like any expolded subject, it gets a little comlicated but good info and tips! Home speaker wire will be ok yeah, like thick stuff from hifi shops? So basically a head unit to two amps one driving a sub up back somewhere (anywhere that it will fit?) and one driving two quality round speakers. 1. what about a system without amps just head unit power? feed rear connectors to a sub or big speakers(s)? 2. what about a system with one amp just driving a sub and front speakers coming off head unit? Not sur how i'll get on using my mondeo unit and dash hidden small amp, guess i'd have to look how a mondy is configured... hmmm

Fantastic, cheers. anyone got any preference on speaker brands. I got messing on those (Bo) speaker selectas in Halfords which are always fun unless someone else is also trying to 'mix' etc! lol I think it was Alpine speakers that sounded nicest, i think! it was only a muck about, will go back for a play soon!

I love music, and I love listening to it up loud... so ICE is something I have a bit of an interest in, currently running Clarion/DLS/Rockford Fosgate in the Alfa, and the KP just received a basic, inexpensive Pioneer/Audison/Sony setup for it's upcoming big roadtrip.

of course it matters, especially if your car isnt entertaining enough. which mine clearly isnt. not sure what the best sounding speakers are, but i run a mix. current install 2 x blaupunkt tweeter with inbuilt crossovers 2 x sony custom fit in the dash 2 x kenwood 6 x 9s in the back doors 1 x legacy 800w amp 2 x vibe 12" subs this is due for a change so watch this space.the amp can only be wired up to give 2 x 400, and thats a bit shat, seeing as the subs can handle 1800w rms each.il be getting a bigger amp to power the subs, and using the current amp to power whatever replaces the 6 x 9s, although il have to turn the gain down so i don't burst them. have to agree with SS on the 6 x 9s, going to bin mine in favour of something in the round variety. for all of the speakers, except the subs, i use 6 core copper cable, bought from a hardware shop on a roll.much cheaper than buying the "proper" speaker cables. depending on how big of an amp and sub you go for, its worth bearing in mind that you need some monster cable for the live to the amp, and a fcucking huge fuse. the power cable to my amp is about a centimetre in diameter, with a 60 amp fuse in line with it.

My GT has a radio/cassette fitted, but the dashboards on these things preclude fitting DIN-sized units, so old tat it is.....mind you, it's not actually connected up yet; job for this year I suppose. On the way back from the Auction at Norwich, we called in to the Castle Mall to swap a CD for my daughter. My boy asked why my rad/cass wasn't working, so as I drove round the carpark, I wound the window down and gave it some......question answered! ;D Aren't underground carparks wonderful!

i got all my cable (4AWG) and a 60amp inline fuse (x lots) from maplins. home speaker wire i found to be unanimously a waste of time. i got all my advice from installers of 160+DB systems...
reani, option 1 is a BAD idea as dave said, a HU giving 45watts isnt going to work powering a 400watts sub now! 2 is a good idea, i've used that one a few times to great effect. you have little control over the quality of the component speakers though.
also bear in mind 2 things. the further away from the HU the amp is, the more quality is lost on the RCA/phono leads. the further it is away from the sub, the more quality is lost along the wires. Find a balance. also don't cross phono cables unless you like the fuzz. they have a magnetic field around them.
tony, duuuuuuuuuuuude! 1800 rms each? you need to get something mahoosive goin on! also 'proper' speaker cable is oxygen free, it has a far, far higher quality, still, don't buy it from a 'sounds' shop but maplins do it.
as for quality, most are good. jsut go by the price for the quality for the main part. personally i wouldn't recommend Kenwood, Goodmans, Alba or any cheap makes for anything at all, Panasonic are good on a budget, as are Mutant, Sony and Fusion. JBL are perhaps the best all rounder and after that, Pioneer, Audiobahn, Rockford Fosgate, Fusion Jonah Lomu... the lsit is as long as my arm...

Add to your list:
DLS, Rainbow, and Focal. Brilliant speakers, generally more SQ focused and a little more expensive, but worth every dollar, and also use restrained and simple design so they often fit nicely into an older cars cabin, lookswise!
For some mega, mega doof, try Digital Designs subs, or Resonant Engineering (RE) XXX series....

