Havnt seen the book but its an old concept. Have looked into it before but it gets pricey unless you make comprimises which i don't like doing!!! :/

While geeking up on a potential Mini ITX system, ideas formed on how easily it could be stuffed in or used in a car/boat/caravan etc! making a Knight rider inspired project even easier. i still i big boring out comuters and no AI cars but maybe in teh future!!!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Why would you want a DVD Player in your car, or a PS2?
Same reason, plus the computer can do both of the above, and run Sat Nav, your stereo MP3 playback etc, etc....

I wouldn't want one... All I need is Radio 2, an AA roadmap and perhaps a flask of weak lemony drink to keep me happy. I can see the appeal though.

Pack it in with all this talk about computers in cars, just stop! A cig lighter and an openable window is about as advanced as anyone needs!

I was thinking of doing this in one of my "mad scientist" phases. I was gonna use an old Pentium 2 machine, stripped down to the minimum, and running a custom (and customiseable) OS i found called 98 lite to reduce boot and shutdown times to nearly zero. Small LCDs can be got cheap off ebay, as well as smaller laptop style mouse alternatives.
Then I realised that with the way I drive I was likely to ended up smashing the hard drive platters into each other, and that I was quite happy with my CD player!

An `80s motor with a commodore 64 installed would be ok, I suppose, especially if the car is in the same shade of beige as the `64s casing.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

What I think someone should do is install a Spectrum in a car with fuel injection, hooked up to the ECU so you can change the fuelling etc. Then if you take it to a trackday and want to change the fuelling, you just insert and play your "racing" cassette to load up the new settings.

Yeah, but what if instead of putting in the "racing" cassette you accidentally put in "Horace Goes Skiing"*...... could be absolute carnage.

LOL!
dealing with technology in my workplace and home place, i will openly admit that i hate/love computers!!!
I don't really want one in my car, unless its a travelling edit studio, a motorhome type of do it all home, an office for the car, or a trick knight rider style install, all of these will take a lot of effort and add some weight, so for now - i have better things to do!!!
However watch out it will happen soon with manufacturers combining more tech, i have no hard research but i reckon its bound to happen!
