Not sure where I am going with this as I write, but bear with me..... Not been on for a few days and when I do the front page has 5 "Tell me about" threads...... Now it always used to seem that people came on here and were inspired, they then went out and found other cool cars and bought the pictures back here to discuss...... This is what attracted me here in the first place that whole be inspired and then go out and find more stuff to bring back and hopefully inspire others That to me was a big part of the Retro-Rides.com ethos I feel, that maybe this has changed round to people asking for the inpiration, rather than finding it here naturally.... This becomes self perpetuating eventually......... with similar stuff going round and round Now I have thought about it....I really miss the way it was I want to be inspired and to inspire......... not have to ask for it I have been introduced to some amazing vehicles through retro rides and not one of them has come through a "Tell me about" thread, some amazing modifying scenes and had my opinions changed on a variety of vehicles...... That Micra That Crazy octopus RX7 That Camo Porsche/Trucker girl camo jetta So Many cool Datsuns/Toyotas/Volvos even skodas ;D An appreciation of everyday classics and muscle cars, the variety here is amazing and unequalled anywhere on the web. We all have a collective responsibility to and for the quality of this forum, sometimes we all need reminding of that What Hotwire, R-Mad, posters like DarrenW etc have created for all of us here is amazing, we should try and keep the same level of Quality in all our posts Next time you think of asking "Tell me about" try doing some research outside of R-R and bringing it back in for discussion........ Do a search and find some cool cars, come back with them and show everyone that then starts another Famous R-R Picture thread that we all love and adds to the quality and depth of this place This is my opinion as an R-R member who needs reminding of what we had and what we are in danger of loosing if we don't keep focused on the subject

Wanna know whats happened??
Its February ,..
And I'm rather too busy to go and find stuff to keep the board pepped up (which is what I used to spend a lot of my time doing)...
I was rather hoping that people would be able to find and post their own inspiration. The time I have on the board is instead spent dealing with peoples complaints about stuff... the lack of inspirational stuff being the ultimate irony.
Not enough inspiration, go and find some,.. then post it...
Might I suggest not doing it all in one post, but spreading it ... also web links to the source also help.

sex weeeeee! I agree a bit, however I don't think that there is anything wrong with "tell me about" threads. From my experience of retro-rides there is a lot of people who know what they are talking about, and I for one value there knowledge and input when I request it. IMO OFFFFFFF..............

Gone away and thought about what I wrote (2 minute ago!) I feel duty bound to go out with my digital camera and collect pics for a "spotted" thread.......

guilty of posting a TELL ME ABOUT.... thread, the reason though is that sometimes you have a particular car in mind and want to know about them, from a point of reference of someone that has a RETRO RIDES ethos. This is especially helpful to someone like myslef that is hunting a new car and needs to have the modern ease of use etc but with a little bit of retro for good measure . I tend to agree that there are too many tell me about but I've watched this site grow and its good to be able to find out pretty much all you could about a car, from modding to maintainance in one hit from people that have been down the same path before.

i don't see anything wrong with Tell me about threads. i can see what u mean about people being able to go away and research stuff on their own, but there is also a wealth of knowledge within the RR comunity, why not tap into it?

Your missing the point You are interested in a car from a retro perspective fine.... Go away and find some cool pics of it, do a bit of research then come and put that on the "Table" here for discussion, you will still get the Retro Perspective but you are bringing something positive to the board at the same time in the way that you do it ;D one way brings something in and enriches the content, while still giving you the answers that you want The other "Tell me about" way gives you the information you want without really enhancing content on here for everyone else........ Its kind of a Freindly trade off really...... I want some information from the collective community that is retro rides...... so by way of thanks for the information and ubercool inspiration I am about to recieve, I bring you this in return ;D ;D I may be completely wrong but how will we know unless we try it.... we have nothing to lose and everything to gain ;D

i know what Dom means. Its like karma, do good things and good things will come to you! ;D
and it would be good if we all remember this
but i don't see a problem with the 'tell me about' threads. sometimes searching the net brings no joy, and 20/30 people searching is easier than 1!
my concern would be getting too 'try and do things this way' cos we may seem very cliquey - and lets not forget this is an open forum where as long as its on topic anything should go really

