I find my naked womeon on the internet. They do things there they can't do in print. Well, not in this country anyway.
Last issue of Max Power I saw was the one with Frosty's Victor and the only slappers in that were the ones in the phone line ads in the back really. And you can't seem to get away from them anywhere these days.

i heard they were re-launching the mag, really weird because i thought that the halfords car scene was more alive than ever. Sounds like they've had some good features in there, but due to the huge stigma attatched to the magazine i just couldnt buy it in public view, if they do a mail order then i might be tempted to try to read it, the last copy i saw was a few years back with a truly rank looking gold tvr in it. Left a very bad taste in my mouth, adverts took up more than the content IMO.
A PR type bloke here knows the editor (apparently everyone does anyway) and said he was very interested in getting my moggy in it, but i just denied it on principle. Maybe after a read of the "new look" laxi pants (as my dad calls it), i might be persuaded but i don't see the point when there are some perfectly decent mags covering the same stuff by the sounds of it:
* custom car for rods * volksworld for bugs * old school rods for ratty nasty yanks * pvw for euro look retro
i guess there is a gap for the retro style cars after retro cars went baps up, a mag i never really got into that much, stopped buying after issue 3 or so when it became apparent that every other car was a mk1 / 2 escort with a pinto on webers. then again, the last copy of volksworld was a cal look special...... zzzzzzzZZZZzzzzzzzz........ I'm getting onto a bit of a rant now, i shall stop.
Someone post me a new look maxi pants the thought of walking up to the checkout in smiths with it in hand is giving me shudders.
Thats my twopenneth anyways. :-)

I didn't think i'd ever buy and read it. it is interesting at the mo though, a good diverse set of styles and machines.
They have re written the mag completely, yes its still aimed at a younger reader and its still trying to be rebellious a little bit but its written by a big brother (not cctv, older family member type of thing) kind of viewpoint the way i see it. There is hope for this mag, whether i'll subscribe or buy regularly i dunno yet depends what fruits are in the mag month by month. Its well laid out, the articales are readable and intersting, down to earth educational, photography is ace, most cars seem to be quality this far, just slightly preechy.
Gets my vote so far. i'd be interested to see whos buying it though once the dust settles, will the young lads go for it or find their tats, boy banter, and plastic elsewhere???

interesting you say i wonder whos going to buy it, because i reckon they may have shot themselves in the foot with the new change, the old laxy power brigade will just move over and buy fast car and redline (if they're still going?), max power have effectively just given away their readership to the other mags!! meanwhile the classic / retro people who are buying it for novelty value will soon realise its not that great and itll go under. Personally the thing i found most annoying about it was the tits and all over it, if i want to get porn i go on the internet for free scud, when i buy a car mag, i want CARS!!!! not some bird called tracey from slough going on about how she really likes it when blokes masturbate over her and how she takes it up the tradesmans every day. I'm still in shock they're running a rusty / rat cars feature. wtf is the world coming to eh, if someone said that to me a few years ago, id have probably blown a funny fuse, and shat my self symultaneously sp.

I'd reccommend people to have a look at least, specially if you don't mind new cars too. Redline I quite like too but still seems a little bit 'ladish' for me, would buy regular if i could though. Fast Car is ok just to see what the boy racers are upto. reckon new blood may buy it tbh, young guys (and gals) interested in modding a car, plus these mags appeal to people who do not have modded cars too, just lads (and lasses) wanting a change from The Sun, or FHM/Nuts etc. be interesting to see how it goes...

I suspect that many of the young kids will find their "tats, boy banter and plastic" in the remaining Hellfrauds modding mags.
I have no idea at all if the UK is anything like the US but I know that we do tend to follow a lot of the US trends in society. Well, maybe a year ago, maybe even 2 years back I was reading an article about how "ricers" were dying out over there after being a hugely expanding scene. Main reason being that many people were "into it" for the fashionability not because they were really into cars and many people who were into cars found that there was too much bias around overstyling and that many of the products claiming power increase etc etc just didn't do what it said on the tin. So now older, wiser these guys were either getting into "proper" performance tuning of the same sorts of import cars, or were moving into the lowrider/"pimp my ride" kind of scene or were picking up on muscle cars/hot rod scene.
There was a very interesting piece written by a guy from Matel, who make Hot Wheels, saying a few years ago their hottest sellers were Civics and Supras and the like in 2F2F logos and whatever, now they can hardly sell that sort of stuff and the hot sellers are muscle cars, lowriders, hot rods, etc. A quick look in a Nottingham toyshop confirmed to me that this is the case over here too! Loads of radio control cadillac eldorados and Oldsmobile Cutlasses with huge wheels etc. in almsot every scale you can think of.
Back to the US, they drescribed how many "import 2nr" mags had been forced to close or diversify into music/fashion titles. However the number of titles for rods and muscle cars was increasing and many opf the traditional mastheads were seeing sales increase to theui "glory days" levels.
They had even got a couple of wheel manufacturers saying how they'd had to massivley scale back production of "metric" and 4 lub wheels for imports to allow them to concentrate on making traditional fitment rims for rods, customs, muscle cars, etc. - especially in larger rim sizes.
The view in this article was that the import thing had peaked in the US and was contracting. I suspect we are seeing something like that here. People taking on more diverse interests and realising that blowing £40K on mods on a Saxo 1.2 is a pointless endeavour...

