At no point did I refer to the car in question in my post, it was more of a general question People were saying that they wouldn't buy a car that they knew the seller was making a big profit on. Which is their choice but its all a little short sighted imo. Hence my question "So some of you would miss out on a decent car at the right sort of price because the seller was making a nice profit on it?" yes a far sighted person may be able to shrug off the feeling but I couldnt... ***edit mind you if the seller had genuinely owned it for a while and cherished it an looked after it then maybe*** mind you I'm not much of a beer drinker either so you wont see me paying £3 plus for a pint down my local knowing it costs less than 30p to make. if you got money to curse word up the wall then fair play to you. its a bit better proced now he has dropped the price, I just don't want to be the mug who pays him massive profit for doing nothing with a bull sh** story..... if he had been honest it woulda been better, or if he wasnt so greedy and put it up to auction. be a mug all you want mate but ill gladly miss out and keep my eye out for another going at £200. what would I feel like buying that and then finding one for 200 weeks later. How is someone who pays market rate for a car a mug? Why does it even matter what someone else paid for a car? If someone pays 10k for a 1k car then yes you could call them a mug, but if they pay 1k for a 1k car how can they possibly be a mug? Even if the seller paid a fraction of that for it its still a 1k car. If you miss out on a decent car at a decent price due to some deluded fear that the seller is somehow making a mug of you by making a profit, I'm sorry but that makes you the mug not the person that eventually buys it you just seem bitter that someone beat you to it and is trying to turn a profit on it. At £200 you should just be happy that it didn't get put around the oval and still has a chance of finding a owner that will look after it.

sorry I probably shopuld have added "felt/feel" like a mug...
if I had taken your advice right of the bat and bought it when it was advertised at £1500 I would have most definatley felt like a mug. hes now advertised it for 995. it is now more in keep with its value, and id be tempted at that price... to be honest though id still offer him less as I know how much he paid. a bidding war ie, auction would probably push me to pay upto 900 and feel quite happy about it. so my point isnt that anything over £200 makes me a mug just giving the guy mass amounts over and to be honest over its going rate. which is anwhere between 800-2k dependandt on condition. they may be more and more sought after but generally old mazda's fluctuate massively on price.
a cars only worth what someone is willing to pay for it after all... the more you know about a car changes what yoru willing to pay for it. lets say I was selling a car you wanted worth 1k and you bought it and found a shed load of rust, if I had shown you the hidden rust before and been more honest would you still pay 1k.? or maybe try knocking me down to a middle ground.

I never gave you any advice on buying this car, it was the statement you made about not buying a car that someone was making a big profit on that I was questioning. Like I have already said this was a general question and not specifically about this particular car
if you are selling me a car that is worth 1k in the condition you say its in, but only 500 or so with rust, then its no longer a 1k car if it has rust is it? Value is always dependant on condition, although I'm not sure what that has to do with you not wanting to buy cars the seller is making a large profit on?
I'm not one for paying over the odds for a car, but I'm happy to pay a fair price even if the person has got the car for free. I would be wishing it was me that got it for free but I wouldn't begrudge the seller selling it me for the market value and I wouldn't feel hard done by paying it either if the car was worth it, you can't hold it against someone because they got lucky on a car

Heaven forbid anyone make some money out if old cars. The kind of people who do that are second in line only to murderers and child molesterers.

I bought a 2 door Ascona once for 110 quid(would have got it cheaper if I'd waited 30 secs as the top hose blew off !!), got it home for 50 quid, then sold it to someone in Ireland for 1250. Do I feel guily ?? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Shame this thread has turned into a moanfest all because someone said that on principle they wouldn't pay £1500 for a car which they could have potentially bought for £250 the day before. I concur. In the meantime, the Montrose has been removed from eBay, so I'll assume it's sold. Fin.

yeah, it was only my personal statement. i was only responding to people telling me i had the wrong opinion so i responded in saying they had the wrong opinion. so yeah just going to have to agree to disagree.
was never saying i have anytihng against anyone making money on cars, my main point was that if you know it makes it harder "for me" to hand over my money knowing it. end of.
