The trouble with search engines is that you can often find yourself perusing the forum or forums of whatever one-make owners' club exists for your intended purchase.... As a case in point, go have a look at some of the Land Rover forums, anyone would think that they were the only company that ever made four-wheel-drives, most of the forums are full of rivet-counters, brown trousers and sycophants who think that the entire universe revolves around Solihull. I agree with briandamaged!

I think the thing is to post up what is inspiring you to get a volvo, land rover, whatever ,.. before saying Tell me about .... as a blank statement...
For example if you look at the Volvo Amazon thread, you could be inspired to get an Amazon from there,.. so you'd go on there and pick out the pictures that are inspiring you ... and Title a thread "Cool Amazons" or something like that and write "Check out these cool amazons: (Insert Pictures) What do I need to know if I wanted to buy one" or similar...
Rather than jsut demand to be told about them

I agree with that. 'What should i look for' i think is far better and gives everyone else a better idea of how to reply to it. The one that bugs me is the 'Show me' threads, surely you've seen what ever car it is before otherwise you would be asking about them. I can see why people get advice on here, but i just hope that no one would do a car in a style that others on here recommend just so they fit in and to get a pat on the back. Basicly people have to give aswell as take.
Most of the problem is simply that we have seen alot on here over the years and its hard to find stuff thats new and interesting to people. Or atleast its harder! I cant find pics of cool cars that we havent found before so i tend to just pshop ones insted.

Maybe its time we all build some nice fresh cars that haven't been seen before. I cant help thinking that with the 'Tell me about' threads, the person is really asking 'is this car retro enough'

Lifted from the NSRA forum...... How many forum members does it takes to change a light bulb? 1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs 1 to move it to the Lighting section 2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section 7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs 5 to flame the spell checkers 3 to correct spelling/grammar flames 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp" 15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct 19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum 11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum 36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty 7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs 4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's 3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group 13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too" 5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?" 13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs" 1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Like V8's and speed? 1149.ca/Races/2006/video.htm

But RR doesn't work like other forums,.. thats why its RR... Also the whole "tell me about" thing should disappear when we have a wiki,.. so people might have "Wiki requests" but they will be in their own bit,... Just got to get to that point

It used to be that you'd find some pictures of some cool Volvo 240s and stick them up and say "I'm thinking about doing this" or "thinking about getting one" ,.. "What do you lot think"?? And you'd get some more ideas of what you could do with one, along with a bunch of info about them... Totally . . . When I first posted it was " I have a Marina - engine option... V8 / Rover K series / Metro Turbo ??" The first reply from Eddie RatDAT was - why don't you try a 2ltrTurbo from a celica - why not use the whole running gear from a sylvia... ideas I would NEVER have thought of... That's what I love.

As a relative newcomer (can I say that with over 1000 posts already?) I really enjoy the "tell me/show me" threads. There's a wealth of info here which is very interesting. Agree that perhaps a dedicated area is needed to archive older ones so the same requests don't keep coming in but finding out about cars I've never thought about is great!
The time of year is probably a player also though. With shows quiet and the weather shyte, what better to do than ask some friendly folk to raid their picture libraries for some cool shots?
As the year progresses, I think you'll find that people will be doing more work on their cars, there will be more to report from shows and tell me/show me topics will diminish. Perhaps sometimes people post these topics just out of a mixture of boredom and curiosity. Granted, the place would be pretty dull if this was all we did but there is such a wonderful mix of characters and rebuild projects here that it'll never get dull.
But as mentioned, Google doesn't help sometimes. I tried to find info on my 1987 Audi 100 when I had it and was gutted to find sweet FA. Sad I sold it before finding this place!

love tell me threads, if its interesting i'll look, and generally lots of replies are there already. i'll be doing a 'show/tell me' thread for my next couple of cars, simply becasue i know people on here are 1) friendly 2) encouraging 3) knowledgeable 4) well experienced in lots of things never mind just cars and 5) in-line with my modifying thoughts. i've never built a car to fit in. it just happens everyone here has the same awesome taste!

