I've got a 2003 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR Estate, bit of an odd ball to look at, but very comfortable, and economical, i've had 60+mpg driving sensibly, and 40+ mpg around town, they are resonably well equipped, and i've managed to get my double airbed in the back. I bought the car off Ebay (before the auction ended) for £550, with 10 mths MoT, a couple of mths tax. It is high mileage, now 241k, but has almost full service history. I've done approx 20k in it since March 2013, and hardly spent a penny on it (tyres/service items etc)  |

I think we are forgeting about the shooting out of the back as one of the requirements. So surely anything Citroen even possibly Peugeot?? would be better for the sublime ride quality offered. Remember the episode of Topgear where they were filming the horse racing out of the back of a car on the very bumpy road. That was a Citroen C6 so out of your price league unfortunately, but possibly an older model?

Unless you're doing mega-mileage, don't pay a premium for a diesel.
You mentioned an E class Benz. You mean a W210?
A six cylinder petrol will be cheap because people think they're thirsty. A four cylinder petrol would be a good shout if only because the diesels attract strong money.
Be aware: some W210s are shockers for rust, water ingress and lots of other un-Benzlike qualities.

SAAB 9-5 Aero estate.
More than economical enough for me personally. Not as economical as the diesel's mentioned, but will be cheaper to buy a very nice example and it'd take you a fair while to claw back some of the extra outlay on fuel.
Plus it's quick, good-looking, very well equipped, well-built, very spacious, interesting and a bit quirky now.

Very cheap to buy these days. This was my old 2.3 Aero HOT Great car and I sold it for £1200 last year. You can pick up shabbier examples for half that.  |

My old passat used to do 55MPG easy, plus was veg friendly too +1 for the W124 I've had my 300CE for over 3 years now and it's been good as gold. The only expenditure has been a set of brake pads and oil / filters. Picks it's heels up if you bury the loud pedal, comfortable ride and returns over 30 mpg (just) on mixed town / A road journeys I'd have another one without a doubt. |

Just to update this, I should be picking up a 59 plate Vauxhall Astra Estate with 93k, full service history, full MOT and full tax. Couple of dings and scrapes but otherwise seems in good condition and has £35 a year road tax and should get 50-60mpg.

We used to have a b5.5 w reg Passat 115 tdi sport estate and the mpg rarely dropped below 48 and lots of power and torque. Had it 5 years and put about 60k on it with no probs. Much better than the **** touran the mrs replaced it with. Bigger than an a4 inside too.

I used a e34 touring to film from before , perfect.
Double sunroof , and split folding tailgate , you can remove the glass only.
