Does anybody know if the arc/sweep of the wipers can be widened? The motor in question is the typical 14w Lucas motor as found on minis, mgbs etc but it's fitted to my Covin 911 which has a rather large screen. The wipers park on the drivers side but the passenger side only get swept up to the 1-2 o'clock position.

yeah they can, you can either fit different wheel boxes where the wipers go, or move the drive pin on gearwheel inside the motor assembly. I did the latter a few years ago for my Herald. I cut the drive pin off and welded it in a different place. took a couple of attempts to get it right though

I think you can get different gear wheels that go in the motor housing to give different arcs, I believe they have the arc in degrees written on the gear wheel. I have a spare one you can have for parts if its any different to the one you already have ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

![](http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb291/maph2/DSC_0523_zps983ce702.jpg) That's the full sweep, so probably about 100-105 degrees. Needs 170 degrees ideally.

SVC do wiper drive gears in numerous 'angles' and also wheel-boxes with two different numbers of teeth. linkFor a particular drive gear I would expect a wheel box with less teeth to move a greater angle than one with more.

Just had a look at my photos and it appears that the wheel in my wiper motor has 125 degrees written on it, but it easily clears a whole MGB GT screen so might be ok, I suppose it depends on the wheel boxes as mentioned above. But as I say if you can wait till I'm back in the midlands in January you're welcome to my old motor if it helps out at all ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Ok thanks. The max angle for new wheel drives is 130. Lotus excels had a 182 degree gear (single wiper) and apparently series 3 jags have a 170 one but the motor is a really big 29W one.

If you've currently got 40 tooth wheel boxes then each tooth of the rack will rotate the wiper arm by 9 degrees as it runs back and forth (360/40). Since you've currently got about 100 degrees of sweep then that would imply that the rack is moving to and fro by about 11 teeth.
If you were then to swap to a 32 tooth wheel box, each tooth of the rack would give 11 1/4 degrees of sweep so your same 11 teeth on the rack would move the wiper arm by 124 degrees.
If you can get the rack moving by 13 teeth by changing the drive gear to one with a 'higher' angle then that would be 146 degrees and getting somewhat closer to your ideal.
Of course if your wheelboxes are already 32 tooth then its not going to help that much.

Quick update - post 2002 land rover defenders use a 14W wiper motor with a 140 degree gear, so i've ordered one of those £16 delivered. when i pull the motor out to swap it over, i'll check the wheel boxes too.
