One of these for < 2K you get RWD and the Alfa V6 in 3.0L Format.. a car that likes to go sideways and has a "u" shaped handbrake thrown in for free.

I'm going to put in another vote for a Triumph 2000 or 2500, great looking cars. Either that or a Mk1 Golf GTi

Mk2 Granada 2.8is with the recaros and a manual box plus my genuine RS front spoiler I've still got somewhere!! I had a 2.8 gl about 10 years ago and loved it, always wished It had a manual box and injection and have always vowed ever since to get another!! Although there is a very nice looking Sierra with a manual box and COSWORTH 24v lump fitted on eBay at the moment, that would be tempting if I had £2k in my pocket..... Luckily I haven't!! But then I've always fancied an Alfa 90 v6 too... That odd handbrake and window switches in a overhead console have always got my attention!!

Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

Not sure if it's retro enough but I'd go for a black, sporty XJ. Quick, plush and looks great This one would still leave you with £500 in your wallet for repairs and fuel
