Yeah but that's all that will happen. Everyone will whine about it and be up in arms about it on the internet. They might even feel soo strongly they might even email their mp. That's all that will happen. You can't stop progress when we're such a small minority and most people cant be bothered when it comes to it. So we should just sit back and allow anything and everything to happen in this world without even a hint of a comment? Pretty sure promoting apathy is even worse than actual apathy itself Legislation which will directly effect the freedom of the type of people who use this forum, ie fans of older cars. I'd say it's pretty justified to be a bit miffed!

This is clearly not going to actually happen. Let's have a thread about bamboo rollcages instead.

This is clearly not going to actually happen. Even though it already has in Germany? I'd rather err on the side of caution and show my opposition.

Sorry Ade, I don't mean to take away from your point. I'm with you on the whole "stick it to The Man" thing.
I have lived and worked in the LEZ so it's probably more poignant to me than most of the folks on here.
My only (slightly drunken) point was that this whole thread is a bit lacking in facts and reminiscent of the ACE thing from about a year ago.

I'd love to get more info. Like the working hours part that has been mentioned? I've not seen that mentioned anywhere.... Any links?

So I had a look into all this. It is part of a plan to make London free of ALL petrol and diesel cars by 2020 during working hours. I'm neither here not there on it, on one hand I can see that it is going to hamper a fair number of people who wish to drive into the city during the day, on the other hand I'd be rather glad to have less cars, less diesel smoke and mildly less polluted city to walk and ride around. Who knows what it'll do to traffic patterns though, as I'm guessing the large delivery lorries are still going to be diesel so will have to come in out of commuting hours (maybe that'll stop them running over cyclists for a few weeks). This thread is drifting dangerously close to not being particularly of retro interest, or being particularly well informed, so unless someone has some more actual info to add I propose we spend some time in some other threads talking about old modified cars Nuff said really Cant see it happening as Princess Anne has a Scimitar ya know .....

I'm following them on twitter and it's not just about the co2 levels it's mainly the no2 from derv fumes. You'll be very hard pushed to beat them in an argument tbh as they've got all the figures and know their stuff. It's about air quality and when they put the maps up showing where the pollution is concentrated and at what levels it's pretty surprising.

They don't answer any questions. A guy asked how small businesses will be helped to prepare to cope with replacing vehicles, the reply was along the lines of "we must ban diesel vehicles as a high source of NO2"
:/
I asked (even though I'm nowhere near London) if me pootling to the shops once a week in my 20 year old mini was worse than daily trips by transporters of new cars. Didn't get a reply...

I think the logistics of getting this all done will mean it doesn't happen...
That is what I'm hoping anyway!!!
However, if this does happen my main worry would be that this would only be the beginning of something that could go to many major cities in the UK... It is inevitable that this will be the case if this sceme is put into place.
As for working hours, whaterver happened to the old 9-5 eh...?!

Hmm if we still had our deep mines and had invested in carbon capture and cleaner burning coal technology we wouldn't be dependant on foreign powers for fuel imports and wouldn't be getting as royally screwed for all our energy prices. I think the logistics of getting this all done will mean it doesn't happen... That is what I'm hoping anyway!!! The infrastructure is all already in place, all it would require is Boris to wave his magic pen and send out a letter to every registered non compliant car owner in the affected area telling them as of 2016 for example they will either have to get rid of their vehicle or have emmisions control gear fitted at there own cost to drive within the LEZ - oh and its for the good of London. Thats it - done we are all screwed. As I said its already been done with HGV's and vans

I think the logistics of getting this all done will mean it doesn't happen... The logistics are already basically in place since every vehicle that goes in/out of the C-zone (which is the area mentioned under the super-lez proposal) is already logged. From a personal perspective I suppose I hope that historic/tax exempt vehicles are exempt from it as they are from the existing LEZ.(I would love to chug about town in a diesel belching old Commer truck or something - just once would do. )

Legislation in the form of an admitted 'blunt instrument' is unfair.

Surely the production of a new car must be more damaging to the environment, what with the consumption of raw materials, including rare metals in things like cats, emissions from the factories and the amount of energy used. Not to mention the horrible batteries in electric and hybrid cars. You should see the underground car park at the houses of parliament, full of old Rollers, Bentleys, Bristols and Jags. about time the car companies were forced to offer replacement more effeicent engines for all their older models - imagine that, drive your 1982 car into the dealers and leave with a brand spanking new eco friendly engine.. that way would help both worlds loads

Just to give you some perspective on this Milan has been banning cars on a Sunday. Paris has now banned cars on alternative days and have made public transport free. Have a look on the bbc news website. If they can do it in mainland Europe they can do it here. And remember it isn't about banning old cars its about reducing air pollution.
