So I bit the bullet and picked up Issue 2 of this new look Max Power... The Good DONKS!! Woot! Reasonable product reviews and guides Honda NSX "new" modifying guide is a nice idea Sub £1000 classic hot hatches Whats legal in mods feature is v.good The Bad "new" modifying guide is a little familiar in places Euro look in the modifying guide features a bad boy bonnet!! The insistence again this issue that VIP was perfected in America (it was in fact watered down in America) Presenting themselves as being at the forefront of the "new" modifying scene, when in fact they are desperately trying to catch up A "feature" on a "Max power babe",.. Why? Hundreds of adverts for dodgy phone lines and mobile wibblepoo... so 5 out of 10 ,.. has ability doesn't use it......

Just out of curiosity, what if Lax Powah were to suddenly hit the nail on the head regarding the current modifying "scene"? Would the magazine reach a new, wider audience (perhaps even us), or would the "scene" move on to new places/ideas in order to distance themselves from the new max power crowd? Can Max Power ever be relevent to the "retro" scene?

^ That's a good question! If 'our' style suddenly became the norm, what would we do?
My vote is for Boso style! ;D

Noticed in the garage yesterday that Max Power cover was totally devoid of breasts and/or any comments relating to naked women. I was almost tempted to pick up an issue, but I reckoned it was all a con. On a side note - I cant find Practical Performance car anywhere

Did the scene only exist because Retro Cars magazine started?? The answer is no to both of those. It might compartmentalise a bit if lots of new people started flooding the scene,.. a bit like the VW scene has...

I'm not suggesting that the coverage a certain "scene" gains has anything to do with whether it will survive or not, because I agree, the "retro" scene will continue without Retro Cars. More that increased mainstream attention might change the views of those who are currently in the retro scene, as the ideas that they believed set them apart from more usual modifying paths (like the max power stylee), become "the norm" for the budding modifier(sp?). And everyone wants to feel like they are doing something a bit different don't they?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I think i'd be interested to read the Donks feature, the classic hot hatches feature and the legal side of modding feature. That all appeals to me.
Trouble is, with the new Max Power covering all aspects of the modified car scene, it leaves us retro modifiers open to bieng associated with the Max Power name and all the connotations it still has with the general public. A retro car on the cover of the magazine is something i'm quite fearful of..... it's taken a long time for borderline retro cars, for example the mk3 Escort, to shake that 'boy racer' image and be appreciated as a classic or enthusiasts car. Your average Joe Pleb seeing a modified retro on the cover of a magazine still associated with morons spazzing around McDonalds with trays under their wheels just regresses 'our' scene back to a place we've been working quite hard to distance ourselves from.

Max Power covering the "retro scene" good or bad? Both. A bunch of lads whos mechanical expertise extends to installing LED washer jets on a Saxo will be out looking for a chill new ride in a retro vibe and unable to do the work themselves. Excellent oportunity to sell on your old retro to "new blood" buyers and free up cash and space to get on with the nextg one. You might even make back what you spent on it if the buyer is keen enough! Less of those savable classics/retros should end up scrapped/broken/bangered as demand for them grows. However, prices of cars will rise, "scene tax" on rides and parts. You will also find a certain change in atmosphere as gold toothed sport-casual wearing lads start rolling up with their "bee-atches" to events and the like in their Max-retro rides. As has been said, the more people become nvolved in a scene the more it splits into factions. Look at the rodders for what we will be in 5 or 10 years time...

I avoid "max p" like the plague, 400 pages of badly modded cars owned by chav muppets and a billion adverts for "rapid relief"!! Thus the "All New" .. they've relaunched it ,.. without the sort of motors you usually associate with it,.. I'm not 100% convinced by it yet,... but people like Jonny are supplying some really interesting articles for it...

One of the first things they can do is get rid of the half naked women. If i want to look at naked women i will buy my mags from the top shelf not from the auto section. Half naked women everywhere puts me off the Autosport show aswell.
The trouble with Max Power now is its image. I cant see me going into Smiths and buying it yet. I will have a look at it next time. (if no ones looking)