FAT BOY + COOKIE SHOP = RR
I have only been here a short while guys, and I have to say this is my Drug for every day x3 or more ..... I come here whenever I can. My favourites are the General board, with the e-bay thread, and all other general threads, then For sale, and Readers Rides.
I come here like a fat boy in a cookie shop, not knowing where to go first......
As mentioned before , I have "new" car to do daily duties, but have learned so much here (cue: Sapporo, B310, Moggies, Z-Cars etc) and the more I see the more I want, I can see that in the end it will be almost like pinning a tail on a donkey, I will just buy a car, I do not have massive loyalties, like one would for Football clubs and the likes.... a 1.0liter POLO Coupe in primer to me gets as much respect as a Sapporo with 50k miles.... defo at different places on the spectrum, but all have appeal.
I do like the Tell and Show threads and have used some as well, as there are many cars here in the UK that I never even knew existed till I came here 4 1/2 years ago to work. Many of the posters (post whores and hermits) have a vast understanding and insight into these cars. As mentioned above as well, guys like Rad Dat and many others have a different perspective and view of the possibilities with one car..... look at Adaptormans VW Beetle Volvo or his Cossie/Omega powered Split bus. Many guys here have amazing vision and I think in some cases , like the Amazing PotatoChops we see, they may not be able to build it themselves, but by sharing their vision, they could see another worshipper at the altar of automotive power , build their dream, or help someone on in the right direction.
I think many of the points above from all the points of view hold a lot of truth, and maybe more sharing is a good thing that we need to encourage.
Right now, if RR were to have an outtage..... and stop functioning, many of us would be very much poorer for it.
Bloody heck..... I do talk a lot ;D

Nobody HAS to do anything..... You can carry on asking the same questions in the same way and they will probably get answered Its whether you individually care about the collective quality of the content on here because we are all responsible for that ;D This wasnt intended as a dig at anyone more a collective "Lets just think about what we ask and more importantly how we ask it" Can we ask it in a way that enriches the content, as thats what has changed The knowledge will remain here if it is suitably interested in the content, if the same sort and style of questions get asked all the time then that knowledge is going to drift elsewhere.... If you ask the question after posting up some cool pics then the knowledge is going to explore those links and pics as well and remember they came from R-R and stick around ;D I don't know how better to explain it Just try it and see what happens ;D Its the way it used to be and that attracted all of us here because it was different to other forums, lets try and keep it that way by avoiding the traits that make the rest of them the same ;D Look at what has been posted up today, the quality of the cars and posts and links..... How much better is that...... if you prefer it to what else has been posted the last few weeks, or any of it had made you go "ooooof" then explore the links for yourselves and find some other stuff and come back and tell everyone about it. All it takes is a bit of effort like Hotwire and Stuizz have done this morning....... If it hasnt moved you or inspired you then carry on with the "Tell me about E36`s" or the like ;D

Can I point out as well that I started 5 threads in a 15 minute period (or there abouts),. and I hadn't got those cars squirreled away in my own private stash,.. I just went out and did a quick browse around.. It doesn't take much effort... If a handful of people did that a couple of days a week,.. well that would be nice ,... eventually you can run out of new stuff to look at ,.. so you have to let it lay for a while... but then show season soon

Hotwire - I think the problem for me is that I dip into the internet on a regular basis. I haven't got time to go Googling around - mainly because this site is responsible for a huge chunk of anytime I do spend on line! I've never encountered a forum like this one and I love it!
I do see where Dom is coming from though and I'll endeavour to bring something new to the forum in future.

I just post whatever I'm looking at, be it from eBay or hotrod/drag videos I've found....I like 'em, and will let you guys be your own judges as to wether they float your individual or collective boats.
It's like The Scrote....I'll do it the way I want, and while I'll happily post pics of what I've done to it (when I've done it!), I couldn't care less who likes or hates it, it's mine! (I mean that in a nice way).
I'm just looking forward to great summer out there doing it instead of watching the rain and pontificating...I can't wait, you guys have made an old man very happy (or something) :-)
