Thanks very much for the reply Mr Porsche.
I have been a huge Porsche fan for as long as I can remember and unfortunately passed up on a 996 mk1 with GT3 areo earlier in the year due to concerns about RMS IMS and the huge 911 bills. The 944 is something I have never really thought about, and I don't really know why!
After having a look through this thread, reading your reply and a few things on rennlist, I am hoping to get myself a 944. The body seems to appeal to me more.
I have seen a few 944's advertised as mot failures due to rot, I am a fabricator by trade and have repaired numerous vehicles which have been failures because of such.
I would plan on buying a neglected 944, getting it up to a road worthy state and just enjoying it on the road. The engine conversion is simply a pie in the sky idea at the minute, but if it was something that was to happen it would probably be a nonporsche conversion, 1jz, b204, something modern with the potential of large figures so the car can be enjoyed a little more.

944s have a reputation for rotten sills - for some reason they are worse than the 924. If you can make the panels, then it sounds like a good plan. There have been a number of engine conversions done, but part of the joy of these cars is the balance - if you put a big chunky engine up front it might ruin that a little.

Thanks for the reply.
All the ones I have looked at have rotten sills and thankfully I have the means to fabricate complete new sills which is one hurdle overcome.
The idea on an engine swap is, like I say, just an idea at the moment, I'm sure we all have them, I put very few into effect! I remember talking with TDI south who has a F20 powered mx5, the conversion looked incredible but the builder told me it was one of the worst cars he had ever driven due to the balance of the car being thrown out the window because of the size, weight and placement of the motor. If I do go for an engine swap I am sure there will be a huge amount of research that goes into it. Hence why I will probably drive around in a standard 944 for years!

Have to agree with the balance thing. I have an '83 944 and while it's only 163bhp from the factory, the balance is what makes it special. It's an alloy block so for a start any iron block engine I would see as a backward step from a weight perspective. And there is always the Turbo engine or the S2 if you want power. Maybe the electronics, probably advanced in their day and while still perfectly adequate , are perhaps a bit old tech at this stage - so rather than going for a different engine I think a better place to start is new engine management, throttle bodies for the N/A's etc.
For the later cars weight reduction is a good place to start I think also. Who needs electric sunroofs, electric seats, electric hatch release etc....

What engine is the Carrera GT based on in the overall product line from 924 to 944? It seems too early to be based on the engine that ended up in the 944?

Yeah, the 924 Turbo, Carrera GT and GTS engines are built on the standard 2 litre engine, not the 2.5 four used in the S. These guys are running around 400bhp in their racing GTS rep! www.mittelmotor.de/contenteng/news/default.aspCheers Duncan

That colour is incredible. Riviera blue has to go down as my all time favourite car colour.

Its the same wheels that Sumpcracker is using on his BTR! All except that these looks to be splits.
I would also be keen to understand what they are as these look amazing!
