This is curse word. Autocar sensationalism. The low emission zone will be discussed soon, and the article says this could be in the congestion charging zone only. Stop worrying. Charlie Ohh right, like the Daily Express saying we were due 20 foot of snow in January A rather vague forecast. Nay to worry then, not one to frequent the big smoke anyway Full of Cockneys so I have been told....

You should see the underground car park at the houses of parliament, full of old Rollers, Bentleys, Bristols and Jags. That'll be the reason it won't happen. You should also check out the huge vault of a car park that runs underground from the rotunda by the Barbican towards Bishopsgate. Apparently spaces are practically given away to residents of the city (one arm and leg per hour to outsiders) and consequently it's like a museum down there, lots of interesting dusty old cars and bikes with flat tyres and surviving bits of the original Roman wall as a nice backdrop.

On a plus note it would make a retro purchase cheaper for us who live outside of the big smoke! Then when its rolled out over the rest of the country we can move our cars on to the US and crash their classic market...
TBH I don’t see it happening.

So I had a look into all this. It is part of a plan to make London free of ALL petrol and diesel cars by 2020 during working hours. I'm neither here not there on it, on one hand I can see that it is going to hamper a fair number of people who wish to drive into the city during the day, on the other hand I'd be rather glad to have less cars, less diesel smoke and mildly less polluted city to walk and ride around. Who knows what it'll do to traffic patterns though, as I'm guessing the large delivery lorries are still going to be diesel so will have to come in out of commuting hours (maybe that'll stop them running over cyclists for a few weeks). This thread is drifting dangerously close to not being particularly of retro interest, or being particularly well informed, so unless someone has some more actual info to add I propose we spend some time in some other threads talking about old modified cars

Perhaps it's best to hold back on the hysteria for a while. Think through the practicalities of making the majority of London motorists sell their cars and how they'd need to be compensated... Really, think of the practicalities of making everybody who runs a pre 2000 diesel van within the M25 get shut or pay £200 daily for the privilidge of doing so, think thats too much of a job? Well surprise - they've already done it! Nobody was offered any compensation or get outs (unless you want to spend £3k on a particulate filter and then 6 monthly testing) and this came in at the time when for most people the recession was biting hardest. You do what you are told or you pay the price. It wouldn't just be in central London either as they've already got all the infrastructure in place to push it out to the LEZ area. Diesels will be first to be hit, then petrols that don't meet the Euro 5 emmisions standard. The MP's and 'posh' people quoted will mostly be running pre '73 motors which will be exempt, so don't count on them to do anything, think how big a voice the haulage industry has here - made NO difference they were the first ones affected by the LEZ. People don't realise how big an area the LEZ covers......... Sorry this is a bit of a negative rant but.....

What they fail to realise is the enormous amount of methane cyclists emit. I mean when we did Land's End to John O'Groats a while back the diet was absolutely amazing in terms of the old botty-burps department. We could see the ozone layer disappearing over our heads.
I shall always cherish the moment the guy in front of me lifted his derriere off the saddle just as we passed the ladies bingo squad waiting at the bus stop. Laugh? - we nearly died! Especially as he'd decided to go commando that day due to saddle chaff.

The first ever possible instance of restricting the use of cars due to their age? I'd say this is very much a topic of interest for retro car owners, and one that certainly needs protested, and at the very least needs to be kept tabs on.
If it goes ahead where will it end?

Ive driven in London a fair bit. Every time it leaves me wondering why anybody drives in London. It is far quicker to walk, and 90% of the other traffic seemed to be people going to work and therefore not needing the load capacity of.a car like I did.

You've just got to accept that times are changing. The time of the motor car is over. There's no point in trying to drive in London it's just too congested and if you walk you die from the fumes. Probably be a much nicer place without cars creeping along at 2ft every 5 minutes.

It is part of a plan to make London free of ALL petrol and diesel cars by 2020 during working hours. Is there such a thing as 'working hours' or commuting time in 'that there London' ? I'll still sleep OK tonight, it's only Boris being a wicked little boy

Probably be a much nicer place without cars creeping along at 2ft every 5 minutes. Since I do it generally at least once a week: I can get across town in the middle of a weekday far quicker by car than I could by public transport, driving right through the middle - avoiding the C charge Zone by using Edgware Rd, Park Lane, Victoria one way etc. Rarely do I get caught in any bad traffic and since I am in a car I can carry all the tools/car parts etc I will need at my destination. Those who complain about driving in London either don't do it often enough, don't pick their routes or are unable to pick their times.

If it goes ahead where will it end? In 2020 with all petrol and diesel cars not able to drive in London during working hours. If it does get put in place it won't end there. It'll surely be taken up in other areas in the UK also. People's views on London and its traffic are almost beside the point here to me. I'd say it would be naive to think that this legislation being approved would be anything but the start of a rapid decline for the freedom to use whatever cars we choose.

I both drive and walk in London and I'm able to a) get where I'm going in a timely fashion and b) stay alive. I'd suggest that perhaps you're talking through your hat, old chap.

Your suggestion is wrong old bean. I can only go on what I've experienced myself. I've only driven in the centre in rush hour due to work a couple of times and it was a complete nightmare. So I can only judge by rush hour standard really. I'll be back there at the sky studios this coming Friday and the car will be safely parked up and be using the underground as always. Doesn't matter how much you all whine on the internet about it it's going to happen as no one will stand against it.

Yeah but that's all that will happen. Everyone will whine about it and be up in arms about it on the internet. They might even feel soo strongly they might even email their mp. That's all that will happen. You can't stop progress when we're such a small minority and most people cant be bothered when it comes to it.
