I think I drove your car back in 88/89? I used to look after the Mazda Press fleet down in Staplehurst in Kent. As you can imagine, the 4x4 turbo was a rare beast even then! I can't recall exactly why I drove yours but it might have come through Tunbridge Wells Mazda for something? I also got to drive a 240bhp Broadspeed tuned version which was an awesome little car.

In the late 90's I did drive one of these (through Tunbridge Wells) and although it was a bit of a dog by then, it still was amazing fun. I think it was an E plate and had a slighly smaller rear spoiler and slight upward bump in the bonnet if I remember correctly. Wish I'd bought it now. Lovely example you have there...would love one of these myself if I could find one

Great cars and I really fancy a minter. I think I will buy one but the timing is not right just yet. I had a few of these but the earlier shape ones. The first one came by guy that offered me a swap for my 205 GTi 1.9 in 1999 and I was hooked. Had great fun in that, silver E reg Lux with TSW Hockenheims and Scorpion exhaust. Sold it then bought another a few years later and when I had this I acquired two more that I broke for spares on my Mums drive, she wasn't happy! I always fancied the later one with TWR styling, maybe that's what I will get in the future but all I seem to find are dogs.

I don't know where this originated from but I picked it up from down in devon back in march. Before that I had a silver E plate one which I had for near on 8 years, the rot got to bad and someone rear ended me and I couldnt source a rear panel. I was still using it when this cropped up so I got hold of this and stripped the silver one for spares, as you know, spares are hard to come by for something like this. The wheels on it are from a mazda 626 turbo, the previous owner picked them up brand new from the states. A lot of people think this is the TWR but the TWR was an ealrier version, the body kit is stamped MS which is either mazdasport or mazdaspeed, nobody is really sure as its a bit of a mystery. This pic, car on the left is the earlier version whats called a pre-facelift. On the right is the later facelift, different bonnet, lights, wings etc. A list of mods that the car has had done. Whiteline control springs all round KYB struts Whiteline front strut brace Whiteline 22mil rear anti roll bar Corksport ARB drop links with poly bushes Goodridge braided brake lines all round Fidanza lightweight ally flywheel ,mx5 1.8 ACT stage 2 clutch Apexi cone filter Electronic boost controller (14psi) Boost and oil pressure gauges AEM uego wideband. FSE Fuel pressure regulator HKS turbo timer HKS ally gear knob Iiridium plugs Magnecore 8.5mil HT leads Scorpion exhaust with BBR Backbox Chipped ecu (unknown chip) Custom intercooler RX7 Fuel pump Blitz Dump valve

What a cracking little car, i'd love one of these for hillclimbing as at 1.6 turbo its perfect for A3 class. I know of a couple down this way, a white one with oz alloys and blue mirrors (fast but ragged) and a silver one with bright green stickers. I like the electronic centre diff lock function on them! There is a nice looking one on ebay at the mo. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-323-BF-4wd-Turbo-phase-one-model-/221283185066?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item33858171aaThere was also a black one the same as mine on there which got sold recently, needed a bit of work to get it on the road, think it went for around a grand. They crop up from time to time but most have been sitting and need a lot of work to get them back on the road. Id say mine is good condition bearing in mind its age, ive seen a lot worse. One of the rear arches will need doing soon and it could do with a full respray, few dings and scratches as you would expect from a car this age but nothing really that bad.

That one for sale on eBay seems a bargain. Lovely cars. First car I ever went seriously quick in. Quite rare now even here in nz where there used to be heaps of them.

Yeah more of them down under and in the states, think they got more of a restricted version tho with different intake manifold and cat. I see you had an RX3, just had a quick flick through your thread and bookmarked it to read later, always loved them motors.

The silver one I had E616 VKN came from down in sussex, had 1 lady owner for many years then her son in law got his hands on it and broke it, then I brought it off him. Top of the engine had oil starvation which resulted in the exhaust cam seizing up and the pulley snapping off the end of the cam. I brought it off him as it stood for £300 as i had spares to fix it and put a new head on it, but it still had the blockage which I quickly found out, so head off and unblocked it and all was good after then. Was in pretty good nick with 66k on the clock. Wernt till someone rear ended me and I couldnt source a replacement panel that it just got neglected. good car and served me well for near on 8 years.

Hi this is my motor. I think it might of been posted up on here by the previous owner, (probably went by the name reedler) Anyway, thought it would be worth showing that its still alive and well. Going by howmanyleft, one of three 89 models on the road of the UK at the mo. Ive been around these cars since end of the 90s and this is 323 number 5 for me and i aim to keep and maintain for many years to come. 1989 Mazda 323 1.6 4x4 Turbo, Mazdasport edition.

I put E625VKN into Google and this forum came up with a previous owner making a comment that they used to own this car. Does anyone have any history on this Mazda 323?

Didnt these have a weak crank pulley or key way where the pulley would go loose or strip the key way and then curse word up the engine due to valves hitting pistons? I was after one years ago and this was what put me off at the time, I'm sure there are fixes for it happening by now though.

You would just drill and pin with the pin axially positioned where the crank & pulley intersect

The main weakness was the gearbox. I know of two of them standing, both with gearboxes that lunched themselves. Fine if you leave engine standard and drive with a bit of mechanical sympathy
