Not enough. Setting up a fix date? Thirty years and roll on system would be much better. There are so many gret cars from the roaring eighties...

My babe is from 83, and I have to pay more than £130 for a half a year tax.. This why I can not really apprecciate this. I hope, there are plenty of cars made befor 1974, but maybe much more left from the eighties, and it's not fair at all.

Tax exempt status is not some sort of entitlement anyone is due just because some other people benefit from it. I'd have to pay the congestion charge if I drove into central London in the middle of a weekday but that doesn't mean I whinge that owners of Nissan Leafs don't.

83? Not fair? My Escort was built 14th Jan 74, that IS not fair, runs away to hide his tears from a Chancellor's Beer Fund sponsoring weep.....

Does anyone know how to go about getting it if my car is registered in 73? Is it automatic or do I need to send stuff to them!?

Ridicolous. What can we expect from Cameron's useless government?? Would be nice if we could expect end up with an educational system where people come out without a ridiculous sense of self-entitlement.

Does anyone know how to go about getting it if my car is registered in 73? Is it automatic or do I need to send stuff to them!? You have to let them know, this is what I got sent from someone on an MG forum who had been talking to the DVLA about this As the taxation class is not already shown as Historic Vehicle on the V5C for your vehicle you must apply by post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DZ. The V5C must show a date of manufacture prior to the 01.01.1973. If this is not recorded on the V5C but the vehicle was manufactured prior to this date you will need to produce dating evidence. The keeper will need to write ‘Historic’ in the change to taxation class field in section 7 of the V5C and sign section 8. If the application is successful, you will receive your tax disc within 2 weeks. An updated V5C will be returned within 4 weeks. Not sure where this leaves me though as my tax runs out at the end of March, so either I need to find out if I can start my application before April or I'm gonna have to pay for tax then get it refunded, or go SORN for a couple weeks
