Hello all, Been a lurker for a while now, always been into older cars after driving a mates mk1 golf before my test. Had a polo 6n2 as a first car that I saved from the scrappers, finally got my hands on a Mk2 gti about 4 months ago as I got a scholarship. Always liked old VW's (do like other stuff though!! I hate folk that are blinkered by one make) as the friend who has the mk1 has been a pretty big influence on me. Its a 1989 digifant 8v, its a bit scruffy around the edges and has had the 90's boy racer treatment at some stage, I'm slowly working my way through the niggles and putting a few bits back to standard. However I am a student and the car is parked on the street so bigger jobs tend to wait till I go home, handily I have a friend with a workshop. The car is over 4 years older than me which I find pretty funny. Enough talk here are a few pictures; When I got it it came on some dodgy 5 spokes with perished tyres; Gave it a good clean and wax and blacked up the bumpers Got and refurbed some "mini G60's" would love some proper 15" ones but can't justify the price when my 14's cost me around £50 with tyres and paint material costs! So far I have done oil and filter, front engine mount, gear linkages, seat mount bushings, rehung exhaust, wired in a cassette player as the cd player it came with looked curse word, and last weekend I put a factory airbox back in, in place of a haggered K&N and redid all vacuum lines, cleaned out the breather system and idle recirculation valve. Running so much better now! puts a smile on my face every time I see it and feels rocket ship fast compared the the uni minibuses I have driven in the year of not having a car

I always prefered my gti's on the smaller rim as they were more 'chuckable ' myself .

Was back home the last few day so got some more done, new rear disc's pads and mk4 calipers, finished all the welding (that i know about so far) and got a fair bit of the paint work done. also fitted two new tyres and gave the 5 spokes the car came with a new lease of life, not to sure on them but they also fit my mx5 so either or gave full car a wash, was boggin with the all the dust from my garage, feels good to make a bit of progress

Sweet work, my red Golf brethren. May I ask where you found a set of baby g60s for such a small amount? And did you tint your rear lights yourself? Cheers ☺

Got a few days to go home and get some work done last week, new battery tray welded in Also found 2 other bits of rot in the floor, used to be a big gromet there which must have trapped badness in it, chopped out and welded up, only took photo of it chopped though
Took old handbrake cables out to fit new ones, turns out i got the wrong length if anyone needs some 1800mm ones (think they were used on pre 89 golfs then let me know. New timing belt and tensioner fitted, forgot to get alternator belt but easy to do later Fitted grill and lights, glad i spent ages labelling all the connectors, there are a few that have never been plugged into anything that i need to trace at some point. Painted rocker cover and fitted a new gasket as the old cork one was shot, also got the remainder of shift linkages replaced, still need to do the socket under the car but ran out of time. everything takes twice as long as i think! but that should be all welding done now and its all seam sealed and painted.

Been meaning to update this for so long! Golf is now on the road had a few hurdles along the way but so happy now. In the end redid all the brake lines as they were well past there best, new struts front and rear, disc's and pads all round with mk4 rear calliper conversion, and replaced a load of ignition stuff; HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm etc Put interior back in Then got it threw its MOT! Only issue was screen washer stopped working and front disc's were and advisory, have new ones sitting there but have a spare set of hubs and callipers I'm going to refurbish and swap over in one go Then started to have a few issues, ECU went pop, right faff but luckily happened in a place i could leave the car for a few days Got that sorted, went down to car to re fit side trims and found it like this Went into full level the world mode for a bit! Such a terrible feeling, but now i am really great full that they didn't get away with the car, lock destroyed, smashed window and all the wires pulled out of ignition. Got a window that night and new lockset, fitted a kill switch and removable steering wheel now. If Koni did window's Thankfully my friend has a driveway big enough to leave the car there for a few days for parts to arrive. All sorted now, got a Momo Prototipo wheel, its a very delayed 21st birthday present from my mother, such a sweet present, hopefully have it for many years to come After a MFA/wiper stalk if anyone has one or is breaking a gti? its CE1. Also on the hunt for the thinner side trims, they seem to have a large amount of scene tax at the minute though. Now sitting happy with my friends civic Still got rakes of little jobs (and a few big ones) to do but really happy to have it back on the road, fingers crossed that's the end of my bad luck!
