I remember you had some fun and games with your suspension earlier in this thread so when I came across a UK company that makes repair kits for cars ( www.x8r.co.uk) I thought of your RR; The repair kits are intended to repair your original part where the manufacturer might only sell you a full part. They seem to have repair kits for the Range Rover suspension air compressor. For my old alfa they sell swirl flap repair kits or for the Nissan Quashqai they sell a kit to repair boot handles that Nissan only sell the whole handle for |

I'll have a nose around the site. There's always something I got a compressor rebuild kit some time ago. A new one was fitted and the old one refurbished and put into stock. When I needed to repair the ABS pump, I managed to source shaft seals, etc., locally. Think it was about three quid in parts! |

Well this has been a while. Basically, I've just been using the P38 as and when. Normally for a weekend runabout, just obviously not so much recently, due to nowhere to go. She starts first time, runs up to bang on temperature and doesn't seem that bothered about her lockdown period, although even when the street was completely blocked, I've run her up regularly and taken her as far as allowed on a Sunday. Anyway, there are several things that need doing to her, so yesterday I dropped a mail to my mate Fritz, supplier of all things Land Rovery at Eurospec down Las Piñas way. So, I've got a LH front window regulator on the way, LH side rear lights for wing and tailgate and, if his mate in the US comes across, front and rear bumpers. He needs a rear for his '38 as well, so we're hoping discount for bulk! I could get new from Rimmers, but at over a grand for the pair + courier + the dreaded duty, I'll see what Fritz can come up with first. As you know, I was thinking of making a set in steel, but with work, no kit without spending, only a tiny garage with nowhere to put the '38 outside (I've got to get the Jeepney driver next door to shift his vehicle just to get out), it's not going to happen any time soon and I'm sick of looking at the cracked items currently on it. So let's see what he can come up with. In addition, I've mailed a Land Rover dealer in Stoke on Trent about getting a new valet key cut from the VIN. Stoke, because that's where my son lives at the moment, so I can leave P&P to him. The old one will happily lock the vehicle and operate the ignition, it just won't unlock it again! You can see it's also pretty worn and been getting more fiddly over time. LR Manila continue to maintain that the P38 VIN numbers don't exist (not just my experience) so that's a waste of time.  If it turns out not to be the key, Fritz has a spare door lock I can have, and it's a five minute swap, so not much lost. May get it anyway as a stopgap, then I'm covered both ways. I'm really hoping to get off my current project this year, although COVID kinda messed up with our plans there. But if so, the '38 will be pressed back into more frequent use, so we may as well have her fully prettied up again. Talking of which,  One of the neighbours has acquired (I hesitate to say, 'bought') a machine polisher and was looking for something to practice on. "Fill yer boots," I told him. So he did, and a pretty damn good job he made of it as well. I'm particularly pleased with the way the bonnet came up. It was covered in scratches after our short and enforced stay in Tondo a while back, where the local children delighted in bouncing basketballs off it and writing their names in the dust. A huge improvement and not bad for a tenner!  |

Funny, old world, ain't it?  Got a mail from Fritz this morning, telling me that the regulator and lenses would be with me soon. He also informed me that the guy selling a lock had assured him it "100% worked." Great. What he also told my man was that it had 100% no key. Priceless! In the meantime, around an hour ago, I got an SMS from another pal, saying Fritz had mentioned I was looking for bumpers. He thought he knew someone with a pair for sale. "Go for it!" I told him. Five minutes later, I was in possession of pictures and a price of PHP25,000 (400 quid-ish) for both. Sooo, and I'm guessing here (because nobody can calculate duty with any type of accuracy, least of all Customs), around PHP250,000 new, landed in-country from Rimmers, or 10% of that for a half hour drive. Been in touch with the guy, so I'm off down Parañaque for a meet-up tomorrow afternoon. Should it work, I'll need to sprinkle some beers around! P.S. Exchanging a few messages with people whilst writing this, I have a feeling it's the same guy that wanted PHP300,000 for the same pair a few years ago, which is probably why I didn't pursue them at the time. Some deflation if it is! |

Job done!
Hardly calls for a mention in the excellent @grumpynorthener thread about road trips and parts. It was only around 30km, but the longest trip we've done since March 17.
I say we because when I said I was going, Tania announced she wanted to come along. I wondered why, until she said on the trip, "Look Daddy George, people, cars, stuff and everything!" Then I realised she just wanted a run out from the house as much as me and it was nice to have the company.
Anyway, I arrived at the carpark behind Shopwise in Sucat, and SMS'd the guy, as arranged.
An hour later, he turned up, we exchanged pleasantries, cash and bumpers.
Came home the, "pretty way," if there is one, unloaded and parked up.
One pair of bumpers, no splits or cracks, front complete with spotlights, now residing in a little passageway off the kitchen. Note to self, warn Ate Crazy before she falls over them and causes damage!
Just got to get some paint mixed now, so I can colour match them, as per original.
Tick one (two?) off the list.
One thing I did notice, is that the little the average Filipino knew about driving before the lockdown, has now been completely forgotten in the intervening three months.
Still, to paraphrase, "I counted us out and counted us home again!" so that's a result in itself!

Having had to drive to work throughout this whole debacle, it's been interesting watching the few people on the road get slacker in their driving habits as the roads got quiet.

Stuff like one way streets, which has always been a sketchy concept here anyway, seems to have completely gone out the window. Several occasions on Sunday I found myself nose-to-nose with some halfwit, who was then forced to reverse (a sorry tale in itself) out of my way. Stopping at junctions is another. Not popular before, completely disregarded now. And don't get me started on dumping your car sorry, parking! |

Although trundling around at 06:00 tying to find an ATM that could actually deliver cash can hardly be called ragging. Still, it's the thought that counts! On another note, the workshop manual shows that the bolts holding the front bumpers are male Torx (is there a more technical term?), for which I have a bit of kit. I've had this off before. It also shows the rear as having female Torx, for which I haven't. Well, not big enough. So this morning I had a quick look. Rears are the same as the front. No problem! |

I've been staring at the broken and battered bumpers for a couple of years now and getting a bit sick of it. Having a good pair lying around where Ate Crazy can kick them around isn't helping. The issue is the colour coding on the new front bumper, I just can't fit it whilst it's still silver, but so far I've had zero success on finding anyone who will mix aerosols for me. There is one possible contact, but they're currently stuck in their home province under the current quarantine regime for who knows how long. Not being blessed with patience on this issue, I've decided to just blow them over with some black/dark grey satin for now and get 'em fitted. I can always come back to them if/when I track the right paint down. Being as it's dark green anyway and tucked away under the main bumper, it'll probably only be me that notices, and I'm telling nobody.  I think I'll take Friday off and have mooch around Ace Hardware, asking various sales assistants about useless things on the lowest shelves. I may also buy some paint and stuff as well! Plus is a good excuse to go and see if my little local Sunday lunchtime bar is open again, as promised. |

Actually no. No, I won't. Y'see all the best laid plans have a habit of running aground and this one did for two reasons:- 1) My boss, now staring a problem in the face that he's been warned about for two years, asked me to frig the simulation so he can bluster his way around it. So that was the morning gone 2) The part of the mall I need to get to is, I'm reliably informed by the Bottle Openers who were there yesterday, resolutely shut. Useless.  Still, I do have a possible backup plan, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow now. Today is early beer o'clock. |