good news for me then! value of my cars up, and also price of parts down. Ahhhh life is good.
Me and my housemates are probably responsible for the hotwheels car buying trend, we went to tescos last week. ahem.
really though, i welcome all this interest in the "dark side", although it is much like when your favourite band suddenly goes mainstream and everyone likes them, its a common interest.
At almost every bedford cruise ive been to there has been a few halfords type lads come over and ask me what car it is, what engine etc, they normally hit the roof, love the interior etc.. I have all the time in the world to talk to these guys about my cars, but unfortunately the first thing that pops into my mind when i think of a max power reader is a rude little bastad with no manners that is just mouthy. It's a stereotype that ive really gotta stomp out because from my recent experiences, they aint all that bad.
oh god, ive turned into a panty waist. I'm gunna have to annhilate a few saxos now at the lights to make myself feel better.

I know what you mean. I try avoid the 'erberts at all costs. Used to people just taking the pee of being obnoxious or thinking they are funny. More recently I got some lads asking "is this a Muscle car then" - "whats the engine" - "where do you buy a car like this from" and the like rather than the usual garbage.

you can tell if they are vermin by the first question usually, the age old classic on my beetle
"is that a supercharger?"
me- "no, thats my dynamo"
"is it a porsche engine"
me-"yes actually"
"ahhh sick, i heard bout dem in beetles innit, how fast it go?"
me-"about 180"
"whaaaaaa, sick"
the guy was looking at a stock beetle engine ffs!!!!!! you can clearly count the wires on the dizzy as 4 going to plugs, i gave up in the end, he got really gobby after that, probly cos he realised i was taking the curse word outta him. But really, how does a dynamo look like a supercharger???

But really, how does a dynamo look like a supercharger??? i can see how the confusion could occur if you were a muppet with -89% of a clue about cars. imagine this with the pulleys on and a judson the clueless could also mistake an air con compressor or a power steering pump for a 'charger.

to be fair that Civic its tidy and low and has nice wheels on it. I'm not a great fan of Civics etc (I still say Honduh LOL) but its a whole heap better than the shee-at they have featured in the past. There are some quite astonishingly quick FWD pocket rockets out there now. Some with a kind of reverse-prostreet look to them, I can;t wait for the lads to start apeing that with street cars!
Not seen this months issue yet TBH.

better example, theres a really nice green 206 on there aswell, for £4 or whatever it costs id rather not just for one or two articles on decent cars when i can spend the equivelant amount on a dedicated mag. end of the day, its still a civic, lowness and nice wheels aside, lmao. theres +2 cool points, -10 for fwd and -10 again for being a civic, honda havent made a decent car since... erm, help me out here. crx thats the one, they're alright if given the same treatment, bit of a ghandi wagon though round these parts...

I don't think Max Power can be slated for not being cover-to-cover retros, as I don't think that's the direction they want to move in. That Civic I reckon is a perfect example of what they want to feature now: New-ish, slammed, cleaned, choice rims, no ridiculous Meccano sets on the back... and check that negative camber! OK so the Supra is a little bit old Max Power, but hey ho.
Just a thought - the lowrider scene is full of hot girls in bikinis, but nobody seems to mind that. Maybe it's the flesh:content ratio that's different in the lowrider mags...

Put it like this, there's a 3/4 page article on Missy Elliott titled "the first lady of modifying"......maybe "the first oversize overrated female with the worst taste of an able sighted human in the queue for seconds at McDonalds ever" would have been more appropriate. For the photo shoot this woman is wearing a furry tracksuit and a baseball cap.Niiiiiiiice At least all the descriptions of modifications are right and bag up to date.....................(as if)

lmao @ missy elliott. oh dear oh dear oh dear.
I fold.
obviously they wont feature cover to cover retros, that'd be asking too much. with the above post I don't think there can be any escaping, they're trying to maximise buying figures with featuring a bit of EVERYTHING, which as we know, is a doomed format because you'll get people like me slating it for not having enough <insert car stle here> in it.
I think that was what got retro car in the end.
remember quarantine in the back of custom car? that lasted all of 6 months or so, just dedicating one page to another type of car and boom! headshot! the reader base went apesh1t! lol.
so in summary
Max Power + New Look = wibblepoo?
I'm going to go buy it tommorrow, if there are more than 3 veilside kits I'm burning the bounder
