Well, that was a fail! The dreaded Mall of Asia reopened this weekend so that was the next plan after the Robinson Mall unavailability, what with Ace being on the ground floor, there was a chance. Saturday, for various reasons was dubbed International Beer Drinking Day, so that was out. Sunday morning, I checked Google and someone had kindly put up some pictures from the day before... You will notice that there are plenty of people. You will also notice that most are stationary, and not just because it's a still photograph! Did I wish to spend my Sunday, Father's Day no less, standing in socially distancing queues up MoA, surrounded by hordes of people making up for three months retailing deprivation? Hmm, let me think about it for a second. So I opted to stay at home and be spoilt by the presentation of a large chocolate cake, which I don't eat, but that funnily, the girls and Madam love! Next weekend?

So, this morning, I was up with the lark, or would be if we had any here, and decided today was the day. Yes, I'd gird my loins, summon the Dunkirk spirit and head off to the now completely reopened Robinson Mall in lovely downtown Malate. My first trip of any retailing type since the March 17 lockdown. As I backed the '38 out of the garage, at that very moment, the heavens opened and a deluge fell from the sky. By the time I'd closed the garage doors, I was sodden. A sign? A portent? Drove through zero visibility and rapidly flooding roads (Robinson is only 15 minutes away, gives an idea of the amount of water falling) and arrived just after opening at 10am. As I climbed to my usual 5th floor parking zone, I did notice I was pretty much alone, with just the odd vehicle dotted here and there. Entering the mall, it was like a tomb. Got my temperature taken and hands sprayed by security and headed off. Got to admit that Ace Hardware has a bewildering range of paints. Mainly bewildering because they are all jumbled up, colours, paint types all wildly scattered around the shelves. No rhyme or reason. Anyway, I hunted high and low, literally, scouring every shelf front to back for a tin of satin black. Could I find one? Could I hellers like! Eventually, slowly being beaten into submission and overcome with failure, I espied a tin of what describes itself as, "Dark Metallic Green." In desperation, I grabbed it, stood in a queue of one for five minutes whilst the cashier finished doing whatever cashiers do, and powerboated my way home. The rain stopped the second I closed the garage doors again. Does it match? Haven't got a bleedin' clue. Realising the trip had taken two hours, I needed beer. Still, a small step on the road to what should have been a simple job. Let's see what next weekend brings. P.S. In my desire to curtail the experience as soon as possible, I realised I'd forgotten the bloody masking tape. Did I turn around? What do you think!

I really give up with me. Just after I finished typing the above, I had a revelation and thought why, oh why, did you not just go to Lazada.com.ph in the first place and order the bloody stuff off there? So I did, and I have. Satin black and masking tape. Muppet! I'm a worry sometimes.

Ah but the girls at Ace Hardware are probably better than the ones on the intern... Actually that might not be true. Or so I've been told. I'm a married man so I don't know. Obviously. As you were.

My boss just paid me to satisfy my curiosity.. There was more women on the cover of the FHM mag seen near the start than anywhere else... What was that meant to be, a covert scope out of the hanging signage by the opposition?

Old age sneaking up on ya lol And then clouting me around the back of the head with an empty Empi bottle! Ah but the girls at Ace Hardware are probably better than the ones on the intern... Actually that might not be true. Or so I've been told. I'm a married man so I don't know. Obviously. As you were. Indubitably, James, indubitably. I'll just leave this here My boss just paid me to satisfy my curiosity.. The thing I really cannot understand is that this guy has booked his flight at great expense, packed his bags and travelled to Angeles, a city of no known cultural value of any kind. It is however, literally awash with many and varied other eastern delights, 24/7, and yet this guy chooses to pass his time videoing Ace Hardware. You do have to wonder. The only thing I brought away, is that I should have waited until the end of quarantine, driven the 90km to Angeles and selected my rattlecan from their immaculately presented selection.

Sadly, huge numbers of staff does not translate into improved customer service. Anyway, a huge update... The masking tape has arrived! Maybe even get the paint later today? Edit to add, paint's arrived. Tomorrow? Who knows.

Didn't you already receive the two things you ordered?? Wish I got mystery parcels.. Or is that just your old age kicking in, and you've made a bunch of purchases you've forgotten about?

