Since selling my T3 I have been looking at getting a modern Toyota Corolla T-Sport. Looking at them and researching them has started something of an interest in the rivals to Hondas Vtec engine and the cars that they power. Here is a selection of early 90's Japanese cars that were built as rivals to the Honda Civic Type R. Nissan Pulsar VZR N1 Powered by Nissan's 1.6L NEO VVL engine it develops 175BHP and can get to 60 in around 7 seconds. This is a favorite of mine and if I was in England I would probably be searching for one, although I imagine that isn't the easiest of tasks. Toyota Sprinter Trueno BZ-R These used a 20v "Black top" version of Toyotas Legendary 4A-GE engine which produced 165BHP. They were also equipped with and LSD, 6 speed gearbox and Toyota's Super Strut suspension. Again I don't think they are readily available in Europe like Type Rs seem to be but my word I think they are so much cooler. Mitsubishi Colt Cyborg-R I don't really know much about the Cyborg-R other than I think it has around 150BHP and it definately has the coolest name of them all! Does anybody have any more suggestions or pictures? Are there any owners of these cars on here? I think I remember a guy having a Pulsar. Thankyou for reading. Rob

The 1.6 Neo engine came in a guise that was the most powerful NA production engine per liter of all time, 197bhp rings bells. Must be a bit mental Makes the B16a look a bit limp wristed!

The Cyborgs are 175bhp on Japanese fuel. The Nissan Neo is in a different league though.

SR16/20VE and SR20VET (albeit originally found in X-Trails) and just a little harder to acquire lol are all superb, little-known, underrated engines.
Much like the SR20DE(T) before them. One day people will realise how great they really are.

Just remembered, there was a local lad who fitted an SR20VE into an N15 Almera GTi, It went like a raped ape, and sounded heavenly. It required the SR16 ECU to run.
Years ago I bought a JDM P11 Primera (already in country) for it's power folding mirrors and black dashboard, with just a slim hope that beneath the bonnet lurked a Neo VVL...
Sadly, there wasn't one. What I did find, coupled to it's slush box was an SR18DE though.
Anyone had one of those? Nothing special I know, but not exactly in abundance.

I'm lucky enough to have been in Sam's (TheSam's) N1 Pulsar and it's very, very, *VERY* addictive to hear the twin stage variable timing. The engine/induction/exhaust note sound and act just like V-tec when the first stage cuts in at just below 6,000rpm....but when you get to 7,000 the 2nd stage comes on cam and it's just like someones hit the hyperdrive button! Serious sensory overload, but you just want more of it.
I have some videos that I took on one of our jaunts, I've been promising to get them to Sam for well over a year and I really should. When I do, I'll post them up here as well for you all to enjoy....

The Cyborgs are 175bhp on Japanese fuel. The Nissan Neo is in a different league though. Thee was a Ralliart one with a different chip that was 195 and came with a close ratio bax and LSD We have quite a few racing here, usually the only thing that challenges the EF Honda with the B16a in the 1600 class, though a lot of Honda's are stroked to go U2L

Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.

I love driving it and it is plenty quick enough for me and is also the perfect daily. I have fitted Eibach springs which make it loads better in the corners and also reduce the comical ride height that they have as standard.

It was a regular Colt, only with an engine swap of some kind.

Another vote for Nissans SR20, a mate had a one in a Micra until he sold it for parts, hes now currently buying up parts to build another one
Had a ride in it and never wanted a SR swapped micra soo bad
