now i know this may be sacrilege to some of you but i am starting work to paint my car matt black with hammerite (formerly Finnegans Repaint). Gonna use a roller for an even finish....tho any reccomendations on paint to thinners ratios? ive read 50/50 and 2/3 to 1/3 etc etc. anyone have any experience of this?
and please don't scream at me for this, the car is not meant to be a gleaming show winner and i don't have 2 grand for a pro job.

i thought for something like hammerite you would only want 10% thinners - if any. roller painted cars ROCK!

Its supposed to work well. A quality brush is recommended as its supposed to flow out and self level so you don't get brush marks. Never used it myself so I wouldn't know, all I know is that Rolls Royces used to be brush painted...
I have seen people who have used Hammerite - the real stuff. I remember a Minivan locally in Hammerite gold hammered finish. Looked awful.

As has been said hammerite isn't really gloopy to be thinned down.
p.s. it may be cheaper to pay a trained professional for a bare metal respray then afford enough hammerite for a whole car.

The Repaint product is like £6 or so for a litre IIRC. It goes on pretty well and covers well from what I recall fo the "Procuct test" in a 1994 or so Popular Classics or where ever it was. You may need like 2 coats, thinned 10%, you may cover the car with 4 litres? £25 worth. Plus masking, thnners, etc. You're definitly under the £50 mark at that fo sho.

It was made by Jenolite last time I saw it. Halfords still had it on their shelves before they remodelled their local store. Jenolites website is awesum in its crappness www.jenolite.com/but these guys have it in stocK: www.yourcarparts.co.uk/trolleyed/178/254/index.htmOuch, its dearer than I thought. £15 for half a litre. Check coverage it may only take 2 litres to do an average car thinking about it. I just Googled "Jenolite Repaint" and that was the first link.

lol that website might as well not exist!
just spoke to the guy at yourcarparts.co.uk, he seemed to think 2/3 cans would be enough.
it is quite pricey and from what he said its essentially the same as the new hammerite satin.
wasnt the former finnegans either, some competitor.

johnnysomersett in da house: I know this may be sacrilege to some of you but I am starting work to paint my car matt black with hammeriteI really don't think so, doing large surfaces with Hammerite is best done with a foam type roller but brushing it on works just fine if you get decent brushes and have patience it can look real nice and stand up to wear and teare for years on... I don't know if it shows but the frame, motor and rims on my YZ was done with Hammerite gloss black and a brush, IMHO it turned out quite nice.... DP says: Hammerite is really great stuff.......

That Jenolite stuff was definitely the subject of a feature in Car Mechanics in 1994 or 95, where they brush painted a mk1 Metro. Looked like a good result! (Wish I could forget some useless facts like this and remember to do important stuff.....)
Shouldn't need to thin Hammerite down for brushing / rolling on, but you can thin it to spray with the stuff. I love Hammerite, hides a multitude of sins and usually leaves a reasonable finish!

Firstly, I reckon there's not a lot of mods that would make RR members get all steamed up. ;D Roller / brush painted cars are cool!
Someone advised me to get one of those Gloss rollers from a hardware shop as you get a better finish. I didn't use brush-on paint in the end, and went for a load of Satin black aerosol cans instead to paint my Merc. Sore finger after that lot ;D

Can someone post a pic of a car painted with a roller so I can see the effect?

*looks at beige capri*
This painting with a brush/roller jobbie sounds far simpler than with spray cans.

Finnegans was bought by Hammerite or were the same company. The Hammerite beige primer used to be sold as "Finegans Number 1". Jenolite is a different company. The Repaint productr was always Jenolite as I know? Certainly the ones I've seen reviewed were.

Yeah, Finnegans used to produce Hammerite, and Smoothrite amongst other products. But they appear to have dropped the Finnegans anme now. Who was it that made Waxoyl? Was that Finnegans too?
I wonder if the product was bought by a bigger company, rather than the original maker, so they couldn't use Finnegans, but they could use Hammerite as a new subsiduary name. Hence, hammerite hammered and hammerite smooth.

I suspect Richard Madeley forced his crumply-faced wife to sack off her sideline protective coatings business in order to concentrate on their channel 4 early evening chat + light entertainment show, hence the disappearance of the 'Finnegans' bit.

Doesnt she still use it on her face though for that "munted" look?
