Hi I'm Andy I've been on the forum for a while now but I thought its time to start a thread on my car (I'm only 15 so am planning to have it finished so I can drive it when I'm 17 and I'm also on a very tight budget) but anyway heres Cyrl as its come to be known This is it as bought in January this year When i bought the car I thought it had been around the clock but judging by the machancal condition of the car and MOTs dating back to the 80s i think the mileage could be correct Initaly I just planed to weld it up and get it on the road but then i started taking bits off..... Then Then as it is now Ive taken the swing axle back suspension and the diff off to rebuild them and panted the rear half of the chassis Also started stripping down the enigne And did a mock up of the back end but it needs new vertical links It wouldn't be a triumph without rust and mines no exception but its not too bad The bulkhead and footwells are probably the worst bit and all the lower unbolt able panels have practically dissolved and so has the roof down the front edge and where it joins the body at the back This was covered up with a thin piece of steel stuck on with silicone sealant Rusty probably original rear shocks and new adjustable konis well not really new there ebay specials that have been repainted , new stickers aplyed and polybushed fitted This is the steering wheel ive been given for it don't know what it is but it suits the car well, I will have to make a boss for it Also got a set of rare Dunlop 5j wheels off an early gt6/mk4 spitfire? for £10 I have painted one gunmetal grey but the paint has reacted with the primer I used so it needs blasting and doing again The diffs been rebuild and painted and is nearly ready to go back on the chassis but I'm waiting for an 80p circlip The rear springs been rebuilt, painted and fitted with polybushes and ive got a 3/4" lowring block for the back I do quite like the idea of it looking quite ratty on the outside like this estate

Hi Andy, and Welcome!
Looks like you've got a bit of work to do, but hey, you've got two years to do it!
Nice work on the chassis and diff so far!
All the best with it!

Looks like a cracking project and a great choice for a 1st car too And at least you should know it inside and out when you have it on the road. Plus sounds like you're thinking to build it the proper way to have a rat'r, all solid and rebuilt under the skin, scruffy above.

I went to see that car when I was looking for mine! When I looked at the commission number it was GE 10025 DL making it the 25th 13/60 ever built (they started at 10000). Don't know if you'd realised Triumph's commission numbers are a bit confusing. (See here: www.vtr.org/Herald/Herald-production.shtml). I might be mistaken though, but I think I'm right. I'm glad to see this one being saved, from when I looked at the car I can see the vast amount of work you've already put in. Keep it up and you'll have a really solid car.

All looking good and its good to see more teens on here Your budget can't be too small if you're having all new bolts, Konis and poly bushes etc though I do envy you for the cheapness of Triumph parts

The front suspensions been removed and I'm collecting parts for the rebuild. However I'm struggling to find some koni front shocks. Apparently koni don't make them anymore and I'm not willing to pay the £280 that Rimmer bros are asking. Has anyone got a pair? Also has anyone any experience of putting on a 7/8 roll bar from a 1500 spitfire? Cheers Andy.

Don't fit the thicker ARB unless you're fitting a swing spring. If you're fitting different springs or dampeners take it off and see if you prefer the feel. I haven't had one on my car for years but I'm running much heavier front springs and wanted to kill the understeer. The Courier was sold with a heavier rear spring and no ARB and many say it was the best handling version of a Herald.

So time for a bit of an update, I took the engine out and the front suspension off And got the ouriggers I needed: 2x siderails 2x cross tube ends 2x front outriggers I had to get a welder to weld them on for me as I carnt weld YET! I also got the center outriggers boxed in to help with the ridgidity of the chassis and the gave it a couple of coats of fortress metal paint. I'm also midway through the suspension rebuild. I couldnt find any konis so some woodhead shocks will have to do for the time-being but i did find some triumphtune fast road front springs. triumphtune vs standard The front suspensions going back together with polybushes, new trunnions, new ball joints etc The steering racks been rebuilt and painted just waiting for some gaters and track rod ends I found another roof for sale localy so i got it. Mines got a webasto sunroof in it thats going to cost more than i payed for the car to repair and its realy rusty around the back window If anyones got any herald bits for sale around the yorkshire area i would be intrested. Cheers Andy

Nice work mate. Missed this before but nice to see you getting stuck in. There's plenty of knowledge on here of the small chassis triumphs, so anything you need to know, just ask

Looking good mate! I saw your post over on the club triumph forum and shot you a pm on there about the webasto roof. If you could get back to me that'd be great.
Louis.

Cheers for the comments guys I will certainly ask if I'm struggling with anything. Well the front suspension is finished and its a rolling chassis again! The steering rack garters and track rod ends have arived and the racks gone on with polybushes Its had new wheel bearings, freelander wheel studs and new discs. Looks alot better than it did before! I'm just looking into making the ARB links out of rose joints, has anyone on here done this? if so what joints specifically do I need? Cheers Andy

So its been awhile but not too much has been happening on Cyril school and exams have been getting in the way. I know i have already got a set of wheels for the herald but these came up and i had to have them They are 13x5 cosmics but i have only had time to get one finished, three hours of polishing and painting later I've also stripped the bulkhead down and started cutting out the rust (quite a lot of it) A body mount on the drivers side just was not there The passengers side was paper thin and fell of shortly after this photo as I can't find any affordable sections to repair this I've started making the panels from sheet steel. Next job is to get some welding gear, I have read a lot of good things about the sealey supermig 150 is it very good and is it any good for a beginner? Cheers Andy
