Thing is Foose is a regualr nice guy. This probably comes across as bland on TV. He's not a TV personality he's a car builder. What I detest is people who are "personalities" or worse still they are trying to be "personalities". W@nkers. First against the wall come the revolution.
I'm not into all the cak with stunts and reveals. I want to see a car being done up. The how, the why, the "theme", how it works, what the thought process and development is. You get some of that on Overhauling. Jerkass presenters I can do without.

I went to the Sema show in Las Vegas to promote my company last year then popped over to Orange County (as you do), went to Boyds place (which was super clean and a 'proper' business, nothing like it is potrayed on th TV) as well as meeting Russell Mitchell, Charlie who is lovely bloke and chip. There is a small cafe near chips 'shop. It was really strange feeling, i was sitting there with my 2 year old daughter, having a diet coke and just hangin with all of there famous (in car terms ) people who all had to go back to work at 1.00 PM. Just like real people. All the 'shops chip uses are all near by. Lanzini's is just a 50 feet down the road. Its was one of the best days i had out there, got some good pic's inside chips 'shop as well as ther other places too. I'll post some up soon.

I mean you've got to give credit where credit's due, Chip Foose designs some stunning cars and the workmanship looks to be first class. One complaint though, i do wish thay wouldn't stick 20 od inch rims on everything, some of the old cars have some sexy retro rims fitted and i would love to see them use these a lot more. Also I too get a little bored of the pranks but i guess they have to have that side to the show to appeal to a wider audience, of course this is the reason why we don't see enough technical stuff either but i'd rather it was like it is than not on the box at all.
I had another car program on series link called Chop Cut Rebuild, thats a bit better in that they are a bit more technical and don't have wanky pranks inter-twined through the building of the cars. I've picked up a few tips from watching CCR but the series i have on the sky box is from 05. Does anyone know if they made another one in 06?

can i just clear this up
with the exception of 'the boydster', and few others no doubt, chip foose is not a car designer
in essence, he gives them a nice paint job and sticks some wheels on them
someone else has already designed and engineered them years before he gets his hands on them

aye ok, sorry about the "wrong" choice of word there.
I just think he makes a nice job of the cars he customises, admitedly the amount of re-engineering varies as mostly they are just paint job and wheels but i'm sure you knew what i meant.
did i hit a nerve there or what?

no not at all, its just i was having a conversation with some idiot the other day that was claiming foose was a 'genius' i disagreed cos i worked and went to college with real car designers and it just gets my back up
i like the cars he does though don't get me wrong, but i don't think car designers ever really get credited for the work they do

I guess you could use design in a loose sense when describing the work these guys do but i see what you mean.
These guys do some incredible work though thats all i meant and it is engineering if only to be called re-engineering.
They borrow from existing designs, as do other car designers, just on a different level.

Heres his bio off his site.
Chip's career profile is staggering; in 1986 he was Staff Designer/ Fabricator for the Asha Corporation, eventually becoming director of design in 1989. Chip was responsible for conceptualizing new proprietary ideas and fabrication of prototypes for the O.E.M.'s
Other work has included: Stehrenberger Design as an automotive designer, creating colored illustrations and conceptual models, Baker Sportronics, as chief designer and fabricator of both models and prototypes of electric vehicles to be used in the NFL and NBL, and of course, going to work with his father and Project Design, designing and building street rods, customs, studio vehicles and show cars for films such as Blade Runner, Robo Cop, and Gone in 60 Seconds, which featured "Elinor".
November 1990 brought about the beginning of a relationship with Boyd Coddington and Hot Rods by Boyd, becoming a full time position in 1993, which lead to Managing Director where Chip eventually became the President of Hot Rods by Boyd. Chip, who is widely acclaimed for his "Boyd Look" design and creative skills, was responsible for many internationally known vehicles such as: Roadster, Sportstar, Boydster I and II, and Boyd Air to name a few.
Does this help?

ive done some digging around and i cant find any actual evidence of him designing a car that hasnt already been designed and produced
at asha he wasnt in a position to actually design in any capacity as he hadnt completed his degree when he was employed there, and even then he was only there for 4 years, and all his other cars 'elinor' included were sexed up versions of something else
i consider what he does as design in respect to the colour combination of the bodywork and interior, but i don't consider him an actual automotive designer
i do like the stuff he does though, but putting him along side the designer of the new thunderbird is, in a way, not giving actual automotive designers their dues
he did sex up a version of the new thunderbird that he called the speedbird, but he did not design it

just had a quick scoot about, and found out J Mays, and his team, designed and created the new thunderbird
heres a car designers summary:
Since joining Ford Motor Company, Mays has completed the development of several new production models including the Ford GT40, the 2002 Ford Thunderbird, and the all-new 2002 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer. He has also led the development of several concept vehicles including the Ford Forty-Nine, Jaguar F-Type, and Volvo Safety Car Concept. Prior to joining Ford, Mays served as Vice President of Design Development at SHR Perceptual Management of Scottsdale, Ariz. from 1995 to 1997. Following graduation in 1980 from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. Mays began his career as an exterior designer with Audi AG in Ingolstadt, Germany, where he was recognized for the design of the Audi 80. In 1983, Mays moved to BMW AG in Munich, Germany to work on exterior design proposals for the BMW 5 and 8 series. Mays returned to Audi in 1984 as a senior designer. He was manager of exterior design and was responsible for developing aerodynamic research vehicles for Audi Rally/Trans Am programs. He also worked to develop full-scale model proposals for the Audi 100, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo, and Audi Cabrio. In addition, Mays designed the Audi AVUS concept car. After spending the first part of his career in Germany, Mays came back to the U.S. in 1989 to work as the chief designer in Volkswagen of America's Design Center in Simi Valley, Calif. He worked to establish a design center infrastructure including facilities and equipment needed for development of full-scale exterior and interior models. He was also responsible for the design and branding of the Volkswagen Concept 1, which later became the new Beetle. In 1993, Mays returned to Audi AG in Germany as design director responsible for worldwide Audi design strategy, development, and execution, before changing the direction of his career by joining SHR. Mays has received numerous professional awards and recognition for his work. He received the Harvard Design School annual Excellence in Design Award in February 2002. In September 2002, Mays received the Don Kubly Professional Attainment Award from the Art Center College of Design. Mays was born Oct. 15, 1954 in Pauls Valley, Okla.
