[quote author=" georgeb" I suppose the problem they have is although Taal volcano is quite small, the lake in the caldera in which it sits is 22km at it's widest point, so obviously something pretty spectacular happened a good while back. Spoke to my lawyer who lives a bit further south today, and she's still okay but is definitely baiting her breath! Yeah - I thought just that when I looked Taal up on google maps. Small.....? Depends which bit you look at! In my book anything that made a hole 22km across needs to be viewed with concern if it starts kicking off again...… Nick[/quote] Yeah, I had a quick gander at Google..... Hmmm, didn't realise Pinatubo was so close as well. Mind you, in comparison, Taal looks like a more serious contender to the Worlds Most Loudest Bang cometition (unless you count the cretin who drives his latest 'souped up' car past my house every night at ten pm backfiring like Frankenhealey's Bob The Dog..) Be careful out there George.

According to my volcanology lecturer, One should definitely be more wary of volcanos that are mostly hole than the ones that stick up a long way. Ask yourself where the stuff that used to be in the hole went.......
Krakatoa is down that way somewhere too. That turned itself from a fair sized mountain into a big hole in a very short time. 25 cubic kilometres ejected, much of it in one go. Allegedly the bang was heard in Perth.......

Well according to the ‘experts’ the whole of Yellowstone park is one super volcano, which if it goes bang will wipe the states off the face of the earth Not sure where that leaves yogi bear?

Found this rather spectacular picture taken last night of lightning in the ash cloud. One of the challenges with the bushfires down here was that they started to create their own weather, including lightning. Which started more fires, which joined the existing fires and made them bigger, so they continued to make their own weather...

Stay calm and drink beer... is always the right answer I've quoted these together because, not only are they penned by two of the wisest minds on the board, obviously, but also, as philosophical comments, they are both sagacious and perfectly complimentary. TAAAANIAAAA! Well according to the ‘experts’ the whole of Yellowstone park is one super volcano, which if it goes bang will wipe the states off the face of the earth Not sure where that leaves yogi bear? And it's been going to do that for years, hasn't it? I'm sure I read something about it in Look and Learn, just after the bit that said we'd all be in flying cars by 1990. Now who's showing his age? One of the challenges with the bushfires down here was that they started to create their own weather, including lightning. Which started more fires, which joined the existing fires and made them bigger, so they continued to make their own weather... Australia invents perpetual motion. But, yes, it's a problem when stuff like this creates micro-climates. At least here, buried under a layer of ash, there's nowt to catch fire.
