Hi guys,
I've been planning on buying a BMC 1100/1300 for years now (2 door that is) and I'm finally thinking about it! Trouble is the steelies they come with are rather dull! I'd always thought that the PCD was the same as the Mini, but having looked on the PCD guide on here I find it's actually the same as cars like the Farinas and stuff! This presents a problem 'cos AFAIK there are very few aftermarket wheels for such cars! What I'd like to know is, are there any (sensible) aftermarket wheels that can be easily bought for the BMC 1100/1300? Not looking for anything extravagant, maybe just minilites or slot-mags.
I also had the idea that maybe the hubs etc form a mini could be swapped, bearing in mind the similarity between the two cars! Is there any truth in that, or am I wildy off the mark?

Unfortunatley most of the cars on that list are rather more modern than an 1100/1300, so I don't think anything would really suit, and of course it would probably be impossible to go more than 13".

114.3 means the coolest J-rims ever! In the UK then MGB, Stag, Lotus and Scimitar rims are your friends!

The front drive flanges on an 1100 can be swaped for the 4" ones as fitted to Minis. The rear hubs/drums would have to be redrilled, but it's been done before so shouldn't cause to many problems

Just found out on minilite.co.uk that you can get custom made minilites....although no prices! They've got pics of a Datsun 240z and a Lotus Elan in their gallery, which I think are both 114.3??

Emailed them this morning...instant response:£85 for 13x5.5 minilites made to measure for 1100....not bad!

If I remember correctly, Wolfrace did a 5X13 wheel for the Allaggro and Maxi, and the offset should be right for the 1100/1300. By the way, that Photoshopped 1300GT on BRMs is spot-on. Someone should build it!!

I’ve seen them, funny-looking things because Maxis etc run so much offset. That might be the biggest problem with putting any sort of attractive wheel with a bit of dish/not too much offset on these.

Defo, these 1100's have a bizarre offset, the mounting face of the wheel is almost parallel with the rim's outer edge, is that 'negative offset'? Whatever it is, it'll be easy to ruin the steering and wear out lots of knuckle joints by boshing the wrong wheels on.

Its mega positive offset, its the 'big' problem with these cars.
You either need to swap suspension - hard Fit wide wheels and fit arches - not quite as hard Or go for the big wheel/no offset look which is going to leave it looking like a tractor
Otherwise its going to look wrong.... its not as easy as just buying a set of wheels for it

There is an alternative way – widen the shell by grafting in 6” lengthways through the centre of the car, then drop back over standard suspension. That’ll give room to run dished wheels under standard (from the side) looking bodywork, easy eh?...

I had a thought the other day that might be the easiest (though by no means simple) way of making a pukka looking 1100. I believe (though someone should tell me if I'm wrong as it spoils this whole plan!) that the ADO16 range has complete front and rear subframes that bolt to the body and hold all the suspension and at the front the engine and box. So how about swapping the standard ones for complete Mini subframes? The Mini track is about 4" narrower than the 1100's but this would obviously allow for some nice tucked under but reasonable width wheels. A standard 1275 Mini engine would give a car that performed the same as a normal 1300. Later minis took 13" rims too so the suspension could manage. Or you could go for a 10" roller skate look The obvious major work required would be to modify/fabricate new subframe mounts and to hook up the steering but this would probably be easier than re-engineering each separate corner to take proper wheels and tyres. What d'ya reckon?
