hey guys
iv been looking into lowering my everyday motor....a 2001 Renault scenic, been looking at springs on fleabay and I think 40mm would be spot on, but if I fit the springs to my standard struts isn't the damper going to have 40mm extra travel...and in theory the spring could come out of the cup
friend of mine said that the springs are progressive and are actually the same length as standard and will drop down
anyone have any experience of these things??
thanks

As long as the free length of the spring is longer than the damper at full extension there shouldn't be a problem. I've dropped two of my cars 30-40mm on standard struts without any issues.

just don't like the idea of the spring coming loose if I go over a hump or when I jack it up or whatever

just don't like the idea of the spring coming loose if I go over a hump or when I jack it up or whatever I seriously doubt you would have any issues with the spring coming out when trying to re-enact the Dukes of Hazard I would be more concerned with the suspension alignment and tracking to be honest, if anything I prefer lowering springs as they're easier to refit If you really need to, jack it up and measure the extended length of the springs and ask the seller what the free length is.

Ive got -2" springs on the front of he capri which are a lot shorter than standard. No problems when its down on its wheels/driving: To stop them fallibg out when its jacked up they are just cable tied to the spring seats

I can understand on everyday driving that the weight of the car keeps the springs in the mounts.....I'm just thinking about the 1 odd time where the suspension is on full stretch while going over a hump or anything

Have you ever removed or installed a set of springs? On most cars the stock ones need compressing a good 4 inches before you can get the damper nut back on. They also need compressing if you remove them as intended using spring compressors. Virtually all lowering springs need a bit of compressing before you can assemble the strut, otherwise they wouldn't get their tüv certification.
The problem you think of only arises when you cut springs, or use springs meant for other applications. It can be adressed by shorter dampers (either diy or aftermarket) dropstops, or by securing the springs by different means.
