slightly slips. Ive seen one that works electronically and only restrict in first gear.
The issues may be something that i have over looked. Ill have to re-check the whole drive train. But i think it will either be a new clutch setup or try one of these.

I have a BMW set up in my 1uz and single plate clutch Apart from it being a tad heavy in traffic it's fine

Most of the Frontera/Brava/Monterey/Trooper models had something very similar in the clutch circuit, Vauxhall/Isuzu call it a damper assembly, they all vary from model to model but a few part numbers are Isuzu 8971328410, Vauxhall 97180929
I think a lot of the Range Rovers, Land Rovers used something similar which would make it a cheap part to source and try?

Long time lurker on the site. Great car you've put together there. You'll need to change the clutch from paddle to full plate to get rid of the juddering. Had the same issues after fitting a paddle clutch. Not really suited to normal road use. Great in something that's getting launched all the time.

The plate in the clutch are full, someone did say the paddle may eliminate the judder. I did look into the BMW set up but to get a clutch/gearbox combo to handle the Turbo it would have had to have been the electronic manual box. The box with uprated plates and aftermarket ECU to control the gearbox was going to work out at about £5000 plus dyno time.
I didn't realise how totally unsuited a 184mm race clutch and lighten flywheel is for normal daily use. With hindsight I should have used the Mcleod clutch which I got with the new gearbox.

Last chance to get the clutch sorted i saw these. These seem better as they can b e switched off for the rest of the gears when you don't need any slip. But at $250 plus all the shipping and taxs, not really worth it, it is better than the Tilton/Clutch Masters though.
Looking at the parts it looks easy to make. All you need is a 12v solanoid, 2 "T's" a Uni flow valve, unions and brake pipe. Parts ordered should cost less than £60. Just need to get the ECU to detected gear box speed out put, that way the ECU can allow slip in first, reverse and possibly 2nd if the revs are low.

Been looking into the vibrations i get at 1600-1800 rpm. It's not the gearbox or flywheel. Could be the clutch even though it was new, balanced and was fitted correctly.
One tuner said it because of the scavenge pump on the front of the engine. However, i fitted new pistons and rods which were not just stronger but lighter.
So could this cause an unbalance that could result in the vibration i get. I know engines are balanced by the webs/counterweights and v8 are not a balanced engine (That's why the sound like they do) compared to v6 or v12. As a result any slight difference in weights would be amplified on a v8 to that of a straight 4 or v6.
Any thoughts before i strip the engine and send the crank, flywheel, clutch, front pulley, rods and pistons for balancing.

My V8 is internally balanced and is virtually solid mounted to the chassis (urethane bushes) and has virtually novibration at all at any revs.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the crankshaft balanced in relation to the piston and rod weight? So if the pistons are lighter, the crank would need rebalancing to compensate

Not normally, no. that would involve some serious machinery to work out. Normally crank is balaced with or without flywheel/harmonic balancer and pistons/con rods are also individually balanced (but matched to each other).

That what i think is causing the vibration. The aftermarket rod and pistons are lighter but the crank is balanced for the old ones. "The mass of the crankshaft counterweights should equal 100 percent of the rotating mass and 50 percent of the reciprocating mass"
The rotating mas hasn't changed but the reciprocating mass has. This slight change, pistons and rods, is possibly enough to cause the vibration. If its not this then i have no idea as everything else is balanced.
It is odd though it only happens in gear moving, if the car is not in gear it will rev freely no issues.
So ill have to strip the engine and have it all balanced together.

If it only happens when moving are you sure its not driveline related? If it is out of balance the shells should tell a tale, maybe drop sump and pull a few end caps off first?

the whole drive train other than the diff and clutch has been changed and the problem didn't change. The diff was fine before this rebuild. Its not road speed related but engine speed, so the furthest back it could be is the input shaft
Its a dry sump and its very close to the cross member not sure it it will come off with the engine in situ.

it's quite normal for crank, front pulley, rods etc and flywheel to be balanced as a set, although a bit old school these days. That engine is smooth as silk in normal spec so it could well be a resonance caused by the mismatched parts.
