Apologies for a pretty dull thread but I'm after some advice. I'm looking to replace my daily with something bigger but it has to be good on fuel (at least 30mpg, preferably closer to 40).
I work in film for a living and it'd be awesome to have something that's suitable for shooting out the back of as well.
So far I was thinking:
Audi A4 1.9tdi Estate Merc E220 Estate (bonus of rear facing seats) BMW 318i Touring (bonus of boot window opening independently of boot door)
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

If you drive like Miss Daisy then 45mpg is more than achievable.

Bit of an oddball suggestion but how about a laguna dci 150? Bought mine cheap but it's worth around 2k on a 56 plate. leathers, nav, bluetooth etc and it too has opening rear glass screen separate to bootlid. 45mpg all day long

Get a 525 TDS and get it chipped too, they are lacking in low down torque as standard, BMW de-tuned them as they are uncomfortably close to the petrol 525i. I had a 525 TDS tourer that I chipped and loved it. Pay very close attention to the sills though as the thick stone-guard does an exceptional job of hiding grot as they rot from the inside out. Tourer has big twin power sunroof thingy and glass opens separate from tailgate which is really handy. Not so handy is if the gas struts for the glass are tired and it comes back down on your head! Build quality of E34 is top notch.
Take a look at my website for some useful snippets of info on the E34, look in the 'Project Brattwurst' section.

Mmmmmm Also available to Vauxhall flavour too, still got the same 2.5 BMW engine out of the 525TDS... I had an Omega, granted it was a petrol V6 one but it drove lovely, had an awesome spec (even had electric rear sunblinds!) and was mega cheap. Yes they suffer from zero image but they are genuinely awesome cars. I'd have another in a heartbeat.

Get your self a early B5 passat tdi estate or a A4 tdi with the AFN 110bhp engine. Its the one before the pd engine came out P to V reg. They go like stink and will do an easy 55mpg.
The later PD engines in the B5 w reg on are ok but stay away from the 130 bhp engine there sub 40 mpg and the 6 speed box is just a gimmick. You'll soon get feb up of changing gear 6 times by the time your do 40mph.
Ive got a 110 afn passat, Its done 300k and still pulls 120mph (on the track of course), But it has been well serviced. There galvanised to so no rust as such to worry about. Build quality is better on the older cars to there was quite a few cost cutting measures on the B5.5 models.

Rover 75 Estate Diesel or Mg version. BMW engine that goes like a rocket. They are easy to buy a tuning box for cheaply (£60) and that car still gave me 50mpg and flew. Fantastic engine + really comfy.

Sat on the motorway at 70-80 itll be doing about 50mpg comfortably, a newer e39 may even be better, old ones are bosch mechanical pumps, run fine on veg oil.
Particularly comfortable, quiet and not bad sounding at all for an old diesel.

Fantastic engine + really comfy. I have a Rover 75 CDT saloon at the moment, 116bhp as standard but looking at the 160bhp remap. It certainly doesn't go like a rocket as standard (the 1.8 turbo goes quite well though) but it does handle better than the older E34 even though it's wrong wheel drive. The Rover model is very comfortable, haven't been in an MG variant. The 525 TDS chip by the way takes it from 135bhp to a claimed 170. Certainly goes well! Unlike many diesels that seem to have a distinct power band this engine drove like a petrol and would happily keep pulling up to the redline. I put this down to it being a six-pot and so having smaller chambers for the same overall capacity. From within the muffled confines of the cabin it sounded a bit V8-esque when giving it some. Apparently, if you do a lot of dual carriageway/motorway cruising the auto is more economical as it has longer gearing in top. Cruise control is also a doddle to fit apparently, all you need is the stalk (it's a fly-by-wire throttle).

I had a pd130 vrs witch did silly mpg, and my mate has a gttdi 130 remapped which equally does 50+mpg and is as fast as my 1.8t anniversary. And you really miss the six speed box if you go back to a 5 speed mk5.

The old man gets 55MPG when not on a run! (When towing a dolly and an escort on the back, she managed a solid 38-39MPG and that was doing 70...) Sisters BMW 320td gives 57.8MPG mixed on a run... Diesel the way to go, get it remapped and a few minor tweaks (blank egr etc)

Maybe mine was a bad one then but my 130 sport 6 speed would only average hi 30,s low 40,s mpg couple of people i know have had them and said the same through. I did go back to the 5 speed box afn 110 and i found it a lot more pleasing to drive.

However, after reading your MPG figures I am doubting that yours was standard; I suspect a previous owner may have had it 'fettled'. As for reliability, the build quality seems generally good but I think that some have become victims of shody maintenance by dodgy garages in the past who have just seen the car as one of those dodgy old Rovers that can be turned into a meal ticket.

No fettling - just short journeys max 4 miles- killing mpg on all my cars over 20yrs 75s do feel solid - but bits do fall off. Both cars had good histories .In fact the kv6 had all MOTs from Day 1 To be fair though - the Y reg KV6 Conny with ultra rare extras totalling 5k cost me £750 with 3 months tax and 6 months test- back in 2009.The Y reg CDT classic with full fresh service, leaks fixed and 12months tax and 12 months test cost me £500