Didn't you already receive the two things you ordered?? Wish I got mystery parcels.. Or is that just your old age kicking in, and you've made a bunch of purchases you've forgotten about? Nope, this was it. I've got some other '38 specific stuff on order, but that's not arrived yet. Unless there's something I've forgotten? Anyway, never say I don't do owt. This morning, filled with enthusiasm, it was bumper day. Yay! This is what we started with... Bolts came out without a fight. Makes life so much easier. Off and hurled into the undergrowth... Colour coded "cheeks" off the new one. Three barbed clips and off it pops... Epsom Green one fitted. Strangely, three barbed clips and its on... No pic of the fitting. Actually, it's a really simple system, two doohickeys on the bumper ends slide into a body mounted whassname, flick two spring clips over, fire in two bolts and that's it. In reality, on your own, it's a sod of a job to keep the whole thing up in the air whilst you get stuff lined up. Still... Looks a whole heap better. Just need the new light lenses to arrive now. Front? Next time. I may paint it tomorrow. Having overdone things before in this heat, I'm pretty much attuned to know when enough is enough. As a general rule of thumb, when the fag packet in the top pocket of your overalls collapses into a mushy mess, you have now leaked enough fluids. Time to restock. So a soak in the shower, half a gallon of water and now on the cold ones. Feet up time and contemplate half a job well done. Ironically, I know from experience that the front is actually easier. Although heavier and no less awkward, there's no fighting for an hour with reluctant arch liners or mudflaps after you've fitted it to contend with. So that's the worst behind me.

I need to replace my rear bumper. Sadly over here the rear bumper acts as a sacrificial anode which is why you don't see rusty P38s. Being hidden in a plastic shroud you don't notice the rear bumper metalwork crusting up so those two bolts can be a real sod to get off and second hand replacements are often just as crusty. The front came off for access surprisingly easy.

Can you not retrain bottle openers into multi-tasking bumper holders / balancers? Just asking for a friend

The front came off for access surprisingly easy. I can do you a super deal on the metal carcass. Completely rust free and unmolested. Not too sure about my wrapping skills though. To be fair, I've not come across a single rusted nut, bolt or screw on this thing. Everything just pops undone when asked. Wish my Land Rovers in the UK had been as accommodating! Can you not retrain bottle openers into multi-tasking bumper holders / balancers? Just asking for a friend Believe me, the thought crossed my mind. Problem is that I like to get things done in the morning when it's "cooler". They, on the other hand fall asleep about the same time, having Netflix-ed all night. So I decided that, on balance, it was less arduous to just get on with it. To be completely fair though, they've just given me a superb massage, I hardly hurt at all now. So, swings and roundabouts.

Well, it's all in one colour at least... This has taught me several things:- 1) Don't try to paint in the breeze. A tad difficult when, every time I went near the thing, a gentle zephyr would spring up; 2) I should leave painting stuff to the like of thems what know what they're doing, and; 3) I should have done the back one as well. Maybe one day. 4) There is a scope. It will creep! The PO had a bull-bar fitted and the brackets were still attached. On removal, it quickly became obvious that the top would need painting as well. And those little scuff marks on the sides, and...see 3), above. Still, as I say, it's all the same colour at least. I'll give a quick coat of looking at next Saturday then get it fitted up. As a bonus, it came complete with the spotlights which, upon examination, are in better nick than mine and have obviously not been sitting full of water at some time in their lives, so that's a win. I'll just swap the Nightbreakers over and get them on as well.

Very nice!
I must admit I don't know how anyone gets anything done in tropical countries. It's high 20s here and I'm melting (and I've got a higher heat tolerance than most). Uninsulated tin-top garage probably doesn't help, but still it's not mid-30s and silly high humidity.

Thank you. That's the most flattering picture! I must admit I don't know how anyone gets anything done in tropical countries. It's high 20s here and I'm melting (and I've got a higher heat tolerance than most). Uninsulated tin-top garage probably doesn't help, but still it's not mid-30s and silly high humidity. Funny how you adjust. Before I came out to Asia I'd done two Copenhagen winters, so it was a bit of a shock. In Bangkok, on my first trip to this part of the world, the hotel was less than a km from the office but by the time I'd walked there, even at 6am, I was dripping wet through. Going home wasn't too bad as there was a little bar around the midway point. But you weren't at your most fragrant! Anyway, it was there I taught myself, "The Bangkok Bimble," which involved, as you may imagine, walking very slowly, like you were taking a very sniffy dog for a walk! This helped but really, the only way is to just get used to it which, after sixteen or so years I am, after a fashion. Now I can wander around reasonably happily without becoming a damp rag. Of course, the real answer is to sling a hammock between two palm trees, soak up the sea breeze and have a pretty girly bring you something ice cold every now and again. Sadly, that doesn't pay the bills though. The big problem when you're doing manual type stuff, is dehydration, which can creep up on you unnoticed when you're concentrating on something. I've been bitten three or four times and it's most unpleasant. I try to avoid that now!

Yep, just slow right down and do hard work early or later in the day.
never being more than a few minutes from the ocean always helps, just head over for sea breezes. head for shade and air-con during the hotter parts of the day and keep windows, blinds etc closed until the sun goes past.
island style clothing and plenty of fluids of any description
