Had a stroll around a breakers yard today. There was a bloody FB in there! Apparently it was an abandoned project that had been scrapped. The 13b was sitting on the floor, next to the drivers seat. I asked the guy at the yard about the possibility of saving the shell, and his response was a quite unenthusiastic "it's a bit far gone really to do anything about it. The shell was in extremely good shape, with only some minor surface rust and a dent in the rear corner. The sills were good, the rear arches were incredibly good. Is this lost for all time? Is it even possible to recomission a car from a scrapper? ![](http://i43.tinypic.com/szg00h.jpg) ![](http://i42.tinypic.com/w00x7c.jpg)

a) will the bloke actually sell it to you?
b) has a certificate of destruction been issued on the shell?
afaik it is possible to get even 'scrapped' cars inspected by the dvla and the reg re-assigned though
go for it!

Some models had the 13B motor, as it was already in use on the RX-4 anyway. American-market Series 3 cars got the 13B as did Japan, it was only us poor cousins in the Uk who plodded on with the 12A. Still and all, it's an easy enough swap to get the n/a 13B from an EGi FC-model RX-7 to fit with minor adjustment to the mounting cradle. Or even a turbo lump from the Turbo II or the 13BT that appeared in some Japanese models of FB!
Worth a look regarding saving, if it's cheap enough. Rust is a killer, check especially the floorpan under the rear seats/around the fishplates for the trailing arms on the rear beam. Sills etc, of course. Like Hardcore says, the fuel tanks are no longer available so if it's sound you'd probably get a few quid back on that alone if you broke what's there for parts.
EDIT to say someone's been playing about with the rear lights, they've split off the louvred outer lens that should be across them. Not very relevant to anything, but I just noticed, like

There's a great little forum just for first gen RX-7s (perhaps unsurprisingly called www.rx7fb.com/ ) where most enthusiastic owners show up from time to time. Usually some breakers being parted out on there, or failing that there's a thread watching all the eBay and other secondhand activities involving FBs for anyone needing bits. It's an excellent source of part numbers and advice anyway; for example I'd never have thought it would be cheaper to buy genuine NGK plug leads via Amazon USA than it would be to get them in the UK, but I guess that's one of the vagaries of the internet age... anyway, there are a couple of parts cars on there at the moment so you may be lucky on the sunroof. As to fuel tanks, well, poor quality wobbly children's play pony farming is more common. Most that come up are pretty poor and there are no new ones left (one of the FB.com guys proudly bought the last N.O.S. one in the UK a while back!). A local fabricator made one up for his wife's FB out of alloy that was a work of art, and we're trying to prevail on him to make some more and retail them through Super 7 Autos (rotary expert down this way) but the amount of work is putting him off. Aside from that minor miracle coming to pass, your only hope is to find one with pinholes rather than gaping rents and get it refurbished before it's too late ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) Probably not the answer you'd like, but...

Check if the mounts for the rear suspension links aren't rotten through.
You could always turn it into a race/trackday car.

I'm all for every FB being saved, they're great cars. But at the same time it does strike me that any FB without an MOT is pretty much only worth scrap value anyway, and they pop up for sale fairly regularly, pulled out of some blokes garage after a 10 year lay up and straight on to eBay. My FB was under £300 off ebay and ran and drove, obviously needed work but yeah probably a better bet to find something like that ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) As Lucky mentioned if you've any interest in owning an FB then head over to rx7fb.com, those guys know everything about FBs in the Uk that's worth knowing ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Yeah, I live and work in Leam ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) That yard was great - not so cheap but had a few gems in there. Had a few 80's cars in there that I didn't expect. The FB would have to be saved as a roadworthy project, if they ever let me buy it. I'm going back tomorrow morning, so i'll investigate a bit more then. It wouldn't stay rotary though......

Getting a car out of scrapyard can be done my DAF is proof of that it was pulled from a scrap yard in Swansea about 7 years ago. I know several of the regular cars seen on the DOC forum have been pulled out of scrapyards as well so don't give up on it.

Chap at the yard said speak to his boss on a weekday, but chances are they'll let it go for me. I had a second look and it has no fuel tank, the engine is a 12a and is full of water, and the sunroof panel is a bit rusty around the floor.
Going to call on Monday and see if they'll give me a price.
