Pondering this as an idea for the MR2, is it a good idea? rear silencer, linked up to a custom bend of pipe?
It'll be lighter, cheaper (?), and simlpler, and look pretty cool/different, an hopefully release a couple more ponies.
What do technical bods make of this russel type mad cap idea?
Cheers

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I want to do something like this: to my fasty using some bike 'zausts I reckon it makes sense if you know a firendly fabricator and can get hold of them at a reasonable price - they aren't cheap...

On the bay bike zausts don't go for much, maybe just a wait until you can get a pair

Motorbike exhausts on carsBenzBoy

I bought a pair of chrome bike exhausts some time back with the intention of fitting them to my car. The bore looked about right so I snapped them up for fifteen quid the pair at an autojumble. On closer inspection, inside the cans, the bore had a reducer and looked pretty restrictive so I ditched the idea, slung 'em on the bay and made a small profit. I'm sure all bike silencers aren't like that, but it's worth bearing in mind when shopping around for some

Even some scooters have this. They can be removed pretty easily though

id guess that the 'reducers' are the internals of a stock bike can - as stock cans are, at best, wafty!
to restrict a bike washers are usually used to restrict the air intake not the exhaust. Ive never heard of the exhaust being restricted anyway
bike cans rule tho - ive got a titanium blue flame can to go on the 411/skud

Would a bike silencer/exhust be too noisy?

Friend of mine did it on his Spit, it sounded like a big bore back box, not too loud or anything.

Ive never heard of the exhaust being restricted anyway Sorry Keefy but lots of bikes (that are restricted) are restriced in the exhaust as well as the inlet sides...... The only time I have ever seen "un restricted" bikes restricted on the inlet only was in the case of some of the superbikes when Japan agreed to a bhp max and then they resticted the height the throttles could open

That would be ace SS/Andy! propper upgrade one looks like this: It doesnt need all those bends and all that metal does it?! bend, into can, pointing out the corner, job done. or something more custom is something is another option...

do you want it to come (oh errr) across the rear of the mr2 ie along the valance ?? I would take it from the manifold then cut the box off use a bent S strieght across the back using bobins off a mini andy

Hmm, I need a close propper inspection, and some 'fag packet' designs I think! ;D depends how much space there is. Tube down from manifold, with a bit of an S then arranged so the silencer is diagonal and points out the corner. summat like that, only an idea at the moment, should fit and work though I reckon! scale could be way off! ;D

Couple of things... if you buy a stock (ie suzuki hayabusa) silencer it won't be much louder than an oe car silencer, as bikes need to be silenced from standard too. Sorry to disappoint. Bike restrictions- if a bike is restricted to 33bhp for licensing reasons, then the restrictors will be placed in the inlet manifold (washers), or in the top of the carbs (mostly on two strokes) to prevent the throttle slides for opening fully. Some production bikes (ZXR750) had carb tops that were restricted from the factory, these could be remedied to provide more power by using carb tops from another bike (ZZR1100 if my memory serves). Grey import bikes from japan can have a speed restriction on, that is usually electric to come on at 112mph (again, from memory). It is common to find washers restricting power in the exhaust on 2 stroke mopeds and 125s. Reanimation, using a straight through bike silencer will give you no different a sound than using a straight through car silencer of the same bore,it'll just look nicer (and if you buy a carbon fibre, or titanium one), be lighter. Hope that clears a few things up...oh and do it cos it'll be sweet

Nice one, cheers for advice. saving weight, making sure gasses get out easy hope fully making a litle bit of extra power would be great, so would the look of it. if it sounds good too i'll be very happy. only other alternative is to get a custom 1 piece made up in a similar design.
