Right, thanks to a mate of mines inspirational idea of a black cab, I want one. Early to mid 90's Fairway, like this picture: Having read up a bit about them, they seem ideal, however... Do you reckon its worth buying from a dealer with regards to getting hold of one? Private they seem to go for £750 to £1250, dealer wise they tend to go for £1000-£2000. I would ideally want an owner-driver owned one, rather than a fleet owned one, as then it wouldnt be run literally almost 24/7, but then again, often fleets serviced the vehicles more often, so its a catch 22 situation. Everywhere I look it mentions there being a whole load of almost rotten, seriously nasty ones tarted up and being sold on the cheap... I'm quite happy doing bodywork, but structural welding isnt my cup of tea. Its got to be black. Its got to be relatively clean. I've found: www.elitelondontaxis.co.uk/sale.aspxwww.taxigarage.co.uk/sales-fairway.htm (but more expensive) www.londontaxiexports.co.uk/As places that sell them, can anyone else find any other companies selling them? Or any advice or thoughts... I'd rather drape my curse word over the exhaust of the spazda after its been running for an hour than buy a Metrocab, let me put it that way

What do you plan on doing with it? In standard guise they are depressingly slow. And the seating position for the driver is on the claustrophobic side. Just so you know in advance.

The indicaters never work and you can only double park in them, many don't go south of the river.

I was having cravings for one of these a while ago, i reckon it would be good with the roof chopped off to make it open topped, and maybe either wire wheels, or BBS/Alleycats/Compomotive style wheels, or sort of pseudo hot rod if you can make it ratty enough. Oh and sh*t loads chrome either way.

To make it clearer why I want one... here goes... I'm a postman, and we can use our own cars... now thats great, but sometimes you need a bike to make it even quicker. Now you either get a car, with a bike rack on the back, but then if you decide to walk part of the round, your bike isnt very secure. Also, I have 6-9 bags of post, so need something big to keep all those in. I had a nice Mk3 Mondeo, but in a fit of boredom sold it, and now have the need to get another replacement. My parking and indicating can be shonky at the best of times, so I figured it'd be like a duck to water

Oh and I really would rather get something interesting, than a bloody 406 diesel or the like. Other possibilities are: T25 van/crewcab. BMW E30 touring.

Get one of the older cabs that don't even have a passenger door - makes it easier to leap out and deliver the mail!

years ago I was a pushbike courier in london. I have been slammed enough times into one of these to be able to tell you that you probably can't get another car with as a small truning circle as these. The effing things could do a U-turn in one of those narrow ally ways in temple.... might just be the ticket for postman pat job..
but if you want space/economy/comfort get a xantia estate. you can fit about 6 coffins in the back of one of those and you still got the magic carpet ride.

Xantia estate would probably be: Cheaper Comfier Faster More Economical More reliable etc But.... they are just minor issues

we are a cabbing family, me dad has only just retired from running his own company.
any second hand cab is gonna be well well well used if a cabby don't want it any more, they are slow, uncomfortable, bits are dear and they are rubbish for long journeys, also old ones don't crash well.
they're great if you want to stop start all roound a city centre all day but i wouldnt try and use one for anythinf else unless your a masochist.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

What about one of the LWB, poshly-trimmed Tickford versions they did? I’d guess they’re scarce and still pricy?

It might be worth phoning up LTI in Coventry (or Carbodies as they were called when I went to see them), they used to take in some old taxis when owners bought new ones. They might be able to tell you weak spots. They'll have about a million miles on them (no exageration, genuinely 1,000,000 is about right before they get retired. Routemaster buses used to do 10,000,000 miles ) all parts are available but not necessarily cheap. They're not that comfortable to drive and the seat doesn't adjust much. Having said that, it sounds ideal for what you want. There's one around my office in Kensington that's used for dog walking. The owner drives around in the taxi collecting all the dogs (loads of room in the back) and then takes them to the park for a walk, then drives them back in the cab.

Average for the Fairway that I'm looking at seems to be around 300k, which is barely run in.
Going to go look at a dealers stock later this week, hate buying cars from a dealer, but with something like this it might be a good idea