I admit it's nice to listen to choonZ when out and about but neither of the crapis have anything more than a radio, as I keep thinking what awesomness I can get for them with the £200 i'd need for an ICE system worth bothering with.

Some fantastic advice! cheers. TBH my option 1 was because thats the most realistic. I'm not about to wedge loads of money on new equipment and my current projects I want to keep lightish if poss. Also I have always (wrongly) associated subs (as in sub woofers) llike bass cannons as boy racher chav territory, sorry no offence intended, just reprogramming the nerves . A decent car system is something thats permanently been on one of my back burners for evAr! hell I even lived with the Micras offering of Virgin 1215 and Classic gold for too long. my first car radio getting nicked after a couple month zapped my ICE mojo! option 1 would have to be 4 decent medium speakers. and I f I do it propperly, in one car. I now have a vague idea whats needed. Thanks By the sound of this this thread you wouldnt think I have as many audio qualifications as I do! shocking. watch this space...for a while ;D

Not the stuff that stops ya tyres working. good old wirlesses! well new wirelesses. i'm not about to get one soon but i'm intreagued for when I do have the dosh to splash. Now an half decent CD radios (so 90's I know) can be got at for less than £100, set of speakers easily less than £100, and for the hard of hearing a an amp is pretty cheap too. what more do you need! Whats the cheapest half decent stereo with a a phones jack input, or USB for MP3? And apart from an ear shattering heart pumping system or an all in one Sat nav thingy, why spend a fortune?! Specially when the car becomes a target for crims and looters. thoughts and ideas on the subject? I'd love a nice crisp system for the car without going mad for weight, after all its teh best place to practice ya singing! OK, this is what I'd do if I were starting from scratch..... Parrott Rhythm & Blues head unit - 'cos it has a built-in hands-free kit for your phone. JBL components up front, sub in the back. Not too expensive, not too technical, and does everything you're ever likely to need.

tony, duuuuuuuuuuuude! 1800 rms each? you need to get something mahoosive goin on! indeed, but its all down to money, like the lack of it. i got a few of my bits from a guy i work with who won a couple of hundred grand on the lotto. he loaded his car out with gear, drove it around for a couple of months, decided to sell it, so stripped it all out again. he got loads of jip of his missus for clutering the house up with it, so offered it to me for a fraction of what it cost him. i didnt want all of it, fool me, but i had some of the choice items. looking back, i should have bought it all. new, bigger amp is a work in progress, watch this space.

I do like to have a nice bit of sound quality when I'm listing to Radio 2 (No, really, I do. ) You and me both....Kerrang FM when I'm in the midlands, R2 the rest of the time....though if I had DAB in the car/truck it would be BBC6 Music....awesome. ;D

My MW/LW radio has recently give up the ghost - died in the middle of a Genesis track on classic gold - make your own assumptions. I like my music, so I will replace it with a cassette/FM radio but not much else. My 100A has a non functioning radio/speaker too but I like the sound of the eager engine.

small amp - ipod wired directly to it, £10 for the amp, a few quid for cables and a few hours fitting. out of sight, as many tunes as your ipod can carry, nothing to steal This was my plan as well, so that I could have whatever mp3 player, and also (important to me) DAB radio. I just have 1 question to anyone that has actually got round to it - how do you deal with the pre-amp thingy <apologies for lack of technical knowledge> - the blue wire that also connects to the back of the head unit normally?

Of course the other more fun alternative to all this wiring is a pair of webers with big velocity stacks and a straight through exhaust.... music to my ears

I just have 1 question to anyone that has actually got round to it - how do you deal with the pre-amp thingy <apologies for lack of technical knowledge> - the blue wire that also connects to the back of the head unit normally? the remote wire... it runs from the back of the HU to each amp (split it if need be). on the amp there are 3 connections in a row, the +, the - and in between, the remote. its a very low feed running from the earth of the HU just to say 'we're on now chaps' plus if you put a switch along it, you can choose which speakers to put on. which means you can run multiple systems in one car