It used to be that you'd find some pictures of some cool Volvo 240s and stick them up and say "I'm thinking about doing this" or "thinking about getting one" ,.. "What do you lot think"?? And you'd get some more ideas of what you could do with one, along with a bunch of info about them...

yeah i know, and as i said i agree with Dom.
but if i wanted something now and couldnt find it within 5 minutes on google i would ask on here. i don't have the time to d*ck about on google all day in the hope i might find something when there is all manner of knowledge and experience on here.
i see it from both sides.
what might be an idea would be if the info from the "tell me about" threads can be saved in an archive somehow so that the same "tell me abouts" didnt keep popping up

I did a couple of tell me abouts so I could get some more info on a couple of vehicles I was looking at buying. I ended up with this which had nothing in common except the cable brakes I'll get some more pictures now it's not been washed and it's coverd in bird poo. It's the new rat look. Now it's getting light again I'm getting back out to the garage more. Hopefully it'll pick back up again and the bench racers among us should get some projects in

Although we all need help now and again (most of us just "NEED HELP"....) it's nice if everyone can do a bit of groundwork and add to the content in the process. As they say, every day's a school day, for all of us! Not retro I know but was searching for cool Civics earlier... check those front wheels / tyres!

I really agree with Dom, I've never been a great thread starter but have always tried to inspire or question with whatever I post.
Plus this isn't really about show me threads, Dom's point being wider ranging the way I see it. And that is most people have come here from other forums, often much larger forums, so they'd bring material with them and kind of pop in to show stuff... Now RR is so popular, people's gravitational pull is much closer, this often being their main forum choice.
So experience outside of the clan is less, I'm guilty of this by only looking at RR and sometimes Turbobricks, but my day to day life gives rise to a lot of motoring based activities, so I bring content in that way.
Best way I can describe it is looking at RR on a good day for me is like peeking through a keyhole at a whole new world. On a bad day all I can see is a cupboard. ;D
Right, best get off and think of/find some good thread material...

The trouble with search engines is that you can often find yourself perusing the forum or forums of whatever one-make owners' club exists for your intended purchase.... As a case in point, go have a look at some of the Land Rover forums, anyone would think that they were the only company that ever made four-wheel-drives, most of the forums are full of rivet-counters, brown trousers and sycophants who think that the entire universe revolves around Solihull. The great thing about RR is that it's completely non-denominational, there's just such a broad church of knowledge and information from its members, most of whom are happy to divulge it to anyone who wants it. I've learned more about obscure J-tin and European cars in my short time here than I ever did before, and it's certainly opened my eyes to a world that I'd often wished existed but never knew actually did. I've posted quite a lot in that short time as well (probably too much, lest I be accused of being a post whore......couldn't care less, I love this place), from my regular nightly trawls through the 'bay and sharing anything that catches my eye, to photographs of oddball/modified/old/strange things I've seen on my daily travels. Had it not been for this place I certainly wouldn't be riding round indutrial estates on rainy afternoons scanning the car parks for interesting 'spots' or weaving all over the nearside lane of the M5 trying to steer 7.5 tonnes of Mercedes whilst taking shots of Mk1 Golfs ;D What am I trying to say? RR is maybe not quite what some thought it might be, but I'm fcuking loving what it is. Does that make sense?

maybe theres some confusion as i would see it personally a "tell me about" thead i would use to ask other retroriders about there experiences of the said car or engine etc.... and a "show me" thread i would used to ask for pictures of styles different wheels/colours etc relating to the thead topic.. for which it may be seen as rude to not post a pic or two ones self as a initial gesture? one is rather a opinion/insperation thread and should be in a general discussion type board... and if hot wire and others deem it worthy in the future to have a dedicated technical discission board one day then the "tell me about" thead would be there instead?! i dunno thats just my take on things... this is still IMO the best car forum out there for non-cliqueiness and insperational openmindedness and i think this maybe in part to it not being too policed.... i hope it stays that way with welcomed opposing veiws expressed with not too much seriousness peace my car loving people ..!! ;D si
